Hey TT members - In your opinion what is best tennis match ever?

Greatest performance, probably yes.

By a long shot, probably no. Outside of the Godfather movies, Pacino was incredible in Scent of a Woman, Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico, Carlito's Way, Scarface.
Ok - maybe that was a stretch.

Man you are really readjusting me today. Lol.

Had his signature shout in both of them. Heat would have to be the more iconic. lol GREAT ASS. I just put Donnie Brasco up with his very best. Heat might be the better movie. Both excellent.
Not to brag but:

swiped tickets to this, two Fridays from now. Full screening. Full Q&A with Mann, De Niro, Pacino on stage. One of my top 10 of all time. Hopefully the broad with the great ass makes an appearance as well.

Could say the same for Wimbledon 2008. Most objective observers feel it wasn't even the best Fedal Wimbledon final in terms of quality, let alone best match ever.

But my mistake. I know that no match Fed actually won can be great.

It has nothing to do with Federer losing, it literally was the height of their rivalry and the insane drama, high quality, and flashbulbs in the dark are legendary

It’s not even the best Fedal match imo. Wimbledon 2007, AO 2009, Rome 2006, are all better.

GD II remains Al Pacino's greatest performance by a long shot.

Actually - got leave part I in there too for the full transformation.
How Al Pacino didn't win an Oscar for "Best Actor" in both films shocks me. His performances as Michael Corleone in the two films are also miles away from the typical Al Pacino characters that he usually plays.

The recency bias in off the charts. Almost every single match mentioned is within the last 25 years. Tennis did exist before then. o_O
I'd have to actually watch Gonzales-Pasarell to make a judgment on it, even if it's the objectively right answer.

Have you seen it? No sitdowns at the change of ends, Gonzales complaining that play wasn't abandoned at the end of the marathon 22-24 first set in the fading light, Gonzales the next day managed to win 3 straight sets. Total match time was 5 hours and 12 minutes, or something like that, considering there were no sitdowns at the change of ends. Gonzales saved 7 match points, twice from 0-40 down. Gonzales won 22-24, 1-6, 16-14, 6-3, 11-9. Probably the single biggest reason for the tiebreak's introduction soon afterwards.

Nothing is going to beat Marlon Brando for Godfather Oscar. I think 2 is probably the better performance, and no idea why he didn't win. Academy has a problem with ''little Al.''

Sounds like an awesome time. Have fun. (y)

It has everything to do with Federer losing. Otherwise it would've just been another Federer victory over Nadal at Wimbledon.

This match is legendary and is your favorite because that's the moment when Rafa became GOAT and Fed became an also-ran

I think Pacino was even better than Brando. Pacino was also in the film for longer. And what is the main core of the first film? It's how Michael Corleone goes from "that's my family Kay, not me" to the dominant Don who has killed off all the rival families and calmly lies to his wife in denying that he had Carlo murdered.

I do know what you mean, though. Vito is established straight away and thus grabs immediate attention, whereas Michael is going on a character journey and starts as more lowkey. Amazing to think that the studio bosses didn't want Pacino, Brando, Caan or Duvall in the first film, and almost fired director Coppola.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one.

WIMBLEDON 2018, SF:
Djokovic vs Nadal 6-4,3-6,7-6,3-6,10-8
This is the one! Like watching gladiators in the Coliseum, but it's Wimbledon stadium court, with butterflies! I forget who the commentator was, but he was beside himself with joy at how good the tennis was.

I love when Michael lights the cigarette for Enzo. He's just so calm and notices it himself. The turn to the other side has already started. Yeah, Michael is excellent. Just not Don Vito style. :p

Yes I think it was Castle! He makes some comments about the butterfly when Nadal is trying to clear it off the court and also some comments about the level of play and he's obviously just tickled by the whole scene. His enthusiasm is really charming, and relatable. What a match.

..
Some other great matches during the period are actually for me on the women’s side - Venus vs Davenport (wimbly), Henin vs Venus (USO 2007), Henin vs Capriati (2003 USO)

Earlier this week, I'd happened to start watching the Henin vs. Capriarti 2003 uso semi currently on yt. I'd missed a lot of those televised matches back then in the 00's. I'd not realized(forgotten?) Capriati was such a big hitter on the wta tour, and with a dbl-handed bh volley. Henin, just amazing and with her 1hbh play and skill, and both were good or decent at the net. I guess today's WTA could use a bit more of that old variety.

Let's vote.
Your picks for best BO5 and BO3 tennis matches of all time?

BO5:
WIMBLEDON 2018, SF:
Djokovic vs Nadal 6-4,3-6,7-6,3-6,10-8

BO3:
OLYMPICS 2012, SF:
Federer vs Del Potro 3-6,7-6,19-17
You posted 2 options only. Are those your picks or are those the only options?

Wimbledon 2001 Ivanisevic v Rafter.

The most incredible tournament, IMO, and in the eyes of many, the greatest ever tournament from start to finish, ending with the most magical fairytale storyline, with the most insane crowd, losing their mind on practically every single point. Ivanisevic dedicating the win to his late friend, in the first ever Monday final in history. For me, nothing touched the magic of that final, one of the best sporting stories ever told. The most emotionally charged match I have ever seen.

This is just insane and I always think about it when I am playing multiple deuce battle on my serve

That was a great match with lot of drama too. The NY crowd supporting the local girl was amazing to watch while Henin was out there to prove that the RG fiasco with Serena was not going to stop her. Matches that are great are amplified by the atmosphere, the flashlights, history on the line, the crowd, injury breaks and personalities of the players. Its a whole movie right there.
