How long can I warm-up before doing HIIT?

I usually take a 5 minute jog before doing HIIT, but I end up suffocating half-way through. I think this is due to the fact that I go from sitting on my ass for 8 hours in school and then immediately doing intense sprints. It takes me about 20 minutes to truly get in the rhythm of running. So here's a question, would a 20 minute jog have any impact on my HIIT performance?

I have calculated that I run about 2.7 miles in 20 minutes. I don't know if that is important or not, but I'm pointing it out anyway.

SIDE NOTE:

I'd like to do a 3x/week HIIT routine, and a 3x/week burpee routine

For example

Monday - Burpees
Tuesday - HIIT
Wednesday - Burpees
Thursday - HIIT
Friday - Burpees
Saturday - HIIT
Sunday - Rest day

Would that be overkill on my body or not?

A 5 minute warmup is more than enough for me, but some people need more time to warm up which is ok. Not everyone's the same so warm up according to your needs.

Rickson, you're a knowledgeable guy. I've got a question to ask since you seem like you know HIIT quite well.

Everytime I do a HIIT session, I feel like dying. It feels like my lungs are being shredded to pieces. Granted, I don't do these consistently. I'll do HIIT twice a week, then give up from pain.

So, am I SUPPOSED to feel like bloody death after HIIT? Does it get easier the more I do it?

I'm a former personal trainer, but I don't know a lot about HIIT. Yes, your body will adjust to different workloads, but if you feel like dying, you're going too hard on yourself so slow it down.

If I do the workout listed in my first post, what effect would that have on my body? I know that people always say HIIT should be paired off with weight training on off-days. But clearly, I'm not doing that.

what is a burpee work out. hiit training does not mean intensity that you want to die.you may need to lower the # of repeats or lower SLIGHTLY the intesity so you can finish your workout. as your body adapts increase the # of repeats or # of exercises

what exercises are you doing? just saying hitt training doesnt really tell me what your doing all it says is im going really hard then resting for 30 secs. i like hitt training but you gotta make sure you get a balanced program. include weight training in there if possible if not find more body weight exercises other than burpees.
