Holger Rune: “I can beat his Roland Garros record”

No one picked Rune to win this one though despite what he said. Alcaraz is the heavy favorite, and Djokovic is the solid second favorite.

Rune played the better tennis today however
You have to take into account forced errors as well to get the full picture, where Ruud applied double the pressure forcing Rune into 44 errors as opposed to only being forced into only 23.

Once you add winners and forced errors you have Ruud at earning 76 points with only 29ue or gifted points while Rune with 71 points earned and and 47 ue.

The Ruud match was always going to be tricky considering their history and how they match up, I was 50-50 on his quarter final outcome.

So was I. But he had a realistic chance to do better than he did. So it is a slight missed opportunity to make progress.

He is still very young and likely has years in which to improve so no need to panic.

"Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars"

I do think you can shoot for the moon without making it a public statement, though
I think saying “I’m gonna win Roland Garros“ is enough. You don’t need to go out and say you’ll win it 15 times. lol
Like me saying I can knock out prime Tyson after winning a fight against Bobby in the school playground.

BeatlesFan and Rune were rumored to have met for dinner at a glitzy French restaurant in Paris this year, a few days before the start of Roland Garros.

Beatlesfan decided on the Rack of Lamb.
Rune (whose French is not as proficient as his dinner partner's) held up his menu and boldly declared
to the waiter "I'll have the Rack of Slams!" :)

This is why I love TT :)

Rune can't beat Rafa's record.

As good as he might be, Rune will never touch any of the records held by the Big 3! It makes no sense to even muse about it since they lasted 20+ years! No top player will ever be abe to stay on tour & viable as a champion! They'll brk. down or their abilities will fail them! It's just not possible & people need to stop fooling themselves! :sneaky: :D

You say clear but people will still be arguing for Borg. Even with Nadal at 14 heck the odd person does (in the minority sure but still)

Borg is still elite and above most w/ inferior equipment of the 70's! Nadal will never be as impressive to me as he had all kinds of technology behind him in those 14 titles! Borg literally played with a wooden stick and accomplished so much including the "Channel Slam" 3 times w/ less time to prepare! :giggle: :sneaky::D:laughing:

There was also a lot less worldwide competition, the game wasn't played at nearly the same speed, and everyone has all the same "technology" during their respective eras so the "technology" point is moot. The better racquets and strings makes the game harder at the higher levels, not easier. The French is still the hardest major to win, so Nadal's fourteen is far more impressive than Borg's six.

You also rank Borg higher than Fed at wimbledon?

@Mark-Touch I'm veggie, so no lamb for me. Thanks for the Holger-inspired post though. :)

Too late now. Nadal was on 2 French Opens already at age 20, and there were only 4 years between 2005-2022 when Nadal didn't win the French Open. There's no way for Rune.
