How many more Slams will Rafa win?

How many slams do you think Nadal will win before he retires?

My predictions are as follows:

4 Roland Garros
2 Wimbledon
2 Hard court

I have no idea, but the player who emerged in New York could potentially end up rattling off quite a few straight. If he takes Australia, it's hard telling where it might end.

I honestly think next year is the year Nadal will complete the Calendar Slam now. I think it will be his only one and his streak will end at the 2012 Australian Open but it will end at 7 straight slams. I think he will gradually see his dominance fade after that but his final career tally might be something like:

3 Australian Opens (2 more)
8 French Opens (3 more)
5 Wimbledons (3 more)
2 U.S Opens (1 more)

So about 18 slams. How that compares to Federer's final tally is a guess at this point.

It's really tough to tell, because he's relatively young and, for now, healthy, but, it NEVER is as simple as extrapolating future results based on his most recent great results. There are always unexpected hurdles, weird losses, etc. When Fed was at his most dominant, there looked like there would be absolutely no slow down, people were predicting he would easily end up at 20+ Slams. But, tennis career arcs shift quickly.

That said, Rafa will obviously win more. At a minimum, and I know many people, will think I'm crazy for setting such a low limit, he'll win only 3 more Slams. I personally predict 5-7. And, like Fed, if we simply base it on his prime form and his current results, he could win 8+ more, though I wouldn't expect it.

The Rafa era is here. This may sound stupid, but his greatness completely sneaked up on me. Once he got to 6 Slams, he was a "great" like Edberg or Becker. But, Fed was far ahead, guys could beat Rafa, on occasion, by hitting through him (Tsonga, Del Potro), and it really looked like he would be unable to win the USO, there were real questions about his body and his injuries (which I'm sure will resurface sometime in the future to some degree), he couldn't defend his Wimbledon title.

But, he got fit, made a few alterations to his game, and suddenly after a period of 4 months is at 9!! Slams, with a career Slam. Whether he ever is considered the GOAT by a majority of people is yet to be determined, but just consider where he's at. It's pretty amazing. 9 Slams. If his career ended today, he'd arguably be Top 5 of all time.

Strangely, the old slam record of 14 looks like it's going to get smoked again in a couple of years...I'd say he wins 8 more, using current trends.

Open Era only...he'd be top 5, clearly. 9 slams is more than anyone in the Open Era except Federer, Sampras, Laver, and Borg. And he has the career slam. So there is no doubt he is top 5 of all time. There isn't an argument for him as the greatest, however. (and I really don't think there is a good one for Borg either).

If he wins the AO in 2011, unfortunately (b/c of Nad-**** diminishment of Federer), I'll have to say there is already an argument for him as the greatest. Winning the AO in 2011 would be just as impressive as Laver's CYGS, because it would still be 4 slams in a row, and there is no off-season in tennis.

PS: This thread is typical of the arrogance of Nadal-****s. Rather than focusing on what is immediately possible and even has a good shot of happening -- the non-calendar year GS -- they're acting like it is inevitable that he is going to win 5, 6, 7, 8 more grand slams.

If I were a Nadal fan and he won the AO next year, but never won another slam after (like how Laver never won a slam again after completing his 2nd GS), I'd already be plenty happy enough, because there is an argument that he's the greatest ever.

I dunno, but I think this is not his last USO. They asked him at the presser, what his goal is now, he said it was just to keep improving his game, and to be a better player next year than he was this year. People said he reached the final too easy, but i'm certain he'll reach the finals again next year if not win again. Hope he wins plenty more!

I'm really not a Nadal-****, at all. And, I don't think 5-7 more Slams is inevitable at all, just that it is possible. Like I said, people extrapolate future results based on current form and current "pace" of winning, but unexpected things ALWAYS happen. If Nadal is going to get up near Sampras or Fed level in Slams, he's going to have to do the bulk of the winning NOW, 2011 and 2012. Things become even more unpredictable as players age.

8-11 more, so he will end up with 17-20.

That is unless:
1) He starts getting injured again.
2) Murray steps up
3) Some other tall bomber (Del potro, soderling etc..) steps up.

If Nadal stays healthy he'll end up with 18-20 slams total, and will be the undisputable GOAT. I think Federer will get 1-2 more slams, and that's only if he's lucky enough to not face Nadal.

I think 2 more is extremely likely in the next 2 years. One French, and one hard.

I can easily see two more French, one Wimbledon, one Aussie, and one more U.S. Open by the time he retires.

AO: maybe 1 more
RG: 2-3 more (maybe 4 if no one stops him)
W: 2 more
USO: maybe 1 more if he keeps improving like he has

so between 4-8 more, ending up with 13-17 slams total.

i think his last slam will be at RG though, sort of like a full circle kind of thing.

Man, after seeing him win tonight the sky's the limit. I am no longer putting limits on this man. But I'll throw a number in there and say 5-6 more slams. 2-3 FO, 2 W and 1 hardcourt slam. He has a very realistic chance at passing Sampras' total mark.

4 FO, 3 Wimbledon, 2 AO, and 2 USO. For a grand total of 20 slams. He will accomplish the true Calendar Slam in 2011, and he will achieve the record for maximum number of consecutive slam matches won, losing his first slam match in the AO 2012 semifinal. And I base this on absolutely nothing.

Nadal just won the USO only dropping one set. If he is wining this easily the injuries will likely stay away making 17 or 18 doable. Not easy or likely but doable. Winning at least 3 next year will be crucial though.
