How did you get over your biggest disappointments/most painful player losses as a tennis fan?

Been watching the game over the years, but the last 2 days were probably the worst for me a tennis fan. Couldn't get over Stef's 5-1 choke against Coric. This was really his chance at a big breakthrough, and he was playing calm, dominant tennis in his first 2 1/2 rounds. Then he completely throws it all away in what's gotta be the worst choke in decades. Then the insanity with Djokovic. Not only going down to PCB, but going down in the most embarrassing way possible. Of course in the end it's just a game, but suffice to say it's hard to get over not one, but 2 massive disappointments like that. I think many other hardcore fans here can relate.

How did you get your mind off your favorite player's most painful losses? What was your post-40/15 experience like for example, if you're a Fed fan?

I know exactly how you feel. I used to be like you and get very emotional with wins and losses of my favorite players.

Anyway, it all went away by the time I was 12-13yo. So hang in there, bud.

I always remember how much I will enjoy their next big win.

I try to move on to the next tournament, no point in looking back at something you can't change. Luckily, we have Rome and the FO next, so I'm just looking forward to clay.

What’s this have to do with ANYTHING?!?! Fed lost to a better player (something he eventually got over) while Djokovic lost to HIMSELF!!! There’s nothing worse than that lmao... see ya Djoko!!!!
It doesn't have to do with anything, but you automatically win any argument with the 40-15 card.

Agreed that there's nothing more embarrassing than getting defaulted. I think Nole has learned his lesson now though.

Time will tell. I personally don’t believe his tantrums will end, but he will definitely think twice before randomly launching a ball

Try to reflect on the good things that the person has already accomplished or might one day accomplish. For me Stosur losing the 2010 RG final was gut wrenching after she did all the heavy lifting knocking Henin, Serena and Jankovic but lost to Schiavone. It was brutal but then she won the USO the next year so sometimes it’s just about perspective

Roddick's loss at Wimby 2009 hurt for a little bit though I managed to put things in perspective pretty quickly; even though a Wimbledon crown would have been an amazing feather in his cap, if the biggest disappointment in his career was not being able to win a second major title on a tour where ex-players savor their shot at one final, then it's tough not to admit that he had a pretty great run.

You’re asking a good and sincere question.

This might not be the best place for it tho.

There’s a lot of “savage” in TTW.

But I know that pain and if I can think how to relate my thoughts on it in a constructive way later I will.

Realize that it's a ****ing game and that living vicariously through them as a fan is stupid. It's not like it's a thing you're born into, like being from Minnesota and pulling for the Vikings to finally win one.

Practically everyone here decided to support one of the big three because they were so successful. Like, congrats for being a fan of the GOAT, dude? Not as if you chose to support them solely for being the best in the world in the first place or anything...

I'm not a fan of any player in particular. I'm just a fan of whoever plays the best tennis and right now that just happens to be Pablo Carreno Busta.

Stop living with your parents and having them pay your bills, get a job, get a mortgage, have some kids - in short, get your own life. Amazing how growing up and having your own responsibilities will reduce your interest in living vicariously through your sports idols. It is a privilege of youth to have your lives revolve so much around sports wins and losses or care so much about celebrities.

I’m still recovering from last year’s Wimbledon. Not sorry to admit it, but I almost cried as much as Roger did.

1987 Lendl-Cash Wimbledon final.

Ivan was heavily favored to finally win there, but he played way below his usual level and Cash stunned him. The worst!

When Federer loses an important match I usually watch some 80s and 90s stuff and play myself to stay with the sport without being directly confronted to the loss itself. Then after a week or so I start watching Federer highlights again.

I don't emotionally invest in many players now. But, I am extremely happy when a player I dislike loses.
I know, sad.
