Let’s say you are a 4.5 singles player at the high end of the range. How long a clean break from tennis will cause you to lose to a high 4.0 with a dynamic range separation of 0.5 NTRP points in your first match back? Normally USTA says you should be almost handing out a double bagel to the player who is lower than you by 0.5 rating points. You won’t get to practice beforehand and all you get is the match warmup. Is it weeks, months or years?
I think it might be a few months, but curious about other opinions. When I’ve taken long breaks, I usually have some practice sessions before playing a match and so I don’t have real-life experience. I feel like I’ll be very rusty on the serve and since I’m a serve-dependent aggressive player, the rust will be hard to overcome quickly especially in the first set. My hypothesis is that a defensive player will take longer to lose his game level.
