A lot of Federer fanatics, including myself, seem very worried about Federer's form heading into 2018 Wimbledon.

Looking at how he did in the tournament before each of his Grand Slam wins:

2004 Australian Open - Won Tennis Masters Cup
2004 Wimbledon - Won Halle
2004 US Open - 2nd Round of Olympics Loss
2005 Wimbledon - Won Halle
2005 US Open - Won Cincinnati
2006 Australian Open - Won Doha
2006 Wimbledon - Won Halle
2006 US Open - 2nd Round of Cincinnati Loss
2007 Australian Open - Won Tennis Masters Cup
2007 Wimbledon - Finals of French Open Loss
2007 US Open - Won Cincinnati
2008 US Open - QF of Olympics Loss
2009 French Open - Won Madrid
2009 Wimbledon - Won French Open
2010 Australian Open - SF of Doha Loss
2012 Wimbledon - F of Halle Loss
2017 Australian Open - 6 month layoff, SF of Wimbledon Loss
2017 Wimbledon - Won Halle
2018 Australian Open - SF of ATP Tour Finals Loss

No cause to be that worried. He played really well in Stuttgart and didn't go all out in Halle. His Stuttgart form against Nick and Raonic is enough to win the title again, assuming he has no lapses in concentration. Admittedly, that's a big ask at nearly 37. The one guy I don't want seeing in his half of the draw is Cilic. I think he will reach the final if he's in the other half.

No worries, it's pretty obvious he wasnt giving 100% in two close grass tourneys a week before W. Last year he lost R1 Stuttgart, this time i think he got the answers he needed In Stuttgart.

Yh I think he’ll be much better at Wimbledon. But don’t you think he really wanted to win Halle. Considering he’d get his 10th crown there and it’s one of his favourite tournaments, not just a random warm up. I can’t imagine he’d purposely take his foot of the gas in Halle even though he clearly didn’t play his best.

Last year he only played one bad match (Haas) but this year he played two horrible matches (Paire and Coric).

Well i dont know. I think he probably didnt want to reach that far, although It sounds strange. I mean, he almost lost to Paireo_O. When Paire refused to win, and he was served a noone the next match, he was In the final. He always has losses like this outside slams, must be a motivation thing.

Fed fans are harsh! The guy has won the AO, Rotterdam and Stuttgart and made it to the final of IW and Halle at age 37 (soon). For what it's worth, I think he'll win Wimby but even if he doesn't, give the guy a break - 99% of players would kill for the season he's had so far even if he wins nothing else.

He clearly gave everything he got. That’s what worries me. He was basically berating himself and frustrated throughout the tournament. My guess is he was hoping he would breeze through until the SF or F and got frustrated when each match required him to expend energy and in the back of his mind he worried this would not bode well for Wimbledon. The fact that he got to the final and lost was a lousy outcome. It meant he expended the maximum possible energy and played 5 tough matches but didn’t even win the title and lost his #1 after holding it for but one week. Now even if he wins Wimby he prob won’t get the #1 back unless Nadal gets bounced in the first round or something like that. But Fed’s got a positive outlook, so As long as he’s healthy I’m sure he won’t let the disappointment of Halle affect him at all.

I think he added more pressure for himself by wanting to win title #100 at Wimbledon, so I'm glad this is out of the way, tbh. Wouldn't have wanted it to become a factor in a tense moment at Wimby.

The common denominator in Federer's last 2 slam wins is that he got lucky with the help of at least 1 or 2 byes vs injured/retiring opponents out of the 7 matches. It is an unknown quantity whether he can still get it done at slams at his age and with his level without the help of some luck with the byes.

At Wimbledon 2017 he received a first round early retirement and an injured opponent in the final, so 2 virtual byes out of the 7 matches, and at the 2018 AO he got another injured opponent/early retirement in the semi, so a virtual bye in the match preceding the final to hand him the advantage for the final. It will be interesting to see how he can do at Wimbledon this time without the help of a couple of byes from lady luck.

For me, it seems it's a bit of an advantage for Fed that he lost in Halle. He will be fresh and hungry and won't get surprised. I think his Halle loss woke him up.
