How many slam-winning years do you think Nadal will have left when he hits 14 slams?

Not really. The OP question includes the idea of Nadal having 14 slams, which means, that he should have won by that point in time 56 + his current 10 Majors. That puts him at 66 Majors, which is not, by any stretch of imagination, unrealistic.

:)

No, definitely not unrealistic. After all, who's going to win the FO other than Nadal anyway? No one for the next 50 years at the very least. So that's 50 slams heading his way. Then you have Wimbledon - once again, who's going to win Wimbledon other than Nadal for the next 20 years? So we are already at 70 majors, and we haven't even gotten to the US Open / Australian Open yet. So clearly the OP wants to talk down Nadal's achievements, probably because he's a closeted ******* or something.

Vamos!

No no, by slams OP of course meant Grand Slams which mean four majors each, not the watered down current usage. So multiply 14 by 4 (I don't have my calculator nearby so...).

It's 56, Senti. See my other note on why this is a huge underestimate.

Nadal only won ONE slam in 2009, then won 3 slams in a row in 2010. Nadal only won ONE slam in 2011, about to win 3 slams in a row in 2012? Seems like he needs an "off-year" to get motivated. He looks more motivated now than ever, and is playing twice as well this year than he was last year on clay. Also had his 2nd best Australian Open ever, this year. Don't be surprised if he's going for THE RAFA SLAM at the Australian Open next year.

How come Nadal won only one slam in 05, 06, and 07? Shouldn't it have been 1, 3, 1 by your logic?

Nadal has zero chance against Fed at Wimby or USO.

wow that's one hell of a statement given that the last W final they played Nadal won and Nadal won both matches they played on hard court. Fed has a much better chance vs Nadal in a best of 3 than a best of 5. Their history illustrates that too. Only 2 out of the 10 Fed victories vs Rafa were slam matches. (+ the Miami final in 2005, that's 3 5 setters out of 10 victories).

The funniest thing is the implication from this clueless poster seems to be Nadal is getting alot worse, like Federer has only been getting better since 2008 and early 2009 when Nadal was already now beating him in all the non clay Slam meetings, LOL!

Fed and Rafa are 3-3 in non-clay best of 5 matches.

Rafa got lucky in 2008 (mono) and AO may as well be played in Paris. He won't beat fed at wimby or USO. Sorry.

Sure, the clock doesn't tick in favor of Fed as he hits his thirties, which is why their second AO match was less disputed than their first.
At RG, it's kind of a status quo. Bar 2008, Fed gets a set and Rafa runs away with the rest. Do they have their routine or what? They're just like an old couple now :)

What a weird logic. And the 3 Fed won were from 2005 to 2007. Rafa won the last 3. The only 5 setter on hard Fed won is when Rafa was a kid (BEFORE his 1st master breakthrough) and NOT a slam win while Rafa won 2 slam matches vs Fed on hard. How does that qualify as luck? I'm not saying Fed has 0 chance by the way but he sure wouldn't be the favorite at this point (it seems complicated enough for Fed right now to just GET to the point where he would meet Rafa).

Have to agree with this. Hope Fed turns it around though.

So if Nadal wins 2 slams this year, the logical Channel slam, that would make it 12. Just to be fair to the fanbases I'm going to give Fedjokovic the benefit of the doubt and assume they can win the US Open and Australian Open (even though it just took Djokovic 6 hours to beat Nadal at the AO). So let's say Nadal has 14 slams by the end of 2013. How many years of slam contention do you think Nadal would have after 2013?
212076623.jpg

Just enough to make you feel superior.

But then again, perhaps Federer will win a few more slams and spoils the party.

BTW, funny choice of pic.

If you watch the Miami 2005 match again, you'll notice that Rafa's backhand, movement, and passing shots were all much better in 2005 than they are now. Especially his backhand. He won 89% of his matches that year and won 2 hard court masters titles; something that he hasn't managed to repeat since (he has 5 career total). I'd argue that Rafa was a better player in 2005 than he is now.

