Should've been all time high ranking.

Do you mean active players but sorted by the highest ranking they have ever achieved or a list of players from any era? If the latter, then see @kevin qmto's comment as to why I didn't do that. But I also wrote this precisely to try not to focus on the same "all time" players we always focus on and instead to focus on some lesser-known players. If the former, I can work on it.

@Phoenix* I think this is the list for non-slam champions sorted by highest all-time rank among active players and extended to a longer list. One challenge with doing it this way is determining who counts as an active player.

Active players who have never won a slam, sorted by career-high ranking

1=. Alex Zverev (#2)
1=. Casper Ruud (#2)
3=. Stefanos Tsitsipas (#3)
3=. Grigor Dimitrov (#3)
3=. Milos Raonic (#3)
6. Holger Rune (#4)

Tiafoe lost to Alcaraz in '22 UO in 5 sets at SF, after defeating Nadal at QF. That was his moment, and now he has regressed.

Congrats to Jan-Lennard Struff on his first career title in Munich! Only four days before he turns 34, as well!

Here is category A now, based on the rankings of 15 April:

a. Won a title

1. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (#27)
2. Jan-Lennard Struff (#25) (Struff now has a title!)
2. Tomas Martin Etcheverry (#30)
3. Roman Safiullin (#38)
4. Fabian Marozsan (#39)
5. Matteo Arnaldi (#40)

6. Sebastian Ofner (#43)

Condolences to Mariano Navone (#52), who today in Bucharest failed to win his first career title. Still, considering he hadn't even won a tour match prior to the week of 19 February, he's doing pretty well to have made two career finals (Rio and Bucharest) and one other semi-final (Marrakech).

Peak ranking #2 and never won above 250 has to be some kind of record. If Casper lose today i think its 8/8 final losses above 250.

Yeah. I don't know that he will ever win a 1000+ but you'd have to think he will one day win a 500.

Mind you, he is already a break down today.

Tsitsipas has never won a 500-level event, either, although he has four titles at a higher level (3 x Monte Carlo, 1 x WTF). Amazing how lost Tsitsipas was looking on hard courts, and now he may well end up winning Monte Carlo and Barcelona back-to-back and putting himself among the favorites for Roland Garros.

Oh, thank God. Well done Struff.

Oh, thank God. Well done Struff.

Struff winning a tour title > Fritz winning a title on clay, for sure!

Fritz actually did well to make a tour final on clay. I wouldn't have expected him to do so, unless perhaps it was in Houston. I guess he could be dangerous in Hamburg now that it's back in the spring, if he plays it. (He could do okay-ish at Madrid, but for his standards, making the final is doing much better than okay-ish!)

Fritz has never won a title indoors, and has actually only made two finals indoors. I imagine he'll win a title indoors eventually, though. He has five titles on outdoor hard and two on grass.

Struff has to defend those masses of Madrid points from last year, his ranking presumably will drop but his level suggests top 30 possibly top 20 by year end.

Yeah, without this win, he might well have dropped out of the top 50 after Madrid; as it is, he'll probably just about stay in the top 50 even if he loses early (though it depends on how other players do).

Congratulations to Casper Ruud on his first 500 title (and commiserations to Stefanos Tsitsipas for falling to 0-11 in finals at 500s)! Here are the relevant category updates:

c. Won a title at 500-level or higher [rankings of 15 April]

1. Casper Ruud (#6) Ruud won Barcelona 2024
1. Tommy Paul (#16)
2. Adrian Mannarino (#20)
3. Francisco Cerundolo (#21)
4. Nicolas Jarry (#22)
5. Frances Tiafoe (#23)

2. Holger Rune (#12)

Interesting that there are three players in the top 20 who have won 1000s but not won 500s!

Peak ranking #2 and never won above 250 has to be some kind of record. If Casper lose today i think its 8/8 final losses above 250.

This needs updating, too! He has now won a title above a 250! I stand by my assessment earlier today that it's 50/50 whether he'll ever win an MS event but that he would probably have won a 500 eventually whether or not he won today.

By the way, do you think Tsitsipas or Ruud could contend for Roland Garros? Given Alcaraz's injury status, I think it's possible. (If he were fully fit, I think he would be a daunting obstacle for either of them). Nadal's form and injury status are uncertain, Djokovic might not be the force he used to be, at least on clay, and Sinner's clay-court prowess is a little unclear, too. I wouldn't make either Tsitsipas or Ruud favorite for RG, but the event might be quite open, and I wouldn't rule either of them out, either.

By the way, do you think Tsitsipas or Ruud could contend for Roland Garros?
After today's triumph in Barcelona, never doubt Norwegian God.

This thread is full of losers. What a shame!
Therefore, a milestone of greatness is being striken out of these lists.

