How about a Fed/Tsonga final? .....Tsonga wins

I;m a fan of Fed, but would like to see the drama build and him not break Samps record so early, as I am also a fan of Sampras. In fact, he could possibly go the year with no majors and still be two behind Samps going into '09.

In any case Tsonga is a breath of fresh air, and it's not like he didnt earn his way into the final as he beat Murray, Youzny, Nadal, Gasguet...i look for him to play a great match and to match up well with whoever he gets in the final. In fact he plays a lot like a two handed federer I think, but finds his way to net more often which is awesome. I also like how he held it together against Nadal, as he could have done a Fish or Roddick meltdown over some really bad officiating. instead he showed a lot more composure and class than a couple players with more experience

It's also great to have a great athlete playing well in a sport which has become <in general> more of a trained sport than an athletic one. Props also to the French Tennis Federation for developing such a stable of individual players rather than clones

Bandwagon, anyone?

It's too early to tell. Remember Baghatatis, Gonzalez?

France produced many flashy players in the past, but inconsistent. We have to wait and see if Tsonga defies the trend.

How about you first wait for Federer to beat Djokovic before start thinking about Federer-Tsonga final.

As much I'd like to see Tsonga win, it will be a walk in the park for Fed, like his AO Final matches against Gonzo, Baghadis..... hopefully Tsonga will make me eat crow.

I hate to talk early but Fed will have a tough match agains the Djoker. Anyhow, I hope he will beat Tsonga in the final if he makes it.

I'd love to see Fed get a Grand Slam this year. I think he could go down in history as the greatest ever. That said...I think that Tsonga guy is the Real Deal. Whoever meets him in the final is going to have their hands full.

The final 2 is correct, but the outcome is not. Federer will beat Tsonga in straight sets.

I don't know about that. If Tsonga plays the way he did against Nadal, its possible he could beat Federer in the final, thats if he beats Djoker first.

Hey don't count Djokovic out yet. i know its not likely that he'll beat federer but doesn't mean he won't beat him.

I was impressed by Tsonga awhile back. As long as he's healthy, watch out.

Tsonga in 3 or Federrer in 5, It's physically tough to keep up that level of touch, power and placement for 5 sets.

I just finished watching the Tsonga v. Nadal match on TiVo. The way he played I would pick him to win against Djokivic, against Federer is a different story. No matter how much I want Tsonga to win, I just can't bet against Federer right now because he's that good. However, I don't think it will be an easy win for Fed should he even win it, I think Tsonga has the game to make him play a tough 5 setter.

Gonzo is a totally one-dimensional player. Baggs isn't as bad, but he doesn't have the variety OR the power that Tsonga has shown. I think there is something different about Tsonga than those other guys that have had dream finals, especially because Tsonga gets the extra day of rest and he had a short SF match. His power and variety and all-court game should prove a hard match for Federer or Djokovic. If, and it's a big it, but if JWT can play in the final like he did last night, I would like his chances against anyone.

Fed in 3 or 4, depending on what happens with Joker. If he's pushed vs Joker, I say Fed in 4.

Is everyone forgetting that Fed has to get through an in-form Novak?

My money where my mouth is? What did I say exactly?

2 to 1? Yeah right. Federer has failed to win a hard court slam one time since the beginning of 2004. Those odds aren't even close to what they should be.

All I'm saying is that there's no point in acting like you're a soothsayer when you're picking the obvious outcome. And there's no fun in saying Federer wins in straights over and over when there are still other players to be hopeful for.

Rickson, it's not a done deal. Just because Federer will probably win doesn't mean you KNOW it's going to happen. There is still tennis to be played. Federer is not in the finals. He's in the semi-finals. What exactly is the rush in imagining Federer holding the trophy? Where's the fun in that?

Storm, while it looks like I picked the obvious winner, I picked Roger from the start, and I stuck with him when he was down a set to Tipsarevic. I picked Roger not to win RG and I'm sticking with that. Take the bet, dude. A 10 reel overgrip bet. You'll get 2 packs if Tsonga wins. You in or not?

I like Fed, but I think Tsonga would totally make things so much more interesting at least for a few weeks. Tsonga already beat 3 top 10 players, of course Fed is totally different from them. Good luck, and go Tsonga. If he's playing Joko, then I'm DEFINITELY rooting for Tsonga. But hopefully Fed will bagel Joko right out of the sport of tennis.

That's the problem with your statement. Neither Federer nor Djokovic play like Nadal. It would be a different match against those two compared to agaist Nadal. Nadal's balls sit up for Tsonga to bash his flat stroke. He will have to play differently against those two.

Tsonga looks unbeatable, but how many times have we seen other players destroy their opponents just as easily, only to lose to Federer in the finals? The thing that separates Federer from Sampras and other champions is that momentum from previous matches have no effect on Federer. Hewitt didn't drop a set in the first 6 rounds of the US Open in 2004, and we all know what happened once he reached Federer.

Point is, I'm really surprised how few people are supporting Federer, when he made his living giving reality checks to player who seemed to be in Tsonga-like form.

agreed. feder just excels against people who are expected to give him a hard time. plus, tsonga hits flat. federer hits flat. only Safin has managed to beat Federer on Hardcourts when he's at his best going toe to toe groundies. i personally don't think that Tsonga really has the firepower to keep up a big rally against Fed's flat shots.

but we'll see. but im 90 percent sure Federer does this in 4.

If it goes 5 sets, Federer wins. That's my prediction. He's just too tough mentally. If Tsonga is to win, he has to do it in 3 or 4 sets.

So what do you get if you win? And what if Djokovic beats Federer?

I agree with you ... but otoh who would have thought Tips could match Fed for 5. It has been done.

We don't know how tough Tsonga is, if taken to 5.

Tsonga has not yet played the match of his life (Tips did, Kohlshrieber did). The finals could be that match.

lol...this is funny..i posted this in the other section of the forum and it got moved here even though there was nothing giving away match results that werent completed long ago,,,,in the meanwhile other stuff remains in the pro section and even the racquet section which gave away much more than this harmless thread. my suggestion that fed may go thru 08' with no slams is off to a good start

You shouldn't be making too many predictions. Especially after suggesting pro players using the Prince O port frames, have the O Ports painted on the frames.

overconfidence is your major flaw.

If you're smart you won't take the bet that Rickson has just offered you.

It's also the reason I win the vast majority of my bets. Care to wager, son?

Trust me, Cam, it's a done deal. Federer's in the finals.

Rickson a few words, overconfidence IS your major flaw and will be your downfall.

IF? BreakPoint, one must learn to walk before he can run.

Rickson, you sorta look like a fool.

Instead of truly analyzing the way the players have been playing throughout the tournament, and how they match up against each other, you simply looked at the past results of grand slams and declared that it was a done deal.

You stripped the fun out of the moment, by assuming a result and looking forward.

Now, you stand dead wrong. Where'd you go? Djokovic steamrolled into the semis easily and Federer had been playing below is normal level. I can't say the result is that big of a surprise. If you had properly analyzed the level of these players in this tournament, you would have seen Federer's losing as a distinct possibility.

No hard feelings though... WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG!