Fed is just as good indoor and he's definitely in the mix in best of 3 events. If you haven't noticed he's regressed a notch in best of 5 (understandably at that age), you haven't been paying attention (especially on grass).
I wouldn't be surprised if he had a slam left in him though but it won't happen if he has to go through Rafa imo. It will happen in the same circumstances as the ones that gave him his last 3 slams (RG, W 2009 and AO 2010) = he will need Rafa to be out of his way and at this point on hard court, he will probably need Djoko to be out of his way too.

Federer cant even beat Berdych and Tsonga at Wimbledon anymore. If he plays Nadal there with his current sh1tty grass court game he will get mauled. *******s should be thankful Federer isnt good enough on grass to ever reach Nadal at Wimbledon again probably, as his career winning grass H2H will be gone forever if he does. U.S Open they might have an ok match, with Nadal probably still winning in 4 sets.

Rafa had great results on hard in 2005: he won 3 events: 2 masters and 1 250 (Canada, Madrid, and Beijing) but in slams he's been WAY better between 2008 and 2012 especially on hard. Beijing had very low competition and Madrid was a miraculous win that cost him his foot. Olympics was 2008, AO win was 2009 and USO win was 2010, all his biggest hard court wins were after 2007.

Someone forgot to take his midol today.

The fact is that Federer is playing better now than he was in 2010 and most of 2011. If you think he'd lose to Tsonga or Berdych at Wimby again you're delusional.

I would agree with this too, that he probably wouldn't lose to those guys again. Even against Djokovic Fed might not lose on any surface, except maybe AO. But, against Nadal? It's all mental. He'll fold as per usual. Just watch his body language. IMO, only one man can really stop him at slams, and that's Nadal.

If Nadal just grab two this year (French and Wimbledon at least) that puts him in a good position to catch 16.. That is if Fed doesn't manage to win anymore

I'm pretty sure Rafa will win more slams, not clear how many more but I hope he'll get to 12 at least. He should be able to pass Borg.

I have to agree with this.

Me too. Fed is over 30 and is still playing great tennis. Nadal is only 25 yet he isn't playing nearly as well as Fed is. It's like Fed never ages or something. It's bizarre how well Fed's form has held up over the years.

Come on DFTW, you know that's not true. Djoker can take the fight to Fed on any surface. I know Fed had match points on their past two meetings at the USO, but Djoker still won.

I think we'll see a change in the future.

both Fed and Nadal have declined from their peak years, but I think that Nadal's is more significant to the matchup.

Nadal's declining backhand gives Roger something to break down and his declining movement makes it harder for him to run around his backhand and loop a forehand to Roger's backhand.

Roger does seem to fold mentally once his backhand starts breaking down. But I don't see that happening anymore, except on clay and very slow high bouncing courts like AO.

Even during their peak years, when Nadal was a bigger matchup problem and all of the pressure was on Fed, Fed still managed a winning record against Nadal outside of clay courts.

I said 'might'! I'm not saying Fed WOULD win. But Fed proved to me last year from the FO and USO that even at this age, he has what it takes to hang with Djoker even when Djoker is in slam winning mode, despite Djoker winning the USO. Conversely, it's very different for Fed against Nadal, almost impossible to take it to a 5th set now.

Nadal does not have what it takes against Djoker, at least that was true prior to AO2012.

Yup, all very true.

p.s. for the idiots who come in and say, 'but clay is a surface too!', just because you quote a record outside of clay does not mean clay is not a surface, it simply means that clay is resigned as Nadal reigns unequivocally superior there.

I would normally agree with you because Federer has declined a lot and is not as good on grass or any surface for that matter as he was in his prime(with the exception of clay perhaps) BUT, he has played better in the last 6 months than he has since the 2010 AO with more focus. He is on a mission this year to go all out and try and win what he can, that is very obvious. Whether he can pull it off or not remains to be seen, but I would not count Fed out this year.

His effort against Nadal at AO didn't show that Federer really wanted to win at all costs. He seemed rather lackadaisical and had no real fight. Often just slumping his shoulders and not showing the kind of fight necessary to win a big match.

