Way too early to say. If he wins USO (about 50-50 now) then we'll talk. Also depends if Rog can snag this Wimbledon now that the draw's opened up. Honestly, if he wins this Wimbledon then I would say no unless Djoker managed 2-3 slams on average for the next 3 years.

If Roger wins this Wimbledon, that would be almost a nail in the coffin for Djokovic.

The best he could ever hope for is probably to tie Roger then. It would be basically a wrap. I can bet you he's rooting for AM.

If Djokovic wins the USO I think he'll still have a reasonable shot of getting to 17 but I suspect it won't matter much since Federer will most likely have 18 by then anyway.

I put him as the fav now, regardless of how good Murray is playing. While this isn't the peak Fed of years gone by, he is a very cunning guile grass court player, this is his natural habitat where he is able to accentuate his strengths and hide his weaknesses more than any other surface. I also feel he has been improving with every match, and in fact, I have seen his level increment within each individual match also. The forehand is steadily getting heavier, and the serving is getting sharper. I wouldn't compare this to USO14 purely because this is without a doubt his best surface, and I don't expect him to be blown off the court. Djokovic was the one who truly stood in his way, his confidence should be soaring now that Novak won't be there.
You said guile… Like streetfighter...

Not now Novak's gone out mate. I'm actually quite looking forward to seeing how the 2nd week pans out. :)
Humility rare to find on these forums and you've got it, refreshing to see.

That from a longtime diehard Fed fan that has had a hard time watching Djokovic beat him over and over again nowadays.

I agree with your sentiment as well, the nervous ones are the Federer and Murray fans. This is a big opportunity.

Edit - removed some content (too late as it was quoted, my apologies) as I don't want to spoil results for people that haven't watched today's matches yet. I want to ask you all if you think that by the time both Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer are retired - who will have more GS wins?

You can feel free to chime in on the G.O.A.T. debate if you wish, but I'm really just reducing my question to whether or not Djokovic passes him.

Who do you think will most stand in Djokovic's way as he quickly approaches his thirties? Who will be the next young talent to finally break through and win a slam?

Me personally? I see no signs of Novak slowing down, despite aging. We've seen a real drop-off in guys like Tsonga, Berdych, Ferrer, etc and Nadal and Federer certainly aren't getting any older. Speaking of Nadal, if you still think Nadal can/will pass Federer's total, I left an option in the poll to vote so. I personally think it's more likely Nadal never gets another slam again than manages to pass Federer, but we'll see.

As far as Djokovic is concerned, he's virtually the heavy favorite in every slam nowadays. The other top players usually offer little resistance against him H2H. If ends up with 3/4 slams this year, nobody will be that surprised. Which would leave him at 14 already. I really find it hard to believe Novak won't pass Federer. I don't think his decline will come fast enough for him not to catch the mark. Granted, technically Federer can still add to the total of 17, but as a die-hard Federer fan I'm really just praying to see 1 more.

What do you guys think? Does Djokovic catch him? I say yes. I don't see a decline fast enough nor do I see many formidable opponents down the line. With Federer he basically always had to get by Murray/Nadal/Djokovic. Conversely, Murray/Nadal/Federer as it stand do not pose much challenge to Nole.

FTFY

This is bullying.

Probably not Djokovic. But Nadal still has a good shot at it. Still the favorite at the French and hopefully he and Djokovic can battle it out once again for a few more years.

We Nole fans know Djoker isn't immortal, and he won't win 8 Slams. Out hopes rest on Nadal now, as long as Djokovic stays competitive with him and Nadal DOESN'T BEAT HIM IN MELBOURNE!

I really hope Anderson ended the Federer age of darkness (his fans won't like that term, but that's what it was for me) for good, and Nadalovic rise once more.

Who will be the next young talent to finally break through and win a slam?

If we can consider djokovic *young* (youngest of big5)

Unless Thiem,Zvev and Kyrgios start their ascencion as slam winners

Lol please....

Name a professional male tennis player who ever came remotely close to winning 8 slams after age of 29

Roger federer (one and only one)
(Records at slam after 29th bday)

1st July 2016- Novak on rampage and it looked like it's a matter of time he crossed 17.
This thread was relevant back then.

