How many pairs of tennis shoes do you own?

Right now I own four pairs of Nikes: Air Max Smash, Air Zoom Oscillate, Air Max Breathe Free III, and Air Max Breathe Cage. I like the Cages the best because they feel like my favorite of all time the Breathe Free II's.

I had 20 pair of BF II but am down to 6, so I just bought 4 more pair of Court Mo GTs. They are my Hardcourt shoes. I wear Animos on clay, and have 5 pair of them.

Hardcourt shoes last me about 5 weeks.

Yes, this is AZ Mills. The price I mentioned was after the 20% discount coupon they sent me in the mail, so you can do the math.

I went back today to exchange some shirts for a larger size and noticed they only had 1 pair of BFII men size 8.5 left on the odds/ends racks, that's all. But they have plenty of Air Vapor 4 and Air Zoom Revive and another (forgot the name) on the regular racks.

.

Thanks for the heads up. They ended up having two pairs of BF IIs left in my size (not 8.5) and I bought both of them. Major score at $40 a piece :D I didn't see any Vapor IVs but only vapors IIIs - which I think are too poorly cushioned. The others were the revives which I also think were junk, and the Animos which I don't know too much about.

Animos are the best clay shoes I have ever owned, fit a touch wider than the breathes, and maybe a hair shorter. The ankles are high in them which kind of digs into me because I have abnormally low ankles for a guy.

Otherwise a great shoe.

So you also had this 20% off coupon? (Aren't they normally $49.99?)

Hmmm...I wonder how come I never get these coupons in the mail and I shop at the Nike Factory Store all the time. :-(

Well it was a Labor day deal and may be Outlet specific? I would have never looked for it in the mail unless I read this thread because I usually throw out advertisements.

Thanks. I guess I missed it. Didn't know about a Labor Day sale there. :-(

They actually had a ton of stuff on sale. 40% off the tagged price plus 20% coupon on a lot of the clothes. I just got the shoes though because I just realized my tennis clothing collection is getting somewhat close in size to my regular clothes collection and that is just not right.

Glad to hear you found a couple of BFIIs for yourself, Goober. Last time I was there I didn't see any BFIIs left except the 8.5, so they must have brought more out later.

I don't know how it really works. I bought the only pair of BFII my size that I saw a couple of months ago (with another 20% off coupon on only 1 item), then last week I saw 4 more pairs of my size. So they definitely must be putting them out gradually. I'm not sure if they were doling them out slowly on purpose, or if they were just simply putting them out as they came in.

I think you're right, those others were the Vapor 3, not 4. I mispoke.

If you think the men's BFIIs were a major score at $40, the women's BF3 were even better at only $32 (marked $50 but rang up $40 then less 20% on top). And this is on the regular rack with plenty in stock.

Yeah, my son and I went crazy on the clothings, too. For less than $10 a shirt, we couldn't pass them up. Got a couple of Nike featherlight summer hats, too, for under $10.

I think we're set for a long while. :D

Wow! Now I'm really upset that I missed out on this sale. ;)

20% off coupon on top of 40% off the ticketed price, which is usually already at least 50% off the MSRP, and we're talking about a total of 76% off the MSRP!! :-o Yowza!!!

FYI, last week when I was at the store, they had a ton of these 10% off your purchase of $50 or more 9/14-9/30 coupons lying around at the cashier's desk at the AZ Mills Nike Factory outlet. Not as sweet as the 20% coupons, but still useful if you come back and find something new you didn't see before. Anything to get you to come back...

Wow, number of shoes mentioned by many above is impressive. I suppose all thouse playing tennis pretty seriously. Myself, as a humble amateur, using two pairs, one for clay, other for other surfaces (hard, art. grass, carpet), both are barricades4 lately, and one more pair in box. Usually buying next spare pair of shoes on sales. "Normal" prices for decent shoes are crazy in place I live, around 150 EUR

we are all humble amateurs here. :D

There are a lot cheap high level shoes here in the USA or else I would never have so many shoes. 150 Euro= $207! Yikes that is a lot of money for tennis shoes.

I have 2 pair of adidas Tirands in different colours, a pair of Japanese Nike fitness light shoes, and a pair of Japanese Reebok fitness lites aswell as a pair of Puma's..

I used to be just exclusively Nike, but now I am enjoying other brands..

Chris, what is the difference between Japanese sneakers?

I ask because it seems like you made a distinction.

I'm rotating 2 pairs of NB 802s, and I've got another pair waiting. I bought the third pair only because of the great price I found.
I wouldn't advise stocking up on more shoes than you can use in a couple years. Eventually, the cushioning will break down, and the shoe will literally fall apart when you try to run/turn/stop.
Still, it's a good idea to rotate multiple pairs, especially if you play a lot. It allows the cushioning in the show more time to "bounce back" from the pounding it took. And more time to dry out, for those of us who sweat. I've read on a runner's forum that 2 pairs in rotation will last as long as 3 pairs worn in succession. I would expect that tennis shoes would also last longer when rotated.

Really? A 24 hour period is not enough for dry out and "bounce back"? What's the optimum time for bounce back then? What if you play 3 or 4 times a week for 1.5 hour each time, which gives you an average of 2 days in between play? Is this long enough for optimum bounce back? What about 3 pair rotation? Is it linearly better than 2 pair rotation? Or is there a point of diminishing return where it makes little difference between 2 pair or 3 pair rotation?

I always thought the main reason for rotation is to have 'broken in' shoes ready in case one pair goes bad. Or to use the more durable pair for practice and save the more comfortable pair for matches.

So thanks for pointing this out. What you said make sense, but I'm curious on whether it makes that much difference for my frequency of play of 1.5 hours each time for 3 to 4 times a week.

I'm also surprised to hear that the cushioning will start to break down after a couple of years. Even if you keep them in the original box in a cool, dry place like your closet? I can understand if we're talking about 5 or 10 years. But a couple of years is a pretty short duration in my opinion for break down to occur that soon.

Is this something you hear from the shoe manufacturers or is it something you hear from other posters who ran into the situation?

I should have added the "your mileage may vary" disclaimer.
For me, 24 hours isn't sufficient to dry out my shoes - I sweat a lot. As for the cushioning bouncing back, what I heard was probably in regard to folks who run every day. Playing 3-4 times a week, maybe you'll be okay on one pair. Maybe you'd never notice the difference, or there really wouldn't even be a difference.

And as for the long-term breakdown, I was referring more to the "I love this shoe, so I bought 18 pairs when they were discontinued" idea. Two years is likely no problem at all - although just because you bought shoes brand-new doesn't mean they aren't already a year old or more, depending on what you buy. I tend to buy shoes that are discontinued already, so I can't store 'em as long as somebody who bought the newest color of Barricade IV or whatever. I do know that, in 5-10 years, these things will crumble like dirt. So how much cushioning are they giving me at 3-4 years? That's what scares me off.

Same for me, this is the main reason for me to have more than one pair of shoes.

About having shoes without using for long a period, with the time the glue used to manufacture the shoes doesnt work anymore and the sole falls apart, so i think it is not a good idea to do that.

the NB was $12.00. The same exact shoe TW had on sale for 49.99. the nike was $24.99.

A gadzillion fafillion thanks. No longer have a local Marshalls, about 45 minute drive to one now up north in Ann Arbor. May be worth the drive except during a home game.
