YEC is a highly specific tournament.
You can win just one match to be promoted to the semis.
You can win two matches just to be eliminated in the RR phase.
You can win just three matches (1xRR + SF + F) to get the trophy.
You can win four matches (3xRR + SF) and go home with empty hands.

Please note that Rafael needs at least four victories to grab YE#1.

What's your prediction?

Considering he looked very sharp in the Tommy Paul match for the first 2 sets (and we can disregard the 3rd Set because he vomited after), all outcomes are on the table.

Nadal and Tsitsipas almost always play thrillingly close matches, so will be pretty nervous if that ends up being the Final.... given that Tsitsipas would get the #1 ranking if he wins.
Whereas if Nadal meets somebody else in the Final, the pressure will be off, because Nadal will have got the #1 ranking already (if he went 3-0 in the RR).

I believe in this scenario:

3 (RR 1-2, SF win, wins the title)

Nadal would also be YE no. 1. He’d get 200 points for the round-robin win, 400 for the semi, and 500 for the final = 1,100 points. Enough to pass Carlos.

I dont.
I think he will win 1 match.

His game suits hardcourts now more than ever, so makes sense that he wins the AO and ATP Finals this year.
The only thing holding him back at the US Open was a torn stomach.
Who knows, he may sweep this ATP Finals and win next year's AO too.

Tiny difference, right?

God, if he doesn’t make the final after the cream puff group he has been put in that clearly establishes once more his clay skewed and opportunistic HC career

It's even more messy when you consider this rule:
Standings are determined by: 1. number of wins; 2. number of matches played; 3. in two-players-ties, head-to-head records

Let's assume these results:

FAA def. Ruud
Nadal def. Fritz
Fritz withdraws, Rune to play in his place
Rune def. Ruud
FAA def. Nadal
Nadal def. Ruud
Rune def. FAA

Then:
1. FAA 2-1
2. Nadal 2-1
3. Rune 2-0 eliminated
4. Ruud 0-3 eliminated

You can be unbeaten, you can defeat your opponent, but eventually you will be eliminated and your opponent will advance just because he played one more lost match.

Will lose to Fritz tomorrow, then beat FFA and Ruud to advance to SF. Loses then against Medvedev/Tsitsipas in SF and we will have Med/Tsits vs Djoko final.

It's a good start. But considering how he looked, I'm concerned for his chances against FFA.

LMAO He would be lucky to beat EITHER one between Ruud and FAA now in this shape! I mean like getting breadsticked by Fritz of all people in a straight sets defeat?! Really?!...

His last 2 matches have been worryingly bad even for indoors hard and the time of season, even adjusting for age.

I chose that Rafa would not win a match here, and so far I have been right. He has been in terrible form since summer, and playing an indoor hardcourt tournament late in the year is not going to help matters any. Not sure what is wrong with him, but he looks downright horrible out there.

Nadal can still advance to semi finals but ofc difficult match coming up against Felix. Again big server huge forehand. Nadal looked much better than paris. His serve was good and forehand was okay even good aswell for the indoor standarts. Movement was okay too. Problem was his returns and backhand specially. Backhand was awful. Most disappointing thing was even when Fritz on second serve Nadal didn't win any points.
Yeah it sucks to lose and not advancing but considering this is the 2nd match since USO its understandable and i'm hopefull for next year.

These conditions favour and rewards to the offensive players. So probably it will be more about Felix hitting winners or UE. Here probably somebody like Medvedev is easier to face than Fritz or Felix for Nadal. If Nadal somehow beats Felix which is big task with that confidence he can beat Ruud aswell and advance. Obviously he needs to improve returns and backhand to have a chance. Regardless of anything its a great season and even if Nadal loses 3 matches it will have zero negative effects for the next season.

And how did Ruud beat FAA if the Canadian has a more offensive mindset than the Norwegian?

Not the ideal start, but he is still very much in it, just treat it as any standard tournament from here on out.

Because he made so many UE. Difference was Fritz didn't miss that much. And Ruud is not bad player like many here seems to think. But easier opponent for Nadal i think.