1st July 2018- Novak is down, still on 20. Roger and Rafa are at 20 and 17 respectively.

Novak probably wins Wimbledon and goes to 13. But another 7 slams, takes a long long time

Djokovic became the dominant player following his AO win in 2011. His 9th slam win of that period (leaving aside AO 2008) was at the USO 2015. So if he can win today...then win consistently until the AO 2023 he can get to 21 slams. Not much to ask is it?

The gap is the same as when I made this thread. Also lol @ me thinking RAFA might not win another slam.

"Who will stand most in Djokovic's way" - RAFA lol.

It's fun to revisit these. 20-15 now. Will Djokovic do it

Holy cannoli. Poke head into thread, click on poll to see what the voting looks like... a full 80% voting no, there!

A few short weeks ago, there were people trumpeting their humble predictions for 19, 20, and more major titles for Djok! One tough loss, and that's it, eh?

If any poast has ever more brilliantly and succinctly described this website to a t than this one, I haven't seen it.

The most honest answer should be like this: I dont know

At modest rate of 2 majors a year, he only needs 2 and a half year. He has to set his goal on it by shortening his clay season and skipping some tournaments he usually plays.
A big focus on majors. He is my favorite to win RG this year.

1 RG
2 USo
2 Ws

Less than honest opinion. Rodge's records is good as gone.

Given he doesnt get injured. Which is very possible given his style of play.

My gut feeling is Djokovic, Nadal, Federer all end up with a low of 20 slams and a high of 22. Not sure who will end up highest, there might well be a tie of some sort. Nadal I could see maybe being as low as 19. Would be surprised if Djokovic ended up lower than 20, and obviously Fed cant end up lower than 20.

The big thing is a lot of us, myself included, thought Federer's count was a stationary target which has proven to be a mistake. I still think he is capable of winning Wimbledon until he retires. While I don't expect Federer to get past 20, which is incredible he did push it from 17-20, I would hardly be surprised if he did bag another.

Djokovic on the other hand is very interesting - as is Nadal if his clay domination continues. I personally still have RAFA as my FO favorite. I wouldn't be surprised if someone else could take down Djokovic there, especially with the pressure attached to him now.

I personally wish there was more to tennis than the slam race right now, but until someone, anyone, else steps up..it's all we've really got in terms of the biggest storylines.

I don't know if I would scream in celebration, stare in disbelief or die of laughter if he pulled that off. :-D

Still thinking it's a very slim chance. Same gap, while he is nearly three years older now. However I think he got himself back in the race with Nadal.

I always saw it as unlikely due to projections and history. The fact Djokovic has been playing pro so long didn't help. His body has a lot of miles on it.

I think he ends at 14 or 15.

I'm picking him to win FO but then gets murky after that. Still don't think he passes and don't see him getting closer than 18 but we'll see.

20-18-18 would be an interesting spread, although I've said Novak could overtake Fed without the record.

Wow.
I feel horrible. I doubted Nole myself.

He's given us a miracle beyond our wildest dreams. He continues to add chapters to his story of legend. And he fulfilled my wish too!

As said before, things can change quickly in tennis. Djokovic lost two of his precious peak years to himself, and he can do that again. He has shown before how his form can fall off a cliff unexpectedly, and there is no knowing what event in future can cause that again. He perfectly executes the contemporary game style but his style does not have bail out qualities like Fed's serve/1-2 punch or Nadal's inherent lefty advantage, so the moment he falters a bit mentally or physically, he can be taken out by any of the zoning competitors or one of the future top 5. Both Fed and Nadal have had to change their playing style and approach with age, and Djokovic will have to do the same.

All that being said, its still prudent to bet in favor of Djokovic rather than against him. And if he surpasses Federer by winning more slams in the near future, rest assured that that will not settle the GOAT debate in his favor too. The weak era argument will bite him, the what would he have done in 90's grass argument will bite him, and his losses to nobodies and Fed both would bite him. Similar to how Federer has some place to go even against a zoning peak Djokovic, Federer fans will have some place to go in the GOAT debate against Djokovic.
