How Many USTA League Matches Are You Playing Per Year?

Cindysphinx

G.O.A.T.
I was curious about how many USTA matches I have played since I first picked up a racket. I am starting to think that I have the highest league-matches-per-year average around here.

2005: 10
2006: 11
2007: 33
2008: 46
2009: 47
2010: 65
2011: 56

Total: 248

Yearly Average: 35.4

Maybe that's not so bad. The last two years have been my most active in league play. Even then, I'm playing fewer than 1.5 matches a week.

Can anyone beat my numbers?

17 league matches so far this year with combo and singles flex leagues coming up. mixed is winding down.

you got me ... this season I have 41 matches in the book ... best I could do If one of my teams went to nationals would still not top your total.

Seems to me the folks who should have the most matches are top 3.5's right at the senior cutoff line. This gives you the most options between mixed, multiple levels and teams.

Cindy wow! I thought I was bad. Here are my stats:

2011: 25 (Darn job relocation)
2010: 41
2009: 29
2008: 36
2007: 30
2006: 23
2005: 14
2004: 8
2003: 7

Total: 213 matches since I've started playing league tennis. Yes, you have definitely beat me. But this is why we love the sport.

So this motivated me to go back and check my stats ... darn the summer when I have endless hours to waste on this nonsense.

2011 41 + some more matches pending
2010 39
2009 19 Bump up
2008 34
2007 29
2006 16

for 178 total ...

And not surprisingly as I got better the ammount I played increased with my winning percentage and when I was bumped and my matches went down.

I don't play too many USTA league matches, but I might be able to top some of those numbers if I combined the other leagues I play in. :P

Gee, you folks all play a *lot* of USTA league tennis!!!

I only average about 12 matches a year. All regular Adult league.

Maybe in part it depends on the area/section you're in... here in Norcal, there's only season per year for each league. I'm not eligible for Seniors, and I'm not a fan of Mixed and Combo. So I end up playing just one season of Adult per year.

Very limited USTA league opportunities here for those of us who prefer singles and/or playing within level.

P.S. I'm not counting Flex at all since I don't consider it a league per se, but I do get in a fair amount of flex matches and also play in several local leagues. Counting everything, I probably get around 40 competitive matches per year.

I play about 15 per year. I commend you. I could not possibly play that much and reasonably expect to remain married.

230 thus far but I've been doing this since 02 and with a little one around the house now my wife and I won't be getting in the mixed doubles matches so my yearly average will be sure to drop off from the 25 and change that works out to be.

Oh, there are some serious tennis-playing opportunities around here.

Between now and the end of the year, I could play in the following USTA leagues:

Mixed senior 7.0 and 8.0 -- MD
Mixed senior 7.0 -- DC
Mixed combo 7.5 -- MD
Ladies day combo 7.5 and 6.5 -- VA
Ladies senior 3.5 and 4.0 -- DC
Ladies Tri-Level -- DC
Ladies 3.5 singles -- VA
Ladies day league 3.5 and 4.0 -- MD
Fall mixed 7.0 and 8.0 -- MD
Fall ladies combo 7.5 -- MD

These are the opportunities I plan to play or have been invited to play. None of the MD opportunities are outside of my county. If I were willing to play in one of three neighboring MD counties, this list would be a lot longer.

Good Lord Cindy!!!!!!! I'm tired just reading the long list. We would love for you to play in Columbia, Md :)

Ha!! If I decline, now you will understand why!

Of these opportunities, I plan only to play mixed senior 7.0, ladies senior 3.5, maybe tri-level, fall mixed 7.0 and fall ladies combo. That's enough!

Played 115 usta matches last year. Don't plan to play that many this year.

I have only been playing since 2010 but

2010: 10 Matches (1 League)
So far 2011: 20 Matches (2 Leagues and 1 Tournament)

so 15 Average

I play USTA but also ALTA and a lot of flex leagues...I usually play 3-5 matches per week. So, these aren't all USTA numbers, but allowing for travel and other off-weeks I would say I'm playing 120+ matches per year. Maybe I'll keep track now that Cindy has started this thread. :-)

For kicks I checked this years count. I've played 10 USTA league matches, and 22 tournament matches. I have not played any other years, so that's my total count as well. :)

OK, this got me curious too. I joined USTA in 2003:

2011: 25 and counting
2010: 34
2009: 34
2008: 57
2007: 29
2006: 15 (I'm surprised this was such a low year - I went to Nationals this season)
2005: 14
2004: 29
2003: 5

Total: 242 - I'm on yer tail, Cindy. I've also been in the leagues for a few more years, so you are certainly playing more matches per year.

