How do Federer and Djokovic perform in their 30s if you swap their birthdays?

Post-prime Djokovic faced weaker competition than post-prime Federer, but he also seems to be a bit better.

It's because success breeds confidence. Knowing you have younger ATG in your peak while you're in your twilight years alone is enough to drag your game down.

32 slam titles in 9 years is solid. I guess I didn’t realized that tennis evolved that much since then.

When did the Open Era begin? Was it in 2024?

No, because they were opposites in mental make-up: Djokovic being one of the clutchest ever whatever sports, Federer being the middling of them all. If they swap playing styles, would the result stay the same?

If Djokovic is the one 6 years older and Roger has to break through him AND Rafa "da backhand" Nadal to win slams?
Good heavens.

Federer had the new racquet and BH, it gave a lot of confidence against Nadal and everyone else, but gave him no confidence against Djokovic?

Lol, handing out 3 slam seasons like candy to kids. You guys are unstoppable.

It's certainly easy to predict outcomes knowing you won't have to face the consequences of being wrong. Everybody can to that.
You wouldn't care to tell us whether Djoker will win RG &/or Olympics then?:sneaky:

Without Federer taking out Sampras at 2001 Wimbledon, one could speculate that Pete would have kept racking up this title and at least one more US Open title.

Sampras was out of form. He won over WC Cowan (nobody ever heard of him before and since) in five in 2nd round, and lost to Federer in five in R4.

Have you ever wondered why Djokovic (and everyone else) struggled to break through Fedal ?

Simple Answer - They all lack talent compared to Federer and physicality compared to Nadal..

Djokovic however just had enough talent to combine with his physicality advantage over Fed to outlast an old Fed ....now if you reverse the scenario then Federer will be the one with age advantage + abundance of talent in his favor ....ohh yeah ...good luck to Djokovic for holding him off....aint happening

we need to stop reinventing the past

Djokovic had some moments of brilliance pre 2011 but it wasn’t until that year that he reached consistent slam winning form. Before that all kinds of players would beat him and many times he couldn’t even finish his matches. Pre 2011 Fedal wasn’t his problem, he was losing to players like Haas, and Kohlschreiber.

but after that Novak had no problem beating Nadal (obviously not all the time). Nadal was 24/25 when Novak beat him in 7 straight finals in all three surfaces and including 3 consecutive slams. So let’s stop with this “had to wait until Nadal was old” nonsense

As for Federer their ages are too far apart to directly compare. But they always had a pretty even rivalry. Fed won the first four matches against teenaged Novak but after that they went back and forth. Let’s not forget that Novak first beat Federer right after turning 20 and when Fed was 26. He first beat Fed at the AO at the same age and Fed would never beat Novak again at the AO. At the USO early Novak lost to Fed several times but Fed was 29 when Novak first beat him there and Fed, again, would never again beat him in that tournament.

Nadal was never old but Roger Federer was.

Federer turned 30 in 2011 and that is old.... an equivalent would be Novak turning 30 in 2017.... compare that, if an ATG starts winning from 2018 then you cannot say that person would beat peak versions of Novak...
Novak at 20 beat Fed at 26 because Novak is better than Federer at the AO. The win was only an indicator of things to come.

However Novak could never have beaten Federer outside that Slam because Federer's level of play is actually higher at Wimbledon and US Open even peak for peak. If they were aged same then Federer's talent would prevail over Novak and if it was Federer who is younger then he would wipe out Novak at Wimbledon and US Open since he is a better player.

Now regarding the AO, if Federer was 6 years younger then their career tragectory would follow what Federer's was in real life at wimbledon. That is a 6 year younger Federer would probably lose to Novak at AO until Novak enters the early-mid 30s and then the H2H would reverse... that means I see peak Federer defeating 2019-2020 Novak at Aus open but maybe not before that, the versions before that are probably better than Federer's best....
