how much do you personal stringers charge for stringing other people's sticks?

i was wondering what the going rate is for personal stringers that string other's bats. i personal have been charging price of string + ten dollars for labor, fifteen if it's gut. is this too low, too high? cuz i am hurting for some extra money. man it seems everything in the world can be late, except for bills, you cant stop them. &*$%!!!!

Well in Australia. The place where go has really good stringers, with Babolat electronic sensor machines charge 15AU which is 11US. The strings always are straight and they get them done in 10 minutes and are always the right tension. Same price of $15 for natural gut.

Ten dollars for the labor is fair, but your price of string should include a mark up to cover the cost of your inventory. 25% or a $2.00 minimum. This places a value on your cash of 15 to 18 % about what a credit card company gets.:cool:

I charge $20 for PSGD or Gosen Micro. $23 for Prince Lightning. That's about all I have to use for the college kids that I string for. Some of the shops around here charge $20 for labor, so my prices are fairly low. I probably do charge a little more than some of the other home stringers in the area, but I'm a CS and have to make enough to justify the inventory I'm keeping and pay to make it worth my time.

I don't string to make a profit but for personal use, I string for my friends for 10 with psgd included if they want me to, don't have time to string a bunch of racquets.

Prices depends.
For friends i'll knock $5 off.

All Poly = $35 AUD= 26.0620 USD
Kevlar / SynGut = $30 AUD = 22.3389 USD
Poly / SynGut hybrid = $25 AUD = 18.6157 USD
Multis = $25 AUD = 18.6157 USD
Synguts = $20 AUD = 14.8926 USD
Nylons = $20 AUD = 14.8926 USD

Customer strings + Labour = $15 AUD = 11.1694 USD

AUD Australian dollars.
USD United states dollars.

I think your rates are very fair, if it's in a high traffic/need area with a low supply of stringers, i think $15 baseline is very fair if you are consistent and skilled. I have a ton of competition where i currently live (on a college campus), so I only charge $10 for labor as well (although i make the bulk of my money stringing for the college tennis team(s))

Their strings + 6 pack beer.

Hehe :-)

A friend of mine mostly strings my rackets (with my own string) and I often pay him with a bottle of (good) wine every now and then (I've tried offering him money but he wouldn't take them)

yea i was charging 15 us dollars for a psgd job and it takes me 20mins. to string it so i guess im right on par. i am the one of the very few stringers in the area so i get a decent amount of sales. unless people want to trust their racket with sportsmart (heard deadly tales of this place here on the boards) their only other option is go go thru the club which sends their rackets out and one of my friends there got his racket lost because of them or take it to the shop which is extremly expensive and they usually take an hour to get your racket done because they have so many rackets to string and usually only one person to string. so more and more people have been asking me to string their rackets.

I follow the pricing scheme PBODY99 mentioned in his post($10 labor plus $2 charge to cover carrying expenses on the string. I charge an extra $5 for gut. I'll often throw in a blue Gamma overgrip for no charge if the grip is worn or dirty. Many shops charge $15-18 labor plus twice their cost for the string. They need to because of their overhead costs; rent, salaries, inventory, insurance, utilities, expenive machines, etc.

I live in the San Gabriel Valley which is east of downtown Los Angeles. I charge the same for labor as my club, $12, but get business because my turn-around is 1 day while the club's is up to a week. I also add 25% or $2.00 minimum to the cost of strings to cover the cost of my inventory.

man you guys are lucky. i had got two of my rackets strung by my club one time since my friend who has a machine was out fo town, and they charged $30 EACH JUST FOR LABOR! (I found out later that they charged $50 with psg) Its theft! I was gunna get all four of my rackets strung but with prices like that, i would rather live on two, and wait until my friend comes back. (btw i never have to pay for string jobs since i just use my friends machine).
Now you guys think that your clubs are overpriced on strings)

$30 for labor is outrageous! I pretty much was driven to learn how to string myself becuase the closest good stringer was 25 minutes away. He charged $20-25 labor depending on what he was stringing. Syn gut was $23-25 and multi and hybrids were $30-35. Throw in the 100 minutes of driving back and forth twice and it was pretty much a no brainer.

What is funny is that these sporting goods stores charge $20 AUD = $25+USD for string labour + double strings actual costs, yet they can only give 24 - 48+ hours pickup.

So if someone rings or knocks on your door at 12-4am, asking you to string 3-4 rackets before his 8am tournament match, you'll do it for those prices..neat. :mrgreen:

Absolutely correct. Highlight what you can do that other options can't do and you'll find a nice customer base.

