Olympics happening during the heart of the summer North America hardcourt season, in a time zone far away, are going to make top players less inclined to play. Not because it’s unimportant, but because it’s so disruptive to an important part of the season for maintaining the ranking, and the ranking correlates strongly with income because it affects seeding.

They may initially commit, but give them an excuse to miss it, and they will take it.

Withdrawing gives them a much needed rest break too, following the extended almost non-stop grind of the clay-grass swing.

yes i am. look at top30 players in time of 2 previosly OG and who of them actually played. so both times 5 of top10, 10 of top20 and 16 of top30 players was missing. and something like that never heppens at slams, WTFs and masters. even at MC, the only non mandatory master.
