How many pairs of socks do you wear when you play?

I generally wear one pair of socks when I play, which was fine with my old pair of Wilson shoes.

I got a pair of Barricade 4's yesterday and they fit really well, but my heel slides up and down a bit in back, so my coach suggested wearing two pairs of socks when I play. He wears two pairs as well.

Today I was watching the Federer/Nadal final in Germany and I noticed Federer was wearing two pairs of socks as well, so I was curious how many of you out there wear two pairs of socks as well.

Thanks for any input.

Many pro's wear 2 pairs of socks to prevent blisters. I know Roddick does for sure....

I wear 2 pairs as well to prevent blisters...

There are a few companies out there who make socks with 2 independent layers, they are usually marketed for runners, but work just as well for any other sport

i wear one pair as well, sometimes two if i'm left with two old pairs of socks and they are old....

i remember years ago, perhaps in the sampras-hewitt 2000 us open semifinal, that hewitt wears three pairs of socks....or at least he did at that time

7 pairs on clay, 6 for grass... knitted with pacific naturalgut 17gauge. Seriously, one thin pair of runningsocks, one pair of normal cheap tennissocks on top of that.

Excuse my ignorance, but what's the rationale for wearing more than one pair of socks. If the answer is 'comfort', shouldn't you rather be wearing thicker socks (Thorlo, Lorpen) or different shoes?

For the doublers, ever have problems with one pair slipping down into the toes of your shoes? This used to happen, creasing under my feet causing one serious blister/cut. Stick with just one pair now.

Two pairs, for a number of reasons.

(1) Rod Laver recommends it
(2) I have narrow feet; makes the fit better
(3) minimizes foot chafing/ blisters
(4) added cushioning

Just one pair. If I have to wear more than one, that means that my shoes are bigger than they should.

This is the main reason that prevents me from wearing more than one pair of socks. The best idea I can think of for those who want more cushion/fit is to just purchase thicker socks, than slapping on two pairs. Thorlos provides socks that come in thin, moderate and thick cushioning, depending on what would fit your feet/shoes best.

I wear two pairs. One pair of just Nike Mid Cut racquet socks, and then one pair of sock liners underneath.

I bought them for backpacking, and decided to try them out for tennis because I got sick of getting blisters everytime I stopped playing for awhile and they work great.

(mine arent quite as fancy as these, but same idea)

The point is they are very thin and they breath well. There is no way I could wear two pairs of regular old tennis socks because my feet would be very uncomfortable in my shoes then.
