Hitting GroundStrokes Faster

I want to improve my groundstrokes in an effecient, quick way.

I practice every day, and can't wait to play because its beautifull outside right now.

I take a once-a-week lesson, for technique improvements.

Don't have access to a ball machine, so I use walls.

I've researched as much as I can?

I could also use a little advice on quick legwork since I seem to be lagging on returning approach shots, although I am very fast.

All the best, Jason

Well there are many ways that can give you extra pace on your shots but without a videoclip we can't pinpoint what the problem is. I recommend looking at an instructional site such as hi-techtennis.com.

is there some reason the person giving you lessons cannot help you in this respect. or just looking for extra tips? do you have a long or short swing? what grip ? what rack ?

My swing is fairly long, and that is a good website. Thanks for the quick responses. I think I'll be able to manage, my instructor seems sub-par in this respect but oh well. I'll keep working on improving.

All the best, Jason

there is one interesting thread here about Whippier action on groundstrokes with several video links. do give it a look.

here is some newbie advice. foa, i am not suggesting a high powered rack which some might.
assume you are using a low powered rack, you have to generate rack head speed.
what i find that has worked for me is a long swing, but more important "throwing the rack at the ball", almost slinging it at the last moment. its prolly what they refer to as whipping. this requires a loose grip on the rack. the rack is kept back for quite a while and then slung forward late. so the head goes faster than the rest of the rack. as opposed to muscling the ball.

obviously if you want the ball to go faster, you will be looking at a flatter shot with less topspin.

i again suggest looking at some other threads where the experts have discussed this a lot and given many video links.

OP (in2theriver), you are giving links in your post (at end) that are actually a few "free" tips that link to videos that are being sold.

not sure if this is correct here.
if you must, please stop calling it free.

Using swing speed radar, I find that adding a full shoulder turn (unit turn) at setup and then torso rotation driven from the hips into the swing can easily provide another 10-20mph to the racquet head speed even though you won't necessarily feel that you're swinging the racquet harder (your body does more of the work).

Try it and see if your shots don't have more pace.

For the quick leg work I've been running a lot of sprints, also been practicing tempo stuff.

I like the full shoulder turn idea, seems like a good way to get my body to be adding power, but it also seems to throw me off balance. I need to learn to adjust my positioning in order to keep the same accuracy I want.

Update on my progress:

For those of you who care about this, I found a new trainer (James) who seems far more skilled than my last trainer

It is my opinion now that if you are going to pay anyone to teach you tennis, don't cheap out. It is worth it to get a skilled trainer who knows what he is doing and how to teach.

My game is improving tenfold.
