How has Federer Changed?

ON this board and many others, there seems to be the idea that Fed has changed.

I was wondering what people's thoughts were on the topic, because I haven't really seen these changes and it seems to be a hot topic for some.

Mostly talk about his ego, attitude and an increase in moaning from his part, as well as the flash fashion statements on court (The bag.)

I just think these things are part of someone becoming their own person:confused:

Roger use to hit his running forehand down to up and swiping the raquet parallel to the ground and finishing the swing on his shoulder. NOw days he does the nadal flicking wrist over the head forehand for more saftly. Also he use to hit with less loppy tospin, espacially if the ball is on the midcourt. Now he spins the ball in more and goes less for the corners. I also think he serve motion has changed. It use to have more work.

Hmmmmm... O ya one major difference is that now days he doesnt take the ball as ealy as he use to. Remmaber how everybody was compareing federer and agassi for their ability to take the ball early.

He also doesn't use his slice backhand to bring in right hander in to the net or atleast set up the points for his forehand. Whenever there was a big point federer use to hit that short slice backhand to bring opponents in and that IMO was one of the major strategic reason why he dominated 2005.

ken1d,

Sounds like from your review, all of Federer's changes have been for the negative...if that were the case, he wouldn't still be winning GS's.

Also, he seems to be playing more aggressively at the USO this year. Wimbledon was disgustingly slow -- grass-like -- but the USO is very fast. He's coming into the net more, and is hitting some vicious shots at net.

I loved the Samprasesque jumping over-head smash.

yeah i noticed federer has been kinda mean to djoker, everyone is embracing him i dont see a reason why he is soo mean to him. Fed is true on accomplishment wise hes not up there because he didnt make it to a grandslam final, but the way hes playing. He needs to give him atleast some respect.

Federer had called Djokovic out in the past for his comments after his match with Nadal at FO 2006. Djokovic retired down two sets, then said in the post-match interview that he was in full control. Djokovic was known for using injury timeouts as stall tactics (a la Tommy Haas) and running his mouth. Fed did a little talking with his mouth, and a lot of talking with his racquet at the AO 2007. It seems like now that Novak has earned the right to talk, he has Fed's respect (and the respect of all other players on tour).

As for Federer changing, I think the biggest thing is the scheduling and commitment to non-Slam evens. Look at his play tonight and think of the last time you saw this level from Federer. I'd say Australian Open consistently, and the first, third and fifth sets of the Wimbledon final against Nadal. He's really starting to pace himself to peak at Slams. With his current situation, it seems to be paying off.

Very well thought post, Bigserv. Completely agree. It seems he is peaking at exactly the right time. Cincinatti was a good warm up for the USO.

He's also really begun to reinvent his personality. He shows more of it off court than a year ago, at least I think so. I think he has become more relaxed and perhaps enjoying the challenges? I have always hated him but now I am becoming a big fan of his. Plus he looks like a BAMF in all blac, :p

Yeah, Federer is more active in off-court activities this year.. but one thing that hasn't changed, he's still the dominant world no.1.

I feel the same way, 'cept I never really hated Fed; he's just jumped alot on my list.

his serve has changed. if u watch his match against Sampras, u can see that.

yes right. he doesn't do a lot of DTL passing shots any more. Instead, he does the Nadal reverse forehand to do a cross court passing.

The Fed does whatever the hell he wants. It's like ninjas: they can do a cross slash or an up and down slash.
