Now that Michelsen has turned 20 (his birthday was Sunday 25 August, so he was still 19 when he played the Winston-Salem final but 20 by the time the US Open began), there are again just two teenagers in the top 100: Mensik (who is 18 but turns 19 on Sunday 1 September) and Shang (who is 19 and a half).

There are three teens in the 101-200 ranks: #162 is Fonseca (who recently turned 18), #185 is Gaubas (who will turn 20 on 29 December), and #191 is Tien (who just broke into the top 200 on the back of his run in Winston-Salem and his long winning streak in challengers/futures this summer, and who is 18 and turns 19 on 2 December).

It was beginning to look as though there wouldn't be many teenagers around after Shang's birthday on 2 February 2024, but Fonseca and Tien have broken through recently.

Thanks for this. The ATP website recently stopped allowing one to sort the rankings by age and so this will be harder to keep track of going forward than it has been in the past. (You can still see the ages of each player in each ranking range, but the icon that used to sort them so that they were in ascending or descending age order isn't working anymore. With luck, they will fix it!)

The atp live rankings page still allows you to sort by < age.

The question is… who of these young’uns will evolve into champions, and who will stall out?

Luca Van Asscheeks was a teen ranked about #63 at some point last year, but now he is a 20-year-old ranked #112. So, let's put him in the latter category.

I think Mensik looks like he'll have a good career. Perhaps not a very top player but could be a top-tenner. Don't see Shang being a champion but he could be a consistent, scrappy player. Already is, to some extent, but he'll improve.

There are high hopes for Fonseca, of course, but it's still very early.

Haven't seen Learner Thien play yet. His run of results was impressive this summer, and he did well against Fils for the first two sets yesterday, but not so well for the third and fourth. What are your thoughts on him?

Fils is now 20 himself, but has a 500-level title with a win over Zverev and two career titles. Just made the R4 of a slam for the first time at Wimbledon right after turning 20. He can probably be about the same level as Mensik, I guess?

Prizmic is about a month older than Mensik, but has had a terrible year and is now ranked something like #350. Injured a fair amount but also just has lost form, it seems. But plenty of time for him.
