Federer is going to be 7th, but he only has to defend a QF appearance at US and he can (possibly) better it. What's worrying is defending his WTF points and his SF at the Australian Open next year.

But what's holy crap in that? Wouldn't that ranking then give a better idea of how players have done in recent past than it gives now? Yeah, watching Fed at 7 feels like crap though, I agree. Mist had thought he would retire before living to see that day.

Federer out of the top 10 after next years AO?

Shanghai and other tournaments that he didn't win last year could give him a point boost this year if he gets his head out of his stubborn behind and plays better and smarter. Also I think he skipped Paris last year, so he could possibly get quite a big boost from playing and making it deep in the draw.

What I'm worried about for him is being out of the top 5, which means he has a chance of playing a dangerous top player possibly earlier in the draw.

a federer as 7th seed is going to strike fear into the top 3's hearts. i think federer is still the 2nd favorite for the US Open, after djokovic. federer's US open record is just too brilliant to ignore. and from what we saw last night, he is playing brilliantly too. don't write him off.

Fred has proven this week that he's rounding into form.

He's one of the four main contenders in New York, regardless of ranking.

Still think on a good serving day, Fed can take out anyone but Nadal at the USO. Ralph is too much of a matchup issue for Fed to overcome, I mean he couldn't even beat him in Cincy,USO is even harder now.

BTW look at all the gloating done by Ralph fans. Humbalito wouldn't be proud of them surely?

Not that sure, if he needs 3 sets against Haas and doesn't beat Rafa in the best of 3 sets then i let you imagine a 5 setters against Rafa :-?

He'll need to win all his matches in 3 sets, 4 or 5 sets will be too much for his body.

He certainly played a strong set and a half, but you can't only look at those 21 games and ignore the pattern of the past year. An aging great like Fed showed he can still have his moments, but doing it for seven matches of 5 setters is a different story... from the 7 seed no less, with the potential of a brutal draw.