I mentioned before, but I've only played 11 matches. Would have been maybe 15 if I was in perfect health the entire year.

I can't play seniors, and day leagues are only for ladies in these parts, so the only leagues I can really play are men's 3.5 in the spring, then mixed and tri-level doubles in the summer (this is the first year they are trying a tri-level doubles league here actually), then men's combo doubles and maybe a singles league in the fall/winter (if I was staying where I am and not moving somewhere that doesn't offer any leagues in the fall/winter :( )

Leagues here also tend to only have 9-11 matches per season (10-12 teams per flight, play through everyone once), and that tri-level doubles league only had a six match schedule. I've also only played 2 matches for the mixed team that I'm on, but this team has had the goal of going to playoffs (looking promising) and so is playing the stronger teams more often, and some of them are quite strong, and I understood all this when I signed up so I'm fine with it.

I'm more of a tournament player than a league guy, so I thought I'd give a different perspective. Here's my year so far:

USTA Tournaments:
Singles: 27
Doubles: 12
Mixed: 3
TOTAL: 42

USTA Leagues (Men's 4.5 & Mixed 9.0):
Singles: 1
Doubles: 5
Mixed: 2 (still going on)
TOTAL: 8

I also play in the Austin Tennis League (7 matches) and an Austin-wide singles ladder (15 matches), so that puts the grand total around 72 and counting... And here I thought Cindy was crazy >.>

I'm combining league (mixed, adult, combo) and tournaments...

2008: 38 ... Record: 20-18 ... NTRP: 3.0
2009: 24 ... Record: 13-11 ... NTRP: 3.5
2010: 68 ... Record: 52-16 ... NTRP: 3.5
2011: 26 ... Record: 17-9 ... NTRP: 4.0

I only have combo season left this year as my adult teams didn't make playoffs but I should hit 40 matches played. Playing a tourney this weekend which may be my last tourney of the year.

Imagine how many more matches you could play if you signed up for the singles leagues too.

Hey Cindy!

Your record seems pretty solid up to 8.0, was there a really big jump in playing level from 7.0 to 8.0?

-Fuji

Ho boy.

8.0 has been a nightmare. I have a 4.5 partner sometimes, but I really wilt under the relentless assault that comes my way. He is a good player, so we should be doing better. In other 8.0 matches, I have 4.0 partners and that never seems to go well.

I think this coming season will be better because I am getting better at returning serves, but it still isn't pretty. And it's no fun for anyone. Whoosh! Here comes the serve of the 4.0-4.5 guy. Whiff! There goes my botched return. No rally = no fun.

And yes, the jump from 7.0 is enormous. The 3.5 guys don't bother me at all anymore. (And honestly, I think I have the better second serve compared to them!).

Cindy...I'm going to have to come back to this but I know I've passed 70 matches this year already (counting, of course, everything).

Ahhhh! Makes sense! The jump between a 3.5 male serve and 4.5 is HUGE. I'm starting to compete at a decent level against 4.5 players, and my serve is starting to adjust a lot, just to compensate to get into rallies with them. I wasn't sure how large the gap would be in doubles where you have a partner though!

I find the key to take those big serves is to not step back, but to step INTO the serve. It's what helped me a ton. If I can get a solid step into a return whether it's a block or a full shot, I can really get some omph into my return.

Also, it doesn't surprise me you're 2nd serve is better then most 3.5 men! A LOT of males don't own a solid 2nd serve at that level I find. They just go for a softer flat or junk slice thing that fails a lot LOL!

Good luck! I hope you find a way to dominate 8.0! :D

I am at 62 for the year so far counting usta and alta.
Played a few tournaments that i didn't count.
Still finishing up summer leagues, then probably 4 or 5 more teams in the fall, plus fall alta. Winter is my off time, I only play 2 teams in the winter.

Just realized I need to cut back on playing in so many leagues and on so many teams.

There are 4 regions within an hour of my house. They all seem to schedule on different nites, so I just finished playing on 3 7.0 mixed teams in 3 different regions plus 2 combo teams. That adds up to alot of matches.

12 usta teams so far this year and 2 alta teams.

Dang....I need a break
