Here is what happen in the match between Shapovalov vs Nadal

lordlosh

Semi-Pro
Shapovalov get in the zone, and was barely making any UE, and Nadal obviously get tired and cold, and Shapovalov was crushing him with his power.
So the "mighty" Nadal decide to take a med. timeout, cause this is his way to handle situation like this, when his game is regressing, and his opponent is in the zone, and he has done that many, many times in the past.
Obviously he knows very well that when the player is in the zone, that doesn't last forever, and the best way to get him out there was to disrupt his momentum/rhythm and he was constantly serving on 40-50+, and took extra 10-15 sec. between first and second serve, where the rules is that you should serve straight away after a missed first serve.
The umpire is corrupt, as Denis pointed out, cause they always treat Nadal that way, and start the clock 10-15, and even 20 sec late after the point is over, so Nadal to be calm and the match to be played by his pace.

Obviously Nadal tactic succeeded and Denis was out of his comfort zone, and his game totally get ruined in the 5 and he was making tons of UE. He was obviously also mentally pissed with all the sh*** Nadal has done and get away with it.
He said it perfectly you had to play against him, the umpire and it's mentally tiring.
Nadal also was disrupting Shapo serve by making him wait to serve, and Nadal was constantly not ready, also slowing every single moment in between game and so, where other players have a strict time they need to follow.
Nadal is used to that, cause he play all of his matches like that, but his opponents are not, cause all of their other matches are in the strict rules time.

This ain't some friendly match, this is a PRO sport, and even slight different will make huge impact in the result. In Tennis you are rotating your whole body, as well as using your body weight in pretty much every single shot. If you are supposedly injured, your shots will be halved in speed. And Nadal is also using heavy topspin, which obviously waste more energy and require extra efforts.
Yet he was hitting his FH and BH, and serve in the 5th full Power.

It's one thing to have 3-4 med. timeouts in your whole career, and another to have like 50, just like Nadal have, and to constantly doing it when you are gaming is ******, and your opponent is in the zone.
When exactly Nadal has been doing this, when his game is on the rise and he is leading the game(not talking the result, but the game) ??? Yeah, exactly never!!! What is the % of that ? Yeah exactly 0 !!!

Maybe you should get your glasses, if you are so deluded and can't see the clear cheating pattern !!!

So the only player in the history with probably 50+ medical timeouts. And somehow magically wins most of this matches ....

Nadal is well-known for having stomach aches when he's in hot and humid weather for a long time.
I remember in a South American swing the doctor said Nadal has a condition which flares in hot and humid weather.
Hot weather is ok, but when its humid too, its a problem.
That's why Nadal was able to win the 5th Set, his stomach settled and he became his normal self again.

My stomach also gets tied up in knots when I’m facing down elimination and missing out on achieving my 21st grand slam win.
Seriously, I’m not sure if OPs or your post was worse.

Shapo hasn't a good record with Umpires LOL

Tbh Shapo barely did anything to win those two sets and op is making it sound as if Rafa's break halt the momentum and before the mto Shapo was playing light out tennis lol
Really? Shapo have like 5 UE in the whole 4th set. He managed to do more UE in the first 2 games in the 5th.
Shapo was playing really well in the 4th and barely make mistakes, and most importantly, he was in the zone, has the momentum and his rhythm was solid. His serve was also consistent.
Everything goes off, after Nadal gamesmanship.

Nadal was barely trying and Still had multiple bps on Shapo's serve that's how good Shapo was playing

Shapo is a choker, thats what happened. He had BPs on Rafas serve twice in a row at the start of the 5th set. Same thing as vs Djoko at W21.

Shapo was actually one i could cheer for after Roger, but i cant support another choker. Next player i support must have the head of someone like Rafa or Djoker, not one who always plays his worst when it matter the most:)

Yet he still won the set. Just because he faced BPs which he safed, doesn't mean he was playing bad. He was having moments off, but the momentum of the match was with him, and he had great rhythm and was in the zone with UE, as stats clearly shows, so yeah you are wrong again.

He used to take them a lot, he barely takes them anymore. Is it not possible he could have actually had a problem? I don't recall him taking one in any of his losses here in 2019, 2020, or 2021? Unless I'm forgetting something? He took one in 2018, and how much difference did that make when faced with an opponent who didn't wet the bed in the wake of it?

At the end of the day, you just have to do whatever it takes to win. Can you imagine Djokovic making all these excuses? Just win, it's the best way to shut people up rather than whinging
Agree. Meddy is the only NextGen who will go into this knowing and believing he can take out a Big3 in a slam final. I will have Meddy as a fav vs Rafa in a final, but not a big fav.

Stats show Shapo had more winners than UFE in sets 3 and 4. Set 4 14 winners and 5 UFE.
In sets 1, 2, and 5 he had more UFEs than winners.
Rafa looked done for in the fourth.
He had a rest, court was in full shade, he got the break and from there he used the Sampras playbook and barely tried in his receive games, just rested and held his serve. Final game Shapo gave him too many errors.

Instead of complaining Shapo should of oughta made Rafa run and run.

statistics are not on Shapolov’s side regarding how poorly he executed during the match. His UE count went down when Nadal was in distress. Huge difference in how Nadal handled situation vs Shap. Shapolova wasted his time having a tantrum on court. Statistics showed 31 seconds for Nadal, 29 for Shapo. Both over.

A few times during the match Shaps had unhelpful Murrayesque outbursts. Everybody knows what Nadal does on court, Shaps should have been concentrating more on his game and how to win the match.

I won't judge an MTO because I always assume a person is injured unless proven guilty.

But it is indeed regrettable that Nadal continues to use gamesmanship to force the server to play to his pace, and this has nothing to do with whether he is a better player than Shap or not.

Yeah this, slowing down the pace on his own serve is one thing but making the server wait grinds my gears.

Nadal has been using these unsportsmanship like tactics for a while now. More players are noticing it and outraged.. what took them that long to voice?

Rafa very cleverly took advantage of a situation which even took Carlos Bernardes by suprise.

At the completion of the 4th Set, Rafa walked to his chair and started organising a bunch of his things. He was shifting his bottle around and searching through his bag over and over. He did this routine for approximately 2 minutes. He then basically headed for the change room with nary a comment to the umpire. When Carlos realised that Rafa was leaving the court he sort of shook his head, rolled his eyes and then got on the walkie talkie to figure out what was happening. Rafa was off the court for at least 8 minutes before he returned. So he took a break of about 10 minutes overall and left Shapo hanging. We know how the match ended. (Actually, if I had been Shapo, I would have also immediately left the court as soon as I saw Rafa heading for the exit.)

This is an area where the rules could be tidied up a bit. If a player wishes to leave the court, they must notify the Umpire of their intention within 15 seconds of the Umpire calling the score to complete the Set.

Rafa has often talked about respecting the sport and respecting opponents. But time and time again his actions contradict his words. His action today was pretty disgusting imho.

How about Shapo decides to leave for bathroom break exactly after Rafa returns to court.

He shouts to umpire " i need to poop urgently and runs away to bathroom " , and returns after 10 minutes feeling light and relaxed.

#Checkmate Rafa !

Exactly the summer weather at the island he's from...must be hell for him to live there.
Also, it flares up only when he's in trouble...easy to understand -- stress causes it.
However, sub 40% humidity is far from humid. I don't recall how he survived any matches in Miami...
