His NTRP rating and improvement suggestion?

by the looks of him, he's a junior and they don't have an ntrp rating..
one thing..
Tell him to lose the over the shoulder attempt for extreme angle forehand when approaching. He's got too good of a forehand to waste an opportunity with what turns out to be a dink.

You could advise him to not be so flatfooted after he serves; eventually his serves will be bigger, and thus the return will come back faster, and if he's caught flatfooted, it'll be tough to move to hit the next shot.

That's a sectional tournament?

Assuming the kid in the black shorts is you:

Sorry, but your footwork is not very good. You seem sluggish, slow, and awkward when running to balls, and you seem flat-footed.

Plant your feet on approach shots. That mini "Rafa" shot should not have been hit.

Your serve is all arm. There is virtually no knee bend, and no exploding contact into the ball.

Work on anticipating where your opponent will hit the ball.

In one of the early points where you hit a good crosscourt backhand, and followed it up with a nice crosscourt forehand, it seemed like you didn't expect your opponent to hit it back, and when he DID hit it back, you were caught off guard, out of position, and out of awareness.

Yeah, I'd say that he needs better footwork and better net play. In a couple of points he was at the service line and then retreated to "no man's" land where he got jammed and lost the point. When he hit those shots, he should have advanced to the net and prepared for a volley, in my opinion. What I do like is that he still keeps his regular service motion on his second serve and doesn't "dink" it over. Third he can work on a better knowledge of court positioning. Bollettieri's Tennis Handbook has a good section on court positioning. I think as his footwork improves, so will his strokes. Good luck! Keep playing.

1. Serve
2. Footwork
3. Backhand, he only hit a couple backhands but none of them really looked effective..was a level or 2 lower then his forehand.

He could be a 3.0-3.5 if he was an adult right now..like someone said before..NTRP rankings are for adults.

Yes, it's a sectional tournament for junior team tennis. It doesn't have a tough requirement, so players are so-so.

Many thanks for all the spot on comments!!!

Just one think though, how does one "explode into the ball" on serve? Would more knee bend, hip-out, shoulder-over-shoulder-cart-wheel are what needed?

Many thanks again!

Search for a thread started by "Eph" in this forum. Myself and a few other members went into excruciating detail ;)
