Holger Rune has a new coach

Facts not propanganda
This is a mug thread made specifically for mugs. Hence the titles says Rune.

Djoker has zero relevancy to this.

Forehand take back has a hitch (the unit turn is 2 pieces). Somewhat related, if his opponent plays straight up the middle to him he doesn't create adequate space. (He actually hits the FH pretty well on the run).

His serve...it's not how I would teach it, but I don't really see anything wrong technically. The year he won Bercy he was serving bombs.

He floats his slice backhand. No surprise, his (what, twice, three times?) former coach is teaching him 80's era technique here. As usual, PM has no idea what he's talking about. All modern players with a good slice finish across their body. (Tsitsipas also has a terrible slice BH, some coincidence that he's also a PM disciple).

Rune has solid technique on the 2HBH, IMO.

All of that said, IMO it cannot be understated that the vast majority of what is hurting him is between the ears, not how he hits the ball.
I don't agree with all of it but most of it.

His albow is not up at the FH and it becomes a rushed movements. The flowting slice is not so good. He needs to be more aggressive like the Federer style.

The crazy part is the one day he has a good FH and slice and the next they are horrible.

Confidence and gameplan would make wonders for Rune. We simply never know what version shows up.

Yup, his elbow is not up (enough) on the FH take back. Which, could be related to the “hitch” that I was referring to. Either way, if the take back is not efficient and repeatable (which it is not IMHO)…then bad outcomes, like being rushed as you pointed out, are likely to follow.

Indeed, he is all over the map. He can play lights out one day, or even sometimes for a string of matches. Then he lays an egg. Or he lays a whole swath of eggs for an extended period.

Obviously the coaching carousel that has ensued has not helped. And his technical deficiencies, though maybe not as severe as some other examples, aren’t helping matters either. A qualified coach with a calming influence, who will be around for the long haul, would do wonders. (But I suspect a few of the past coaches at least have gotten in there and pulled the ripcord early…for reasons we can only speculate about…none of which are good).

We also have to remember that the head coach is his mom.

It's a bad situation for the secundary coaches (Mouratoglou, Severin Lüthi, Boris Becker etc) who actually know something about tennis.

Yeah, for me she’s the most likely reason some big name coaches have come and gone so quickly.
