I usually get 7-9, but find my performance suffers when I get less than 8. Anyone else like this?
Yes, I have found that I need at least 7 hours/day. If I sleep less than that, I often feel sleepy at the office between 2 or 4 PM.
When I get 8, I don't feel sleepy at all.
I try to get at least 8 hours of sleep a night. I suffer from insomnia so it's been a battle this past year to get any sleep at all. I have been prescribed ambien but I seriously can't even get out of bed in the morning if I take it. Recently I've been doing alright though, working out at night helps I think.
For me, i also need at least 7 hours. anything less than it will make me feel bad the next day.
I usually get around/just under 7 hours if i have school, If i don't it's aslong as i want

I'm in work at 7am each day so its hard unless you have a night in and hit the sack around 10ish.

when im not at school, its usually between 9 - 10 hours, when i am at school its about 8 and a half hours
I sleep about 8 on average, which is ok isn't it? But I can never wake up like most people, I always doze back off. I don't think it is because of a lack of sleep though....any remedies?

Sleep is a critical barometer of health.
A good orthopod/sports doc, upon review of evidence of complaint, will ask "... how do you sleep...?".
Sleep varies, depending on age, constitution, etc., wildly from person to person. Like diet, energy expenditure, temperament - be brutally honest know thy self best...

Hmmm, about 5-7 hours on average for me, sometimes less, sometimes more. That's all I really need though.
I used to get 6-8 hours and I would be EXAUSTED all day. Turned out I have sleep apnia. I got a cpap(breathing) machine and now if I get 4-6 hours I'm good, If I get 8+ wide awake all day

Many people find that even if they’ve gotten a good night's sleep, a quick afternoon nap of 5-10 minutes (especially after lunch) is great for boosting energy, concentration, productivity for the rest of the day. That's particularly true if you find yourself dozing off anyway. Just find a comfortable chair, put your head back and close your eyes. You might be surprised that surrounding noise isn't too bothersome. Many people would say that those few minutes of shut-eye feel almost as refreshing as several hours of night sleep.
11 PM - 7 AM
Well the quality of sleep is very important. I have 3 kids under 6 and a job that sometimes requires me to get up in the middle of the night. So even though I may get 6-7 hours/night I often have to get up 2-3 times a night. Sleeping 5 hours uninterrupted would be much better.
I sleep 5 hours on the weekend and 8 hours on the weekdays lol
I ususally get 5 to 6 hours of sleep. Except yesterday, slept at 5 AM then woke up at 6:10 AM.....damn english project
i think i heard teenagers need 10 hours of sleep a night. i usually get 9-10. i'm usually tired throughout the day if i get less than 9. i try to get to bed 10 and get up at 8.

I've been getting between 3-5 the past couple weeks. Average is probably 5.
Even though the recommended amount of sleep you should get is 8 hours, if I get that much (or more) I feel lazy to do any activity for the rest of the day. My ideal amount is 7 hours

the sleeping pill companies and anyone else who profits from their sales want people to believe they need at least X amount of hours a night. they instill fear in us to make us think that if we are short of X hours, we have a problem and are hurting our health, etc, etc.
sleep is important, but when i hear this BS about needing 9, 10, ... hours of sleep, i think this is a load. maybe i'm stereotyping, but the people i know who get that much sleep on a regular basis are gross and lazy.
This is not a load, there have been studies about this. One of my professors in college, James B. Maas, is a sleep expert. He recommends that teenagers need at least 10 hours of sleep a night. On average, most teens and college students get well below this number. It is true that as we age, we require less sleep. But the demographic that needs the most sleep is the teen/college set, who ironically, are the ones that get the least amount of sleep. Your body and mind are going through significant changes and growth at this stage, which can be aided by good sleep habits.
So much goes on during sleep that we still don't understand. But your brain does use this time to "reset" itself and use sleep as a time to re-energize. In fact the most important time in your sleep cycle is just before you wake up in a long night's sleep. Your body goes through multiple sleep cycles a night, and if I remember right, the later cycles are more beneficial than the first ones... a typical cycle is about 90 minutes (going on memory here), and the minimum amount of sleep everyone should get is 7.5 hours... less than that there are definite negative affects you can see throughout the day.
Fall asleep in meetings or lectures? Feel like taking a nap at 3 or 4? Keep hitting the snooze button? Get sleepy after a big meal? All signs of not enough sleep.
You just simply will not perform at your peak if you don't get enough sleep.
P.S. Along with Maas, Professor William Dement at Stanford is also a leader in the field of sleep research.
How you feel on any given day is the result of -at least-your 4 last night sleeps.
It doesn't make much difference if you sleep 14 on Sunday if you spend the whole week sleeping 5 hours a day..
And I know what I'm talking about..

Average probably about 5 hours. 11-6 with multiple interruptions. My sleep has sucked ever since I spent 4 months in China.

6-8 is the average. Though when I can sleep in it's more like 9-10. But the quality of sleep in the last few months....and pretty serious insomnia from time to time..it sounds better than it is. It takes me at least an hour to fall asleep.

Usually 7-8. During grandslams about 5.5.
An hour is on a good day. I can go with no sleep for a week. (Proven 2 years ago...I was collapsing from lack of sleep..but couldn't sleep when I went to bed).
Well since I'm an expert on this issue...I think you messed up your biorythm. You probably go to bed late. I was like that all my life, till the insomnia stopped being only occasional. Now I have managed to go to bed before midnight. And well, it's not working wonders (especially if I'm worried about something) but I think when I do sleep, it's better quality sleep. But I'm still a night person. I'm a zombie till noon, or 2 coffees. Whichever comes first.
i usually get 6-7 on weekdays or 9-11 on weekends.
some people are fine with only 3 or 4. they dont suffer at all. that just sounds so weird to me.
on a school nite i get around 7. but on like weekends its whenever i wake up. unless i have tennis in the morning.
7 or 8 is when I feel the best. I actually feel more alert when I'm slightly drowsy all day. When I'm too well rested, I feel sluggish. But a few nights in a row of 7 hours and I can sleep 9 or 10 easy, and then I really feel sluggish.
i am trying to get some sleep here, stop with the poll...
i usually get around 7.5-8 hours sleep, so that falls in the majority category of 6-8 hrs...
but on weekends and any day where i have nothing crucial early in the morning, its always at least 9.5-10 hours sleep....real nice
7-7.5 is about optimum for me. The problem I have is I can't sleep past 7:30-8:00am regardless of what time I go to bed, so on weekends I usually only get around 5 or 6.
High school = 6-8 hours
College = 0-7 hours
No school = 8+ hours
I am pretty worthless with less than 8. But I work fulltime at a physically demanding job, and play tennis 20 hours or so a week, so, yea I use a lot of energy.
6 is good enough but I love rolling in bed doing nothing so it can be anywhere from 6 to 10.
I get 7 on average; I always wake up at 7:00, so the amount of sleep I get really depends on whether I went to bed at 1:00 or 11:00 etc.
Lately I sleep for 9 hours and then feel lethargic the whole day.

I 'm like that exactly.The only time I went to before midnight every night for more than a week or two was when I was in the Navy.
During tournaments I always tell some lie to the guys fixing the schedule so that they put my matches at night,or else I'm toast..
