Even more impressive than it looks because of who he had to go up against in his career on grass. I personally rate his grass game above Novak's, who remains tops on HCs.

Up their with Connors and Edberg at the moment. Should end his career with 3 and be held in the same regard as Becker or McEnroe.

After you've laid out all the credentials I must say that the man is truly an elite player on the surface.

No doubt one of the best players to ever play on grass. Ignoring results, you only have to watch him glide around at Queens/Wimbledon to see how natural he is on the surface. Kind of like how Nadal is on clay, just a pleasure to watch. I think he'll add to his grass titles too. Queens is basically his baby and im sure he'll win 1-2 more titles there at least over the next 5 years. Another Wimbledon title is surely likely too.

Honestly I'd probably only take Federer over him if I was picking someone to play a grass court match from all the guys currently playing.

What the **** ?? Those guys played on real grass and are legendary grass court players. Out of the current players only Federer can lay claim to being a grass court player.

He might be top ten of the Open Era:

1. Sampras
2. Federer
3. Borg
4. McEnroe
5. Becker
6. Connors
7. Djokovic
8. Edberg
9. Nadal
10. Murray

I still would take Djokovic over him, but his grass court resume is certainly impressive.

Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves, no doubting Murray is compiling a very solid grass court CV, however at present there are 11 other players with at least 2 or more Open-Era Wimbledon titles...and of that 11, 6 hold 3 or more.

Agree his titles at Queens along with OG certainly have him most probably ahead of all other 2 time Wimbledon winners but still have him a long way behind a few other past and present champions.

Er...I think you'll find what grows on the lawn at Centre Court is STILL actual, real grass and actually more of it than there used to be on the near-naked courts of yesteryear. What did you think they play on these days....astroturf?? ;)

Meh... It's only because he just won Wimbledon that his resume looks great. Idk. I think he's underachieved if you look at how many gs finals he's participated in.

As usual - fourth best of the era behind Big 3.
yeah people have short term memories...peakdal>murray on grass easily. Did we forget all the times where Nadal b!tch slapped Murray around Center Court? The 08 Wimby QF performance is still maybe the best non-Federer performance on grass of the last 12 years.

His queen's record is impressive. He is the overall leader in singles titles at 5. There are no less than 7 other men who are sitting on 4 titles: Major Ritchie, Anthony Wilding, Roy Emerson, John McEnroe, Boris Becker, Lleyton Hewitt, Andy Roddick

Tired Federer in Olympic Final.
Lost to Gramperer in 2014 and Past Prime Federer in 2012.
Got Heat Stroke Tired Djokovic in 2013.
Got Raomug in 2016.

The luckiest Grass Courter in History. Shame Roddick did not win Wimbledon......

2015. Anyway agreed that Roddick should have won a Wimbledon title at least given the level he showed. IIRC he was leading absolute peak Federer (2004) a set and double break before losing a tightly competed four setter. In 2009 he defeated Murray in semifinal and pushed prime Federer in decider. Federer got lucky that Roddick missed an easy volley which would have given him 2-0 lead. Federer somehow managed to win that 16-14 in decider. Compared to that what Murray has done? He got embarrassingly routed by 34 year old Federer last year. He couldn't even handle a resurgent Federer with very limited game, he couldn't break his serve, let alone winning set(s) and giving tough fight like Roddick gave to much better version of Federer. The quality of grass court game/field has drastically fallen since Wimbledon 2012, except few great performances from Federer/Djokovic (last year), I don't see the competitiveness, drama and that level which we used to see before. I wish Roddick had been lucky enough to play in this era, against this grass field. I feel he massively underachieved especially I see Murray having two Wimbledons in his trophy cabinet.

Its a way of looking things, see Murray is one of the very good hardcourter of his era but have only one hardcourt slam ( 8 finals, faced always hardcourt legend like Novak and Fed in finals.) like Wawa , Roddick, Kafelnikov, Cilic and many more.
So if you think he overachieved at Wimbledon , then he also big time massively underachieved at hardcourt slam, you see things balanced out in the end

This is right. I don't think he underachieved at USO but at AO - yes. Five finals lost in Melbourne, won none. Just like Roddick at Wimbledon, he is unfortunate for not getting non Fedovic opponent in final.

True, although I would say that the only HC slam where he underachieved is the AO. At the USO, he is pretty much equal to Hewitt and Roddick.

I'd actually say better than Nadal.

I mean you're just looking at Nadal making 2 more finals but Murray has the Olympic Gold and had tougher draws. One of Nadal's runs to the final (2010?) was dirt easy.

he was down in 04 a double break in the second set, not ahead, before coming back that set but Fed pulled it out in the end with some clutch in play. In the third set he was up a break before the rain came and Federer came back, mostly due to his clutch play, but without the rain maybe fed could not have regrouped.

Even in the fourth Fed had to save like 6 BP before he finally broke Roddick and ended the match. Federer was below his best that match but still at a clearly higher level than 2012 so for Roddick to push him like with such a big matchup disadvantage while Djokovic and Murray were beat convincingly in the end by a Federer 8 years older and much declined is telling.

So no doubt that Roddick gave peak Fed...04-06...by far his toughest test at Wimbledon and then nearly beat him again in 09. Yet he had nothing to show for it.

Completely agree with your comment.

One of the best ever implies to me he's top-3 all time, top-5 at worst. And that's overstating his case.
But clearly, he's got an excellent grass game, he moves around well, he's got the passing shots, one of the best return games on grass and - most years - a more than adequate hold game to go with it.

No wonder Henman destroyed him and he went out in the first round next year
2002 was slowed grass and fed was obviously not himself back then. Grass sped back up in 03, Federer put on one of the most dominant wimbledons ever.

Henman destroyed him? Lol Federer was the better player for large portions of that match just got nervous in crunch time.

Trolls will troll.

except unlike Roddick he never put forward his best effort in the finals and was never particularly close to winning. Roddick did it not once but twice.

Murray has played 17 sets in AO finals...he's been bad to straight up terrible in like 10 of them.

Well said. Federer was nightmare matchup for Roddick. Compared to that Murray always had game to trouble Federer - that was right from 2006.

murray has game to trouble fed when fed is inconsistent and unfocused. Which isn't saying much because any great defender will get him off the rails. Murray's game is actually good for Federer to play against because it lets Federer consistently have the upper hand in rallies and stay in control much like against Hewitt.

I don't think Djokovic is an open era top 10 grass court player.

I was excluding Laver/Rosewall/Newcombe as they spanned the pre- and post-Open Eras.

Notwithstanding that, I don't understand your list. How is McEnroe No 1?

I think he reached a level on grass that has never been surpassed. His dismantling of Connors in 1984 was probably the greatest performance on Center court in history.
