Holy Crap Screw Luxilon Alu Power

I just tried the 330 foot 28 buck reel of Ashaway MonoGut 17g and holy cow this string plays just like alu power because of the fluorocarbon emulsion, but slightly better at better then 1/3rd the price. This mono gut is not the best tension holding poly, but to reduce tension loss greatly I pulled then released then pulled the tension again and wow it really helps.

Dont take my sorry ass word for it , just read the reviews

Ashaway MonoGut 17 String
http://www.tennis-warehouse.com/descpageACASH-MONOGUT17.html
Price: 3.99

A multi-polymer monofilament synthetic gut offering the durability of a monofilament, but with the responsiveness of a synthetic gut. Designed for hard hitters seeking a durable string without the harsh feel associated with durability hybrids.

* Gauge: 17 / 1.22mm
* Length: 40 feet / 12m
* Construction: Multi-polymer monofilament synthetic gut extruded in Germany with a fluorocarbon emulsion
* Color: Silver

Why pay out the rear for luxilon when you can get the same results for 4 bucks a set? Lets all save cash!

My second reel is on the way, as I can charge allmy friends 10 bucks a set for the string and 15 for stringing it, and they get the results they want from a poly. its a win win

get itttttt

ps: If you want it to last longer get 16g, and the 16g holds tension better anyway.

LoL, you're very enthusiast. How long have you been playing with Monogut?

You should know it's tension holding is rather average and quite possbily worse than alu.

Heh, it plays like an alu clone for 10 sets, then it's gone.

I tried Monogut before. I thought it had more pop than ALU did and a little more forgiving. But both are good strings in my opinion. Monogut is definitely a good bargin though.

I strung up 2 frames one at 64/64 and one at 62/62 where i would pull once, then pull a second time on on my star 2 constant pull babalot machine.

After 1 hr with each frame the 62/62 is tighter.

So if you want to stop the tension loss people pull twice then clamp.

You'd probably be stretching it to get 20 playable sets out of alu.

Look i'm not saying monogut is complete crap, because it isn't.

I quite enjoyed it for a small amount of time. But its tension holding isn't on the same level as alu. It's worse.

A news agent, look for a shelf with rubberbands, they'll be in a green rectangular box. They come in different sizes, but the size 64 is the best.

Afaik Agassi used this size.

I read the reviews on monogut and they all sound positive. Some of the reviews claim that the string offers a great cupping effect. I find that hard to believe. Did you notice a cupping effect with monogut?

Is monogut a poly or not? TW classifies it as a poly, but the description on the string says: blah blah blah synthetic gut. Which is it?

mono gut does have better cupping then alu power, as its softer.

when you string and play with the string you can tell it plays like and feels like a poly with the softness of a syn gut.

i was sure before it arrived that it was not a poly, but as soon as i touched it i was sure it was a poly.

ITS ALL ABOUT THE fluorocarbon emulsion that gives it the same sliding poly effect as luxilon at 1/3 the price.

For the price, I haven't been able to beat MONOGUT. The poly players I service break everything in less time than the lack of tension holding becomes a major issuse.:cool:

alu power is a great string but Monogut is a hell of a bargain. if money was an issue and I didn't get most of my stuff for free, then I would definitely go with the monogut.

This evidence suggests that Luxilon screwed up by not acquiring an exclusive license for the fluorocarbon technology. Sell your Luxilon stock ASAP before it drops like a rock.

yep. as the other strings like monogut become known that they have the flurocarbon as well and people try them, then people will think twice about paying soo much for luxilon

luxilon is ripping us all off if you ask me.

we all need to stand up and fight the overpriced luxilon and start to buy ashaway monogut

I have made several posts here about how much I like Monogut 17. Some people complain about its tension-holding ability, but I found it rather good. I can play with a Monogut hybrid for a month, playing 3 times a week, 3 hours a day.

Monogut is great if you like to restring every couple of days. In fact, a fresh hybrid with monogut feels better than almost anything.. for about 10 minutes.
But after that, I definitely feel a tension loss even if I pre-stretch the strings.

I pay the extra for Lux ALU because it holds tension for weeks for me.
Unique Big Hitter is a nice compromise...

I think they are priced about right for their performance/tension holding capabilities. If you can string often and fast, Monogut is definitely worth it, but I hate stringing so I go for the best tension holder of the group.

I don't think Luxilon is scared of the imitators... yet... but I hope some more copycats come along.... I would love to pay around $7 for ALU!

your right. and to compensate i have strung a few lbs tighhter. i def think monogut will lose more, but all you have to do is string a bit tighter, and let the strings settle in.

They actually play diff. The mono gut is actually a Multi-polymer monofilament synthetic gut extruded in Germany with a fluorocarbon emulsion.

Monogut will notch much quicker then alu power, thus loosing tension quicker.

The wilson enduro pro plays closer to alu power.

Monogut might play even better with a few string savers

According to the Racquet Sports Industry's findings, Luxilon Big Banger lost 17-19 lbs of tension (depending on whether you get the original or the rough), while Unique Big Hitter lost 18 lbs, and Monogut lost 20 lbs. It doesn't seem that much of a difference to me.

In fact, Monogut held tension better than Yonex Toughbreed and Gosen Polylon SP.

When I get my racquet strung, I let it sit for a day or two, and then I do not notice that rapid tension loss. Perhaps hybridizing it with a synthetic gut helps a bit in that department, too.

I'll stick with my 700 foot Cyberflash reel for $50 :)
good deal i think. i still have to try cyberflash, but i want to stick with an american company , but love many strings out there.

does cyberflash notch after a few set or slide off each other until it breaks?

thanks

This is going to shock you, but I think Monogut cups better than some natural gut. I should know, since I have used BDE Performance and am using Klip Legend Gut (coated) 17 g right now. I love the extra spin I get with Monogut and it has plenty of touch for a Serve & Volleyer like me.

But natural gut lasts me 2-3 months whereas Monogut is only good for a few weeks. If you consider the labor cost involved in restringing (even if its my own labor), natural gut is worth its price.