You only have yourself to blame, not putting me on your ignore list. The thing I do that almost nobody else does, is I talk about tennis. Nobody else is focusing on tennis. Everybody else is focusing on other posters. If you aren't mature enough to post about tennis on a tennis forum, then use your ignore list function. And don't put "Nadal fans" in one group. There are just as many bad Nadal posters as there are Federer posters and Djokovic posters. There are many, many Nadal posters I don't like - Clarky21 for example. TennisFan3 for example. And vernonbc the other day, can't stand the attitude.

Anyway, back to tennis: The signs we need to look out for with Nadal and his longevity is any drop-off on clay from year to year, because Roland Garros is the slam that will drive him to Federer's 16 slam record. All signs this year point to 2012 being perhaps Nadal's best year ever on clay, according to the current form he is showing. An undefeated run, ala 2010, looks likely at this point. Nadal looked so timid last year on clay. Completely opposite this year.

I don't put anybody on ignore. I am not on here enough and don't take it that seriously, it is only a tennis forum after all. You tend to make very outlandish predictions about Nadal that are unrealistic and even some of the more nutty obsessive Nadal fans tend to think so. In any case, whatever.

Re Nadal, I think he will likely win around 13-14 slams total but this is tennis where things change all the time and as soon as you think one thing will happen, something else does.

I guess we will see. The last couple years he looked awful on grass, similar or even worse for him to how Nadal looked on clay last year. Still even if there is more reason for hope or promise for Federer on grass this year, you still have to admit to say Nadal CANT ever beat Federer at Wimbledon or the U.S Open at this point is a proposterous statement. I think someone is in a time warp and thinks this is 2005 or 2006.

I would never say that. As long as Nadal is still breathing, he is capable of defeating Federer on any surface.

I have offered that to your fellow Nadal fan (NSK, but he refused to accept it  ), and I will do the same to you. If Federer meets Tsonga/Berdych at SW19 this year, and beats them (one of them) you will not post again until after the US Open 2012. If he loses, I will do the same. Put your money where your mouth is. OK?

As for the rest of your post - Federer is 30. His movement is worse than it was, so no shame in the fact, that he has worse chances against 25 years old Nadal (at his prime). But, rest assured, it will not be as straightforward affair as you think it will be, should they meet at SW19. I still think, that on one particular day Federer could play nearly perfect tennis, and if that happens against Nadal, it is quite possible that he wins. I am quite curious what will happen at Wimbledon this year, and actually want to see a semi or a final between those two.

It makes me laugh, when people constantly bring h2h in their discussions. Let it go, people, it will not make your favourite player better.

I definitely agree with NadalAgassi on one thing, Fed's level on grass was pretty terrible last 2 years, I honestly think people who are expecting him to win another Wimbledon are living in the past.

As strange as it sounds, grass is Fed's worst surface now, he has far more chance of winning even another FO than another Wimbledon.

But another Wimbledon is what he wants the most so if he gears himself up for that goal in his twilight years, you never know what a great champion can do.

Ehm Nadal won a slam last year, is currently on a streak of 4 slam finals in a row and was extremely close to winning the only slam played this year so far (not to mention that he beat Fed at their one slam meeting this year), is ranked higher than Fed at the moment etc. There's no comparison, Nadal is flat out playing much better tennis than Fed at the moment.

And yes Fed does age and his form hasn't held up all that well as evidenced by the fact that he went 2 years without winning a slam, for a guy who was winning slams left and right in his heyday that's quite telling.

But another Wimbledon is what he wants the most so if he gears himself up for that goal in his twilight years, you never know what a great champion can do.

He can gear up, oil up etc. as much he wants he's definitely not winning another Wimbledon unless his grass game picks up massively.

Don't you think Sampras wanted another Wimbledon more than anything else before his career was done? Yet he got his last slam at USO, where he reached 3 slam finals in a row in 2000-2002 period and his last match at Wimbledon was a loss to freakin Bastl.

News to idiot *******, I am not the one who started this whole topic or the subject of the Federer-Nadal matchup altogether by making a ridiculous and unfounded statement (aka Nadal has to avoid Federer at Wimbledon or the U.S Open, Nadal has no chance to ever beat Federer at Wimbledon or the U.S Open again). Speak to your fellow **** who started on the subject if you have a problem.

