How many majors will Rog win?

11, with the 11th coming at Roland Garros next year. Then, during the awards ceremony, he will turn into a being of pure light and ascend into the sky to a chorus of 'hallelujahs' from the astonished crowd.

Amen.

I will say one thing, he can be in the same pace as Bjorn Borg if he can somehow win the U.S Open this year but it will be very difficult.

You are such the pesstimist. Roger will win the U.S Open, what Blake through at him last night was better then anything Roddick could, minus the serve, but Roger can return Roddick's serve. Roger is plenty rested, playing a 4 setter with a day and a half between that and the semis. His semi with Davydenko likely wont be that tough at all, the faster court will keep Davydenko from pushing Roger like he did in Australia and he is the one who will be more tired. Roger will be plenty fresh for the final, will be ready for the worst of the crowd after experiencing it vs Blake. He is winning this event, stop being the pesstimist.

I bet that is why you are also picking Mauresmo to win the womens, being the pesstimist.

LOL I've had the same feeling too, Grimjack!

Actually, I'm guessing 12...even though I'd love for him to break Sampras' record, there's something in me that just doesn't think it's going to happen. Intuition or cynicism: you decide!

I think it could be over 15 or more majors IF current rate continues
over 2 or more years.

There is no hope for current top players. New guys like Gasquet, Monfils
and Djokovic needs more time like 2 years or more.
By that time, Federer can hit the mark of 15 majors....

At this point it looks like there is no end in site, as for RG I think that he is close but never quite enough, Nadal would have to not show up, otherwise none!

Say Federer wins this week, that will put him on 9. Surely he can keep winning slams up to the age of 29/30. That gives him around five years to equal Sampras' record and thats at a rate of just one slam a year! I would predict that at worst he will take 2 more Wimbledon titles and then 1 of each of the rest. That would tie him with Sampras so surely he can do better.

Seriously? Do you see any end to him winning? The winning will only stop when he decides he has had enough, that is it, other wise at this rate with the competition it will go on forever!

To be honest i cant see when he is going to stop winning but i was just looking at the worst case scenario.

All this is with a big caveat - injury !! Sampras stayed relatively injury free for his career. A lot of it had to do with his hard work off-court, which is another similarity between Sampras and Fed. You never hear about their fitness and conditioning, all we heard was how Agassi runs up hills in the Vegas summer.

But Sampras was also smart. Midway thru his career he became a pure SV player to conserve energy and reduce the abuse on his body. Now Fed has without question the most graceful game of all time and expends less energy than anyone, but I think we'll start seeing him do more netplay as time goes on.

The Fed of 2001 who beat Sampras was already an accomplished volleyer and all courter, and he's regressed a little bit and stays back because of his comfort level.

Because the courts and balls have slowed overall significantly since 2001.

If the courts and balls stay the way they are, you won't see Federer serve and volley much. He might come to net more to finish the points during rallies. That's about it.

For a start I think he will beat Sampras' 14.

The French is going to be the key for him, I feel he will win 17 majors including the French at some point. Surely if he ends with credentials such as those he will be the undoubted GOAT?

Agree with 17 - maybe a few more. Still not 100% sure he'll win a French. Every year that goes by, the pressure will mount. Maybe one of these years someone will do him a favor and upset Rafa for him...

In my book, there will always be a question of GOAT Roger vs. Laver, because The Rocket was banned from playing for 7 years. Who knows what records he would have put out there? I know, I know: "if a frog had wings..."

Yep your spot on. Nobody will know quite how good Laver was because of the fact that he turned pro so wasn't allowed to take part in the majors for 7 years, he will never quite have the number of majors that are needed for people to cement him as the GOAT. Winning the Grand Slam twice is huge but he doesn't quite have the stats to make him the best.

I think Federer has a chance to win the Grand Slam, if he accomplishes that feat then I think he will be the best. He will probably of broken the record for number of slams, won all 4 of them, won the Grand Slam... not to mention the weeks that he can spend at number one.

It's all hypothetical of course but one thing guarenteed is that we are in for 5 or so years of real excitement watching the Artful Roger on his quest for greatness :)

5 or so years is a stretch. you know very soon as the young guns are ready (give a couple of years), and federer slows down and the game moves on. His era of total utter dominance is coming to an end. That is not to say that he wont be a major player in slams or win a few more (especially wimbys). so sit back relax and enjoy while it lasts. ;)

Federer will win every major played on a real surface at least 3 more times. That'll give him plenty to be the best. Roland Garros and clay in general is a different game from harcourt tennis, so he shouldn't have to win it.

haha your right, you think these guys are going to be at the top and dominant forever but it can all go wrong very quickly indeed.

The longer he can stay dominant the better, as far as i'm concerned :)

I do too. And I really want to see it. It would be interesting to see if he could win the AO, FO, and W, and go to the USO and finish the deal - the pressure would be huge. But wouldn't it be ironic if he finally won a French, then had a big letdown and got upset at Wimbledon?

lol it certainly would. I can see Federer beating Nadal in the final or RG only to have Nadal return the favour at Wimbledon ;)
