High time for this obligatory TTW GPPD thread.

Sascha is 25. Will be 26 before 2023 French Open.

His BO5 record against Top10 opponents is no longer winless as he defeated Alcaraz at RG22.

A big fat ZERO.

Happy to be quoted if he somehow manages to break the hoodoo but he has shown nothing that he is going to.
Yeah I think that people highly overrate how well he was playing before the injury just because of that RG semi against Nadal, where Nadal was just really bad himself.

He still only has just one top 10 win at a slam. Yes it was against Alcaraz at this years RG (pre him becoming #1 and a slam champ) but if you've never notched a top 10 win against one of the big 3 even after all these years he's been on the scene, he's not proven anything. He doesn't have what it takes at the slams.

I'm just afraid his days are behind him. He couldn't consistently beat his contemporaries and even a much older Djokovic to begin with. Now the injury issues and the next gen with arguably more complete games than him compound things further. But I think he deserves a slam. The USO choke was a pity and last year it looked like he was beginning to work hard only to get injured again.

If he gets his serve together he still has the most potent game across surfaces among young players, IMO.

but he's a choking choker lololol

It's a testament to the strength of an era if such a great player is to remain slamless by the end of 2023.

When is Zverev return expected? I need this information to give an informed opinion.
If I don't receive any indications, I may give any kind of opinion.

Countdown in progress.

Null. It's hard to return after that kind of injury and win a slam for first time in your life.

But will win in 2024.

Whether he wins or loses the next official tournament will decide whether he will win 10 CYGS or should retire.
Disagree.

He will be adjusting his game step by step, wisely, gradually.

Even if his weapons won't be 100% efficient in Melbourne we can expect a full throttle at 2023 Roland-Garros.

You can imagine what will happen next year in New York and Turin. Total demolition.

I haven’t given up hope on Sasha. He’s too good of a player to count out at this stage in his career.

He's never gonna win a Slam and will be lucky to vulture a few 500s here and there, I don't buy that he will ever recover fully from that injury and he's about to age out of his athletic peak...

I'd be surprised if he makes it past 4R of any slam in 2023, tall guys and injuries don't go well together.

His level was definitely good enough to win RG this year imo, would be nice to see him bag at least one slam somewhere. He was really putting in work and improving
He WAS GOING TO LOSE TO RAFA despite the fact that Rafa was playing subpar in that semifinal, after back to back brilliant performances against the cat and the robot.

It was going to be an attrition battle. Sure Rafa was a clear fav but not 100% sure he could pull it off at 36.
Rafa already won set1 & was on the cusp of taking the set2 in a Tiebreaker, which he would have undoubtedly won. And I'd not trust Zverev of all people to pull off the upset after 2-0 down.

Both Zverev and Thiem were playing like absolute daisies in that final. Thiem a slightly less of a daisy than Zverev, that's why he won, which comes to my conclusion, that I have never seen a player play so tamely in a Slam final. And I've seen Murray pre 2012, Ruud, Cilic in 2017, Nishikori.

Zverev doesn't deserve a Slam.

Best shot is at Roland Garros and given the talent on clay; Nadal, Djokovic, Alcaraz, Sinner, Ruud, Rune, maybe even Thiem if he returns to form, et al. — I’m selling on him breaking through for his maiden major in 2023.

Zverev doesn't deserve a Slam.

Thiem had a major tactical weakness during that entire Slam run — hit flat, deep, and heavy into his backhand wing and he always answered with a slice response. In the first two sets Zverev masterfully exploited this weakness — knowing the slice was coming he came to the net and regularly and successfully finished off points. After he got up two sets to love he changed his game plan and began grinding with Thiem and going to work on his legs thinking that Thiem didn’t have the physicality to comeback against him to win three straight sets. In the fifth set he went back to his initial game-plan and had his chances — plenty of them. In hindsight it was a tactical blunder but only because Zverev couldn’t hold his nerve at the end of the match when Thiem was cramping and could barely walk.

Was it a good match? No. It was one of the worst all around majors in recent memory. However, the first two sets were a great tactical performance from Zverev who too regularly gets carried away with aimless pushing tactics without point construction.

In long term his biggest chances are at the USO I guess.
