Hey TT members - In your opinion what is best tennis match ever?

It has everything to do with Federer losing. Otherwise it would've just been another Federer victory over Nadal at Wimbledon.

This match is legendary and is your favorite because that's the moment when Rafa became GOAT and Fed became an also-ran

Yeah im the first one that called it the greatest match ever and produced a movie on it LOL get over yourself. Be mad at FEDERER for choking 5000 times. yes, his losses ARE epic af. It is what it is.

Lol the answer is easily one of Rome 2005, AO 2009 SF, Wawrinka Gasquet RG 2013(HIGHLY UNDERRATED MATCH) from all the matches I have ever watched.

Also 2007 WB F> 2018 WB SF > 2008 WB F

If you like that match because Federer won it. I completely understand.

It made me happy at the time as well.

However, in terms of quality, it's probably the worst five set match in the whole Federer / Nadal rivalry.

The fifth set was amazing.

The first four sets were average at best.
I agree it was not the best by several of their matches.

But it was above average for any other players.

And the 1st and 3rd sets for Fed were solid w great play from him.

And yeah - set 5 was epic.

This is just insane and I always think about it when I am playing multiple deuce battle on my serve

Yeah, unless you knew the story of Goran Ivanisevic, and had followed it unfold for a decade leading into this match, and then watch this game, as it happened live, you will never truly appreciate just how insane, and nerve wracking of a moment this was in tennis history. This moment was a decade in the making, and I remember I was losing my mind and walking around the room during this last game. After 10 years of pain, he finally did it.

Fed down 1-3 in the 5th vs Rafa and comes back. Given all the previous heartbreakers vs Nadal, that was the most significant 5th set they ever played.

not sure this refutes anything I said lol, you're just gloating

edit--iOS ruins everything

Not to brag but:

swiped tickets to this, two Fridays from now. Full screening. Full Q&A with Mann, De Niro, Pacino on stage. One of my top 10 of all time. Hopefully the broad with the great ass makes an appearance as well.
That was a pretty bleak movie but it really left an impression. The love-hate between Pacino and De Niro's characters was the highlight to me. Reminded me of Mr. White/Mr. Orange from Reservoir Dogs.

Also De Niro's character final choice. Don't want to spoil.

I think Nadal / Dimi was the best match of that tournament. The closest we’ve got to seeing peak Grigolo.
Dimitrov was amazing. Just goes to show how insane the Big 3 era was, a talent like Dimitrov plays to his maximum and can't even get past post-prime Rafa on a fast hard court (although Rafa played great too and post-prime Rafa is arguably better on hard court than prime Rafa), and even if he did he'd have to then play Federer in the final.

Federer-Safin AO 2005
Nadal-Federer W 2008
Nadal-Djokovic AO 2012

And any Wawrinka-Djokovic slam meeting from 2013-2014 was insane quality + drama.

It was a final worthy of Hollywood. A man whose dreams had been crushed so many times finally overcoming his demons and finding redemption -when no one gave him a chance. All played out in front of a crowd of ordinary, boisterous, true tennis fans who took the place of the Establishment, the famous and the wealthy -for one glorious day only. And I was lucky enough to be there. Unforgettable.

Nothing will ever top the overall combination of drama, quality, hype and historical significance of the Wimbledon 2008 final. Feel priviliged to have watched it live even on television.

The recency bias in off the charts. Almost every single match mentioned is within the last 25 years. Tennis did exist before then. o_O
Well, for me, my favorite was the 72 WCT final with Rosewall beating Laver in the 5th set tiebreak. Laver was ahead 5-4 with 2 serves to come. He serves to Ken's backhand twice, and loses both points, one return a clean winner, the other a forced error. Really though there have been so many great matches over the years it is hard to pick just one.

Well said. The whole thing is Hollywood at its finest. Really is the greatest tennis story ever told, and I have watched decades of it.

For sheer quality, among those which I watched live I would say 2018 Djokodal Wimbledon semi final.. But it lacks the historical significance of the 08 final.

Australian Open 2000 - Agassi vs Sampras.

Sampras was the dominant male. I still didn't really understand court conditions and whatever. I wasn't quite the tennis historian I am now. I just thought, Sampras is going to win. Things like, ''If you're watching, I'm coming'', and Wimbledon last year. All epic fails for our uncle Andre.

But not here.
Sampras was meh! in the fifth set.

I remember being almost too excited to sleep the night before.

I got up at 4AM to watch the 2009 Australian Open final. It was an amazing experience to watch that match.

This one felt like the final chapter for both Federer and Nadal. A winner take all match.

At this point in early 2017 Roger Federer had not won a grand slam title in almost five years. Nadal's last grand slam was almost three years earlier (a long time for both players) and the last time that they had met in a grand slam final was in 2011.

I had watched every match that Federer and Nadal played from the fourth round on.

They were both in amazing form that year.

But it didn't feel like it during those first four sets.

I felt like I was watching an exhibition match rather than an actual high quality struggle between the best two players in the world.

The fifth set was much different.

But those first four sets were not even close to the quality of the 2007 Wimbledon final or the 2009 Australian Open final.

BO5 - Del Potro d. Nadal 6-2 6-2 6-2 USO semi 2009

BO3 - Youzhny d. Nadal 6-1 6-0 Chennai final 2008

Probably not the best quality-wise, but they are some of my favorites.

Objective analysis of amazingness when? Not even a top 100 OE performance maybe