Avoid the people who want pro shop level service - only faster and cheaper. They'll be pains in the rear and ultimately not worth the frustration.

I agree w/ Goober. Four of us play in my family, my wife, daughter, son and myself and the only decent stringer was a 30 minute ride away. He charged 28.00 for Prince Lightning and 40 for Babolat Excel Premium. Those are the going rates around here (southern NJ) and he was a very nice man and a very good stringer. But between the drive and the cost of stringing it got to be pretty expensive. So, I bought a stringer (Eagnas Flex 940) and hope to recoup my investment in a year. I haven't pursued trying to make money doing this, just trying to save a few bucks.

But if I were to charge for stringing it would probably be $18.00 for multi or synthetic, and $25.00 for gut. They gotta provide their own string, cause I'm not going to carry any inventory. Sheesh, it's tough gathering your thoughts for these things...:D

Well, I've only been charging 7 for labor, but I'm about to go up to 8 - an insignificant increase, it seems.

man, my friend doesent even string for me for $7!. you could probably go up to $10 without anybody minding much. 7 dollars for labor is really really cheap, hopw do you make money?

Yeah, I thought I was charging way too low; but I need to get more customers first. As to how I make any money, I'm only a high school junior and I don't really need much money. It's more so I can buy my own string to string up my own racquets.

I a sucka because I do it for my friends for free. However, I don't advertise that I string to many people.

$10 if they have their own string.
$10 plus 2X the cost of the string if I supply the string, works out to between $15 to $22.

Small customer base

Equinox,
My customers are all just club players and none have ever asked for more than a 1 day turn-around. My volume is pretty low averaging 2-3 string jobs a week so I've never strung more than 3 racquets in one night. I'm retired and only interested in makeing a little lunch money and saving my friends a few bucks. I'll pass on the business rather than stay up late to string.

my local stringer charges 10, 12, and 15 dollars to string synthetic, polyester, and natural.

Stringing is free if you buy the string from him... but the string itself costs a lot more... $25 for luxilon bb's

my tennis coach on the other hand strings it with either gamma synthetic 16, or gosen polylon 16, or hybrid for just $10.

its 10$ plus your own string, then he has some of his own strings... i got charged 25$ for a alupower/NXT hybrid.

$10 for the labor plus cost of string +$2 for my friends. However, I give a better deal to my mixed doubles partner. ;-)

Here at S***t C****t we charge $14.99 for PSGD and thats with labor. If you bring in your own string we charge $10.

I charge $10 for the labor and then my string cost + % to cover inventory. I have a couple of clients that bought reels or bring in the string they want. Then I just charge the labor.

I will bump the labor charge up if you decide to make your broken strings my emergency. In other words you "have to have the racquet" the next day or same day. My feeling that if you're playing tournaments you should have more than 1 stick and you should be checking your strings a day or so in advance of your 1st match. I realize that some people do blow through strings more frequently than others but you should always check your gear before your 1st match.

But also, what kind of machines are you using? a lot of the pro shops and specialty shops charge more because of the top of the line machines they use.

A lot of this just depends on your area. If there is a lot of competition, then prices will be low, if there isn't then prices will be high.

Also, some of the people here say they can do it in 10-15 minutes. That is a tournament stringer doing a super rush job. If you can mount, open the string pack, string the racket, tie off, cut excess and straighten out the strings in 10 minutes, then hats off because even the speed stringing contest, the guy who won did it in 11 minutes. To say that you as a home stringer can do it faster than guys on top of the line electric, I find that hard to believe. 15, believable, 10.. not so believable

In singapore we have this shopping center that sells all the sporting equipment and they charge S$8 for workmanship if you bring your own string, and free of charge if you buy the string from them. It takes them about one hour to do one racket (as they have to attend to customers, etc) so if you happen to go on a day when they're free then it's good. Else you gotta wait longer if they have a lot of string jobs.

Btw on the average how fast can the best stringers take to do a racket?

I try to charge under the lowest pro string I've heard in my area, so I charge $9, good for 40 minutes at most of work for high school, and then I'll charge and $1-$3 extra of string they buy from me (so $2 synthetic gut will be $3 for them)
I pay for shipping and stuff, and I'm still cheeper than stores (They charge like $11 for Lightning XX)

10 bucks for ppl at school, and 20 bucks for the old people over at the fancy country club, its a deal for them too, cause otherwise they'd be paying 30
