Hitting People with the ball.

Dude, that's the FIRST place you protect.

Was hit in the temple by an overhead in a mxd dubs tourney. Was on queer street for 10 minutes during which my padner mentioned she thought I was a good player. Thats what you get when you pick based on a hot dress.

I hit my doubles partner in the back of the head with a serve yesterday. Total shank.

Seems kind of cold to call your partner a "total *****" just because she got in the way of your serve. :)

edit: I didn't know my slight re-working of "shank" would get the asterisk treatment, but it looks kind of good like that.

She wasn't calling her partner a "shank" or a *****, what she means is she miss hit the ball off the frame, shanking the ball.

If you put me in the hospital, I will put you in the morgue (Just Kidding). And so on and so on and so on...

Come on, enough with the tough talk (not just by you but by several others in previous posts).

Not tough talk, You can hit me anywhere else, anytime but you aim for
and hit me in the face and it's on.

Sorry, but I didn't know you were making a feeble attempt at humor. Maybe next time add a smiley face to it so we understand your objective.

Feeble is often (some say always) the best I can do, sorry. By the way, there was a smiley face.

Oh my God. We had an invite today and we played some absolutely ridiculous kids. This were terrible, hit only high spinny balls directly to my forehand and closed in to 3 inches away from the net. I never wanted to hit them, but it was kind of unavoidable, and I smacked 'em like 6 or 7 times just off of forehands, really hard too. They went down a couple of times...

That clip is AWESOME and it stands for much of what this thread is about.

Final answer: each of these two shots were legal (though that serve was pretty mean).

That clip WAS awesome. IMO, Kendrick came off badly. He's the net man. He's gotta be prepared for that volley - it's not like he was defenseless out there. Don't want to get hit? Use your racquet or retreat to the baseline.

Wow so I have never really hit anyone with the ball before and in a doubles match last week managed to hit both of the opponents on separate occasions.

First one I hit in the foot, I was poaching a week shot and hit an overhead straight into the foot. This was kind of funny because in a previous match he hit a girl on another court in the foot with a stray serve so I told him it was pay back for her.

Second one, again poaching a shot I had to stretch out for caught the ball on the backhand side and it volleyed back into the guys chest not too hard though. I said oops and apologized.

Anyone else ever get on a spree like this?

I hit more people two years ago, when I was a bit wild with my overhead, than I do now. That being said, I don't count the feet, because hitting to (or at) someone's feet is a valid play.

To address some of the subsequent conversation: With regard to the net person, I keep it simple. If a player is "staying home" and not poaching, I generally leave them alone, aside from maybe hitting behind them if I get pulled wide. If they start to poach, they make themselves part of the court, and hitting at them is acceptable.

hitting opponents with the ball

usually it is not intentional, if you play doubles and are at the net, and the lob is short expect to get hit

best to turn your back so you dont get hit in the face or get off the court or duck below the net

you need to pay attention and really concentrate

btw, i have been hit many times and have hit people before, never intentional

I have a habit of nailing the net person with shots that I meant to wing down the line on serve returns. This is a hard-hit ball so usually they take a body blow rather than volley the ball, as it's coming straight at the solar plexis, and there's no time to react.

I always apologize - I wish I could hit closer to the outside line, it would be a better shot.

as long as it not malicious it is all good (in my book).
and yes, that area can be grey and even veiled at times.
anyhow..

if i throw up some weaksauce i kinda expect to "eat it".
too often, the partner actually eats it, but you'll have that.

i don't gun for people, but i'm not afraid to hit it near/at them usually/preferably low if that's the right shot.

BS. If I'm in a professional-level match, a ball coming right at me is the LAST thing I would expect. I would expect my opponent to try and hit the ball somewhere I would not have a chance at returning it. That was a HUGE d**k move by Paes, and he deserved the retaliatory shot.

Had that been 1980s McEnroe, he might have gotten punched.

I usually try to hit to the guy on the net more often than not, the wise thing to do is to aim to his feet, actually this my favorite play, serve wide, get high return back and then volley to the guy on the net or, when returning, deep return come to the net get and if I get a high ball - volley to the guy in the net, if I get a good low return I just keep volleying till I get a high ball and once again volley to the guy at the net, it works 90 out 100 times. I guess that the best you can do to avoid been hit - besides stay away from the net - is to find a really good partner.

Anyone ever punch Lendl after his head shots?

This is exactly why I like to drill the net person at my first opportunity.

Do any of you drill the net person if it's a woman? I only did that once in my life and I felt really, really bad. Got her right in the boob and she started crying.

Yep, did this in sectionals last year. The opposing team preferred to be right up on the net, and they both had weak serves. And they liked to hit them to my backhand till they figured out it was pretty solid.
I like to test the net person early on, so I'll crank a return or two right at them to see if they can handle it. I hit the guy right above the net in the belly. Their next service game I got the woman in the chest. It had the desired effect. They backed off the net a good 5-10 feet.
I did get dirty looks for the rest of the match.