Well, if he doesn´t party too hard after winning his maiden title he might as well collect enough points to stay in the top 30. Thereafter things become a lot easier for him as he didn´t play Rome last year and lost in the 1st round at RG.

I believe that he needs to make at least the QF to stay in the top 30, and he is drawn to play Alcaraz in round 4. So I think him staying in the top 30 probably depends on Alcaraz not being fully fit. If Alcaraz is fit, it’s a daunting task for Struff to beat him.

Tend to agree - Struff to beat a fully fit Raz seems extremely unlikely. Let´s see how it works out.

Oof, narrow miss for Struff in a final set tiebreak against Alcaraz! And had he won that tiebreak, he would have had a decent outside shot against Rublev, I think, and a winnable semi. As it is, he is currently #40 in the live rankings - with Safiullin, Eubanks, and Sonego all having a chance to push him lower down the rankings if they do well in their challengers this week - and so has to go deep in Rome if he is to be seeded at Roland Garros. I'm not quite sure of this but I believe that the seedings for Rome are based on next week's rankings, which means he won't be seeded there. If they are based on this week's rankings, then he will be.

Less than two weeks after I said Fritz could do okay-ish in Madrid, he's got a semi-final against Rublev!

@sortof Tough luck for Struff again in Rome. Having not been seeded, he has been drawn to play Cachin in R1, which should be fine (despite Cachin doing decently well in Madrid), but then Tsitsipas in R2. It could be a winnable match but it's a tough match for so early in the tournament, especially after Tsitsipas's revived form in Monte Carlo and Barcelona.

Considering how the usual favorites are looking, I wouldn't be surprised if Tsitsipas or Ruud won next RG. Hell even Rublev.

Indeed, I looked at he draw already. A tough one! He hopefully manages to beat Cachin, against Tsits - one never knows until the last ball has been played. Throughout his career Struff was never seeded in such tournaments until he cracked the top 30 last year - nothing special for him.

It surprises me to see that he didn’t make the cut for category n when I did the OP, but congrats to Lorenzo Musetti, who made his first slam quarter-final at Wimbledon today, and who is the only man to make his maiden slam QF so far in 2024.

No update to category M, either, but congrats to Musetti on becoming both the only new slam quarter-finalist so far in 2024 and the only new slam semi-finalist so far in 2024. (Men's singles only - Donna Vekic will play her first slam semi-final tomorrow, and Jasmine Paoline, Miira Andreeva, Dayana Yastremska, and Qinwen Zheng all reached their first slam semi-final in 2024, too).

Here are categories M and N, who Musetti jumped past to make his first slam quarter-final and first slam semi-final:

m. Reached a slam semi-final

1. Andrey Rublev (#5): 0-10 in slam quarter-finals
2. Holger Rune (#7): 0-3 in slam quarter-finals
3. Alex de Minaur (#9): 0-3 in slam quarter-finals [N.B. Only actually got to play two of the three quarter-finals, unfortunately]
4. Taylor Fritz (#10): 0-4 in slam quarter-finals [N.B. lost two Wimbledon quarter-finals in five sets]
5. Ugo Humbert (#18): has never reached a slam quarter-final

Good results from your man, Table, at the regular tour level: he has won two titles in 2024 (Auckland and Mallorca) and was a game away from reaching the Rome final. Table did reach his first slam R3 at Wimbledon 2024, so look for him to make an R4 in 2025 with a bit of luck.

Baez also won two titles in 2024 without making a slam R4. Given that seven of his eight tour finals (including five of his six tour titles) have been on clay, it's a bit weird and Verdasco-esque that he has made R3 of both the AO and the USO but not of RG.

Congrats to Fritz on reaching his first slam SF!

No further update to category m needed, as the ninth-highest ranked player without a slam semi makes the semi over the second-highest ranked player in the category. So, category m is:

1. Andrey Rublev (#6)
2. Alex de Minaur (#10)
3. Holger Rune (#15)
4. Sebastian Korda (#16)
5. Ugo Humbert (#17)

Three new slam semi-finalists in men's singles this year:

- Lorenzo Musetti (at Wimbledon)
- Taylor Fritz (at the US Open)
- Jack Draper (at the US Open)

Only two new slam quarter-finalists in men's singles this year:

- Lorenzo Musetti (at Wimbledon)
- Jack Draper (at the US Open)

It's quite an odd turn of events, there being more new slam semi-finalists than slam quarter-finalists. Both new slam quarter-finalists won their quarter-final, and only one former quarter-finalist won a quarter-final.

Nice for Fritz to make it here after Musetti edged him out at Wimbledon. Fritz had lost two slam QFs in five sets. Meanwhile, De Minaur - who is now 0-4 in slam qfs, as Fritz was prior to yesterday's match - hasn't won a set in a slam QF. Rublev, famously, is something like 3-30 in sets at slam QFs!