The difference is Sampras' head was already out of the game of tennis for quite a while and Federer seems to still love the game. Who knows what will happen, we will have to wait and see. A few months ago I was saying Federer won't win another slam but I think he will likely win one more because his desire still seems to be there and he seems to be making a final big push this year. It won't be easy that is for sure.

I do not have a problem (as seen by my position on the subject) whereas you obviously use the same logic, that you claim to be wrong. Oh, and you did not put your money, where your mouth is.

What, you dont think Nadal has time left?? Each and every year people say that he is not going to stay at his current physical level now and yet each year he is fitter than ever

Wow. This one cracked me up, coming from a dupe account. Good one, Sir!

Ok, if you do know a lot about tennis then you obviously did watch Nadal's current GS finals. Plz tell me if you have watched him being physically broken down in ANY of these matches...

Their 2012 AO match was less disputed because they made the courts even more slow and high bouncing. The reality is that Fed is just as good as he was a few years ago and Nadal is a lot worse.

Hahahaha, this post reminds me of myself. I also said last year that Fed is as good as ever, but the fact is that he really isnt. If you watch his previous matches and compare them with his level right now, he has dropped slightly, you have to admit that. Sure, he can play the slams at the very high level but other than that he isnt as consistent as before. He cant sustain that high level of tennis now...
What makes you think Nadal is a lot worse?? Just because he is losing so you assume that he is playing bad. Did you ever stop to think that maybe Nole has improved to an extent where even Nadal's best wasnt enough. Nadal reached the most no of finals in 2011 and was very consistent. It was just Nole who made it look like he played crap which was not true. Look at the USO'11 final. Nadal was playing at an incredible level. He was unfortunate to be playing against an opponent like Nole, who is Nadal's antidote, plus that surface just did not suit Nadal's game. Not making excuses but the fact is Nadal was just beaten by a better player. Though yes, Nadal played a crap RG and Wimby last yr. That was just a time when he was out of form...

Nadal USO 2011 fought so hard in that 3rd set just to survive, he was spent in the 4th set and couldn't even return WTA level serving from Djokovic.

Yes, but that was a BRUTAL match, probably one of the most brutal matches ever even though they played for only 4 sets. Plus I really dont think that if Nadal was 2 years older, he would have played better in the 4th set.
The real reason for Nadal not returning those serves was mainly because Nole really started hitting the outer parts of the lines on his serves and Nadal was expecting much faster serves. He was thrown off his rhythm. Plus the real indication of Nadal being tired was when he stopped chasing balls that he chased in the 3rd set. Nadal being physically tired had nothing to do with him returning poorly.

First thing is first, Nadal needs to start winning slams again. He has started winning tournaments again, and has started defeating Novak again. The masters coming up will be rather telling IMO on the later part.

If he can start trending titles wins and wins against Novak, then you have something to start discussing. Finally, if he can bring home the FO title again which I don't think Novak will let happen. Then you have a complete and total change of trend.

Even then Nadal will need to win a slam outside of the FO to start getting to that 14 number you are talking about. If Novak starts to fall apart, which we have seen since the start of this year, then Nadal out look is extremely positive. He could be to 14+ far faster than we could ever imagine.

Completely irrelevant to thread, but I saw your avatar, then looked up a vid of the 2001 quarter between sampras and agassi, then tried out full on S and V in a match today, and had more success than i thought possible with that style for me.

Go figure. lol

No. He will play to 30 no Prob IMO.

Nice. That photo was Aussie Open 2000.
Ill argue S&V would be successful now contrary to popular belief.
Would be sweet if the tour made the original Sampras prostaff 90 its racket.
We would find out just who has the best skills.

I didn't say he was as good as ever. I said he's as good as he was a few years ago. ie in 2009. His level now isn't even close to what it was from 2005-2006.

Nadal has declined because his movement and backhand are worse than they were a couple years ago. His movement is very important to his game obviously.

He did make the last 4 GS finals, but he also had joke draws at Wimby and USO last year. His AO draw was a bit tougher, but he conveniently drew Fed at the AO instead of USO. He only beat a couple dangerous players in those 3 tournaments.
