Thiem thrived most in best of 5 sets, but was more patchy with best of 3 sets. Thiem basically had the opposite problem to Zverev at the time.
Who is better? Thiem or Zverev? Thiem had a higher peak level but Zverev has many more big titles.
I'd rate him far worse than Zverev and Mevedev but also slightly worse than Delpo and even Cilic.
I would also rate him below these playes beause he has only 2 big titles (fewer than Tsitsipas) playing in a less competitive era but are Cilic and Delpo really worse than Zverev and Medvedev? Or did they just play in a more competitive era?
Thiem was challenging the big 3 in majors consistently 2017-2020 time. Zverev was struggling with best of 5 sets matches at the time.
Zverev has been a top 10 player for 10 years now, far more than the other three.
I rate Thiem above both in majors.
But 2 big titles is very low for someone with Thiem's ceiling? Even Tsitsipas has more and Hurkacz and Rublev have as many.

I think Zverev has overachieved for his peak level but has/had the tools to achieve more, he just did not work enough on his technique and strategy

The USO is a massive deal but two big titles are few for a player of his caliber considering even Tsitsipas has more.

Nah, that just shows what an unclutch choke artist he was. I'd take 1 slam, 8 Masters, and world #1 despite a physical handicap any day over a series of bridesmaid appearances.
Thiem was never going to become a second Wawrinka. That ship had sailed after losing AO 2020.
He was more like a slightly better Ferrer and it is very unlikely he was going to be a second Wawrinka but we will never be fully sure of what he might have accomplished without his injury

Could have actually defended USO 2021 had he recovered from his early 2021 slump instead of catching a wrist injury at Mallorca. Djokovic would have still faced the same CYGS pressure, and Thiem was one of the few people who knew how to play Medvedev ahead of the tour.
