SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - Former world No.1 Leyton Hewitt will make his comeback from hip surgery at the Sydney International tennis tournament in January ahead of the Australian Open.

Hewitt said his recuperation from an operation after the Beijing Olympics was progressing well.

"My recovery is going well and I am really looking forward to the Australian summer," he said in a statement Tuesday. "It is an exciting time for me. I am already feeling refreshed, reinvigorated and excited about the challenge ahead."

Hewitt has won the Sydney title on four occasions, most recently in 2005.

"Sydney is a happy hunting ground for me," he said. "Some good hard matches in Sydney will certainly help me in my preparation for the 2009 Australian Open."

unfortunately his streak of at least one title for the past 10 seasons has finally come to an end. hopefully he 2009 is good to him.

This break will be good for him. He needed to recharge his batteries and I am looking for big things from him in 2009. People say he is finished yet Ferrer and Davydenko continue to hang around the top 5 or 6. What do these guys do better then Hewitt is potentially capable of? Nothing. Hewitt just needs to find his fire and some confidence and he will be right up there again.

despite the injuries...i really think hewitt has a good chance to come back.

he just needs the rocky balboa mentality and his fitness back. He can still be very successful.

i saw him against federer in both canada and cincy last year. federer had to play exceptional in canada to beat hewitt and in cincy...it was really close.

in fact federer's match against hewitt in canada last year was one of his best of the year. That was the match where i saw federer bomb serves at 217 out wide down break points and his fh was scorching the whole match.

He's gone, lost the edge years ago. Swapped success on court for ***** off court. That doesn't work unless you're safin or flipper.

Yeah you are definitely right. If he played the way he did vs Federer last summer more regularly he would be back in the top 5 in no time. Like I said what on earth do Ferrer or Davydenko have on him. If those guys can be ranked between #4-#6 then there is absolutely no reason Hewitt cant be, even now. I still think those guys have nothing on him if he is playing his potential, they are the same type of player and Hewitt can do everything better then them.

have they replaced him with a new hip?... i miss his cocky attitude. with the vicht salutes while betting bageld.

i need that "see how cool i still look when i get my ass whipped...."

Hmm you seem like an angry dude. He obviously doesn't get his ass whipped as often as most since he has accomplished more than just about anyone on tour today except for Federer and Nadal.

as much as i dislike hewitt, the guy deserves the respect as a former #1 (for his achievements, not his attitude). I agree here.

Breaker. you are one of the last inteligent posters in this forum so i will disclose you the truth. im angry at one particular poster of this thread. i actually found hewitt back in the days a great player...

I like Hewitt. I look forward to his return. Hope he brings the feistiness back. He's fun to watch!

It is too bad so many injuries have wrecked his career. Also he is one of the few players today unlucky not to play back when we had more of the big serve/volley players since he had the perfect game to counter that kind of player. Against other baseliners like Federer, Nadal, Djokovic who hardly ever come in and hardly ever give him a target his game isnt quite as effective.

Gugafan,

I am not a fan of Hewitt, at the same time I don't want to see this hip injury be something that takes him out. I am a fan of Kuerten and I have seen what this type of injury can have a huge impact on their game. I really hope that he is in great shape and not rushing this comeback, all is well with Mr. Hewitt and his newborn child next year.

That's very true. I hadn't thought about that, but he used to be so consistent. He hardly ever missed, now he misses quite a bit. I hope he brings a little firepower back with him, too. It will only add to the game!

I like Hewitt tennis a lot. By watching him playing live or video, you can learn and expect a lot of skill and unexpected performance from him. Thru the injuries which had affected his recently performance, he really need a season rest. All the best for him in year 2009.

I think Hewitt will have a decent year next year but I don't think he will have a Nadal like year. So I don't expect any different results then the past few years.

what a joke!! fed comes to net so much

Im expecting big things from a now healthy Hewitt--I am predicting that he will come out really hungry in sydney--a place that will be going absolute nuts when he plays---Its going to be a new era for lleyton and i expect him to get back into the top 10 in the world

His a hingis hasbeen washed up i love his strokes his game his 90degree back bend for every serve but it aint effective any longer. Now a days you have to be consistent and powerful at the same time. hewitts just consistent and fast period.

It's says on the Hopman Cup website that Hewitt will play with Dellacqua :|
Which of course is a week before sydney

Anyway's, i'm excited to see him return. Hewitt's been my favourite player since i started following the sport. Always love watching him play at the Australian Open

and yet davydenko and ferrer are inferior.look where they are. Another eg. is that a injured hip hewitt took ferrer to 5 at the french when he was 2 sets to 1 up and it took the top 4 players at each major/olympics to stop him whilst carrying an injury in 08. Trust me, a fit hewitt is making movements in 09.

Where is Hewitt? What is his ranking? Is the AO court perfect for him yet?

Hewitt is a lot of talk, and whining.

He has a real life now with real people, great wife and two? kids now?

Who cares what he does, not interesting at all.

Don't get me wrong he had a great run, but similar to Safin his time is going downhill.

You get your hopes up for these players and they don't fail to disappoint.

yes they are similar to hewitt but they also have huge differences. David ferrer has a HUGE forehand which is more3 effective than hewitts + Ferrer is a aggressive basliner hewitts a counterpuncher. Davydenko is known for he solid solid ground strokes. Hid performance this year in Miami. he has a feared back hand which is often compared with Agassi's. and also he is an aggresive baseliner and hewitt is a counterpuncher. Hewitt's forehand is better than his backhand but its not good enough to go against ferrers forehand or davydenko's backhand.
