How cold is too cold to play tennis?

Nice! (y)

I have never stayed in that area, but I‘ve vacationed in the Keys and Southwest parts many times ; some of the retired military people are amazing tennis players.

Cocoa beach is a few minutes drive from Cape Canaveral. You can see SpaceX launchs there. Very nice place and a must shorter drive to Cocoa beach from Virginia than Key West :)

There was a time when I didn‘t mind playing in colder temps, but now I am indoor only for the winter, unless I’m visiting someplace nice like you guys.
Used to play indoors. That ended 6 yrs ago. Tore serving arm rotaor cuff. Before that Covid. New mechanical valve. All this year.

We had over 200 courts till pb. Meant one net per site

That's just not right. It is not like that in Northern Virginia. Apparently, the people working for public parks and recreation are too lazy to remove the net from tennis courts. Either that or the department is flushed with cash not to be bothered to remove tennis nets from tennis courts :D

No, the nets come down after Thanksgiving. May save money leaving them up.

Played Tuesday 19:00 to 21:15 and it was cold but completely dry courts. Played today same time and it was already icy in places to start with, got progressively worse as the night went on. It's about -3 celsius here at the moment.

It all comes down to what you are used to.
I used to live on the west coast and would regularly play early morning in winter when the temp was still in the high 30's. Although by the time we were done a couple hours later it would have climbed into the low 50's.
Now I'm in Florida and playing in anything less than 60 seems criminal. Thankfully that's a consideration in all of maybe 2 or 3 days a year!
On the flip side, I would never have imagined being able to play in the afternoon in summer here, when it is high 90's, sunny, and super humid.
And yet I've acclimatized to that also and now it's no problem.
Basically, you can get used to almost anything over time.

I have decided today is too cold to play. 22F with a light breeze. Even with some sunshine. Ladder singles match ... taking the default loss. Oh well.

Played last week at night in the 40s. Unpleasant but doable. Was helpful to have a space heater to plug in and warm hands during changeover.

i can understand how some people dont want to play when its cold
Here in the SF BayArea, one group i play with start at 8am. This saturday it was 38F, we couldnt play because there was ice on the court.
some guys at my club are whimpy, instead of starting at 930, when its about 42F, they want to start at 11am so it will warm up to 48-50F.
cold weather doesnt bother me, you just have to adjust to the balls feeling like rocks and the slower pace due to the cold weather.
for me, i have to swing harder to generate any decent pace
unless its below 32F, i will play.
i might have to string my racquets at a lower tension, if the cold spell continues here in the SF Bay Area

was it -12C outside, and you were in an indoor court where it was 25C?
No, i played outside. There was snow, around the court, we shuffled the snow away, and salted some areas to remove thin ice. Outdoor carpet. Minus 12, it was during covid, but it was wonderful and sunny, loved it.

When I lived in the Northeast, I rarely played when the temps were below 50d because the outdoor nets came down in the late fall and were not reinstalled until April. I played indoors. After I moved to the Southeast, where there are few indoor courts, I was very surprised at how people would play when the temps descended into the 40s and even 30s, although 45d (in the daytime) in the Southeast feels considerably warmer than the same temp in the Northeast.

Most of the players I coach have no qualms about practicing when the temps are in the high 30s. Because I don't believe it's productive to play when it's that cold, I've implemented the "40d Rule", ie if the temp does not exceed 40d at some point in our hour, or if the "feels like" temp, incl wind, will keep it below 40d, we won't practice.

FYI minus 12 celsius is 10,4 F.....

Just played indoors this morning. Not sure what the indoor temperature was but since it is indoors there is no wind, so I felt fine wearing shorts and a t-shirt even during warmup. Outdoor temperature is 30s. Currently snowing.

The other night it was a decent 56 degrees when we stepped on court and then we had a cold front hit. Dropped to a touch under 40 degrees in like 20 minutes, but that ice cold wind...my ears and hands were frozen and sore. That was almost a bit much.

I like what you guy are debating how cold it is to play tennis. In the meantime, my wife and daughter is currently in Boca Raton FL and the temperature is in the high 70's :D

Sunny 28ºF and no wind is not bad. A couple of outings in the upper 20s really makes one appreciate temps when it finally starts floating back up to the mid 40s.

Remember playing middle winter in Mendoza in ITF seniors tournament... outdoors, close to the Andes and not pleasant. In fact, they ended canceling a seniors world champs scheduled there a bit later because courts in bad shape. Currently 28C in Cape Town, perfect summer's day.

28C is about 82.4F and it can be hot. I prefer tennis in the low 21C (70F) and sunny with light or no wind. You can find this weather in Bariloche Argentina between December and January and it is absolutely beautiful. I might head over there for two weeks after next week.

Yesterday was about 54F or so - that is about as cold as I want to play in ever. Only happens about once a year here so no biggie.

Played today at 34F with sunshine and a light wind -- it was fine. Dress for it and then it doesn't take too long to warm up enough. Biggest problem was that the winter sunshine was pretty bad when facing south because it's lower in the sky.

Our town removed all but one net on each bank of courts and refused to keep the lights on for us this year so unfortunately arctic tennis is a thing of the past for us and we have moved indoors. I will always have fond memories of playing tennis in a blizzard and drinking frozen post-match beer with my pals but I think our town is banning it.

I have heard they are even thinking of ripping out some of our courts for lighted pickle ball which would be a killer.

My wife and daughter are currently in Fort Lauderdale and it is sunny and temperature is in the low 80's today ;). It is 65 today in Northern Virginia.
