How come this happens?

This question is really old tbh. It's regarding Nadal vs Djokovic in 2013/14.

In 2013, Nadal beat Djokovic in French open and Us open. However in masters such as Monte Carlo(CLAY) and also the tour finals Djokvic beat Nadal convincingly.

In 2014, Djokovic beat Nadal at Miami and Rome(CLAY), yet lost convincingly at French open(CLAY).

My question is, why is it that Djokovic beats Nadal easily in masters etc but suffers at grand slams(in particular is open 2013 and French open 2014). Djokovic it seems like has mastered Nadal by beating him in masters but he couldn't Nadal from 2012 FO till 2015

2014 Nadal honestly had no right to win, but he pulled up his level of play considerably from anything else that season. He was hitting insane down the line forehand winners off djokovic's CC backhands and was mentally very strong. Djokovic wasn't playing that badly, but it was not the same Nadal who looked like garbage in the leadup tournaments.

2013, Djokovic took time off after Monte Carlo (He basically dislocated his ankle before the oturnament so it was miraculous he even won) and came back and started losing tournaments and never really found the same form. Nadal then proceeded to gain confidence and momentum and Djokovic just the opposite. The match was close and then he crashed into the net. Still reeling from that loss in 2013 (and his general under performance in majors since 2011 tbh) he entered the NA hc season without the same belief and confidence in his game that propelled him to wins against Nadal in the 2011-2012 stretch. That entire US Open he was unable to hit his backhand DTHL with accuracy and authority. Nadal was playing aggressive and Djokovic much too passive and the final went to Nadal rather easily after he mentally collapsed in the third set.

2013 RG SF: Both played well. Both missed some early opportunities to win but in the fifth eventually Djoker crumbled. Chalk it up as payback for the close win in AO 2012.

2013 USO F: Djokovic didn't have a full tank going into the match, due to the five set SF with Wawrinka. Nadal had an easy SF with Gasquet.

2014 RG F: Djokovic was sick prior to the final, threw up during the match.

I am not making excuses for Djokovic. Just telling how it was. Anyway, Djoker doesn't need excuses if he passes Nadal's slam record.

Go ask Murray. Beating in 3 sets is one thing and slams is another .
