i was watching the very minimal coverage of the French open today and i noticed that some pros use western grips and others use semi western. i thought most pros use semi western, but i looked like most were using western. i saw hewitt, coria, ferrero, moya, nalbandian and safin all using western grips. is it true that many players use western grips now, and who do those pros i mentioned really use western grips or did i see it wrong? the only two semi western's i saw was agassi and federer, so why do so many new pros use western forehand grips? what are some pros and cons to the western grip compared to the semi western?
thanks

Well its true that lot of clay court players uses western grips such as Coria,Ferrero, Kuerten, moya, thats what i think but im not 100% sure and i really think that nalbandian doesnt use full western he might be ussing somewhere between semi western and western, and hewitt probaly uses semi western as well i know this cause i asked his former coach jason stoltenberg at the open. Safin uses semi-western for sure. Thing with western grip is though you can get tremneds racquet head speed which will allow u to hit basically any kind of ball, lot of peole are saying that with western grip its very hard to hit a low ball but its not all that true if u have a proper technique of how to flick ur wrist u can hit those low balls very well and high balls are just perfect to hit with this grip. For semi-western you could still get fast racquet head speed but not as fast as western, semi-western hit more faltters and its more easy to master this grip than western. To really master the western grip it will take u lot of time on the court, u need very good timing and good technique to hit properly with this grip. I hope this helps

Most the players you mentioned are clay court players.. And western benefits clay players because of the slower surface.

Western allows you to handle a higher bounce from clay more effectively.

Also, clay-court tennis is based on being patient and being able to hit more shots successfully... the topspin from a Western grip gives mroe safety margin on your shots, and better angles to move the other player around.

Well – it's all relative. You should know better being from Virginia.

Sorry couldn't help it...
