Hitting on the rise

its funny because its 1 in a million, we all know Fed has the most rock solid mother%^$#%ing slice

BTW when you do practice sets, how are you predominantly returning backhands? Are you mostly practicing on clay?

This season we're on grass and i've switched to slicing all my backhand returns, it works really well so far. Its a bit harder on hardcourt though i find when the ball sits up more. But I find on the grass the ball is so quick and skids so low, its near impossible to time a good one hander. So the best option is a block anyway, weather thats a more neutral block or a slice block doesn't really seem to matter.. but the slice block requires no grip change.

Its winter indoor season so I play on hard or carpet 80-85% the rest is clay indoors.

I slice returns alot specially against fast serves, but im working on coming over alot lately also, needs alot more work tho its not that highly developed yet against good fast serves.

I think theres a reason for that TBH. Guys with 1hbhs generally aren't amazing returners... Stan mostly slices, Fed mostly blocks... I mean, Almagro maybe is an example who mostly topspins (i think) his 1hbackhand... but he has no grip change between his fh and bh.

The benefit of the 1hbh aside from the beauty and grace, is the extra spin and pace you can inject if its well timed and well set up. The timing is harder, the contact zone smaller, generally its much worse on defense than the slice or the 2hbh. And the return (at least the 1st serve) is generally a defensive shot.

#noshame in the slice return

What if its lower than chest height?
as long as contact is above the net, you can drive the trajectory pretty close to straigh out off the racket. When contact gets a bit lower, since the ball has to be lifted past net height, things get a bit more tricky.

That's where you use the force.
