How much does Fed and Nadal being photogenic help their popularity?

I remember there was once a Sports Illustrated cover with Ivan Lendl on the cover that was captioned "The Champion No One Cares About".

Lendl was GOAT-ing in his day, but I don't think he was exactly the most photogenic guy around. And that seems to have affected his popularity. His personality didn't exactly help, but if he looked like Bjorn Borg, I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have needed a personality to be popular.

Fed wasn't always photogenic. Early in his career, with the slicked back ponytail and prominent nose, I think he actually looked like a hot mess. But then he got the Anna Wintour makeover and the 800 dollar haircuts, and made a somewhat miraculous transformation into stylish Mr GQ. History might have taken a different turn if not for the intervention of Anna Wintour.

These guys are GOAT level players, and their accomplishments speak for themselves. But I think their photogenic images must have helped them reach a level of popularity experienced by no one else in the game (except maybe Borg).

Rafi photogenic!?!?!? Is this a joke? - The poor thing is SO fugly!!!!
Bizarre statement. I think Nadal was photogenic since day 1 on the tour. He's always taken a good picture. His image as a young player (in the Pirate look days) was kind of like a Latin Borg, that women were supposed to be attracted to.

Federer needed some serious help to look presentable. Hence the Anna Wintour makeover thing. For several years early in his career, I think Federer could be considered downright unattractive. He aged well into his looks (with the help of a lot of stylists).

Yeah. Federer has really been helped by that, ageing well, the image his sponsors aimed for, as well as the appeal of his game type.

If you look at the end of 2003, Roddick was probably at least twice as marketable as Federer, but then he went to Lacoste, fell from the top 3, and he didn't age all that well.

It's bizarre that Nadal is apparently considered sexy. His face, the central feature of a person's looks, is quite funny and gave birth to that hilarious "Rafael Nadal looks like a [CENSORED] meem. For the record, I don't think any of the Big 3/4/5 are particularly beautiful either.

Lendl certainly wasn't handsome, but I think his mean, antagonistic on-court personality was a bigger factor. Actually, I think young Lendl looked nice when he was only emerging as a top player, but his face soon became "battle-hardened", reflecting his mental approach. Edberg, in contrast, was not only a beauty, but also quite a sweetheart, so people quickly took a liking to him.

Federer was already quite popular for his age before he adopted the gentlemanerer image, too - must have had more to do with his actual game than looks. I'm sure Zverev would be more popular if he was a nice guy and player, rather than a bratty whiner with a choking streak.

rafa went from large adult capybarson to naked mole rat in a span of 15 years, my dude
Apprarently, a lot of sexually active females find large adult capyybarson's incredibly attractive/sexy, because Nadal had a swooning young female fanbase when he was a teenager.

The young Fed's fanbase had dudes who admired his game, and Grandmothers who wanted to make him a home cooked meal. Young Nadal was considered a sex symbol. Young Fed was not. That's just reality, when you take away the insults or personal opinions on someones looks.

Fed started out life unfortunate looking.
Wrong. He was a cute boy and a reasonably cute teen. There is nobody but a hater that would claim he started out life "unfortunate looking."

Picking out two hideous photos during a brief time period when he wore ugly hairdos doesn't translate into "unfortunate looking."

Neither Fed or Rafa are particularly handsome but both made the absolute most of what they have. Fed with endless stylists, Nadal with his hair transplant, etc.

Is Federer’s father Italian?

Both are photogenic only because of their success. Neither is a real trainwreck, but both are "just guys." Pity for the ad market that Feli Lopez was never a contender. Coulda put tennis on his shoulders the way Borg did; coulda made it relevant again.

Same reason it's a shame the WTA didn't police itself better.

Listen, I'm not saying you are delusional......buutttt....Nadal was the one with the swooning teenage girl fanbase when was 17/18. He was considered "hot" in his late teens in whatever metric you care to use (Face/Body). He didn't need to grow into his looks or have an Anna Wintour make-over to be considered attractive.

I detect some passive-agressivity here. Nadal with his hair transplant... :D

Nadal had the looks battle with Fed won as a teenager. Sadly, much like the H2H, Fed turned things around later in life.

true tho i would quibble with qualifying them all as "young" as more than a fair share of that sort have been mugshots in mary kay letourneau-type stories

Didn't Anna Wintour first met Fed around the USO in 2005 though? He already have his modern day look by then, the transformation was around year end 2004.
It was Mirka who changed his looks iirc from articles I've read in the past. She is the reason in fact why Anna Wintour became a close friend; Mirka's dad is a jewellery designer and Mirka has apparently always had an interest in fashion/design.

I think there's a difference between 'photogenic' and 'good looks'. I mean, you can argue that Djokovic is better looking than Federer or Nadal,it's not for me to say but many people would feel that way. I don't think he's photogenic though,as hard as he tries,he just doesn't have the X factor that Fed/Nadal have and he's looked the same since, probably his teens. Seriously, did he come out of the womb with that hair? Yeah,I think it's a factor for sure

Young Nadal was certainly quite photogenic. Similar to Agassi, their styles on and off the court appealed more to women and youths. Rafa had the long hair, sleeveless shirts, big muscles and an athletic build, along with an energetic style of play. As most have said in this thread, young Fed was not good looking whatsoever, and was never going to be like Borg, Agassi or Nadal in that department. Fed became more popular over the years since he transformed into the sophisticated businessmen type of style, which earned him the "good guy; role model" tag, along with attraction to the middle-aged to older demographic. Fed also has good command of the English language (which is obviously a key aspect in the Western marketing world), especially for someone who isn't from an Anglo-speaking country, and he also has an outgoing personality, along with incredible talent, so that as a whole has allowed him to gain tons of sponsorships, hence an increase in popularity.

Very thinly veiled attempt by the OP to attack Federer's looks. Any way for Nadal fans to get a cheap shot in, they'll take it.

He may not be from an English speaking country, but he did have the benefit of having an English speaking mother and was raised speaking English.

Sorry but you can't. IMO he is neither good looking nor photogenic. I do agree that he does not have 'the X factor's

Huh?

Nadal is far more popular than Federer on social media. Nadal has 15 million followers on twitter. Federer has 11 million followers. And both of them have about 14 million followers on facebook, which older users tend to favor. Facebook should favor Federer more, yet they are dead even.

Based on their social media following, Nadal is more popular than Federer. And they are equally famous.

Federer is more popular within the mainstream media (which is not the same as social media, who are ordinary people). For example, the BBC (mainstream media) will choose to nominate Federer over Nadal for their overseas personality of the year, giving people the opportunity to vote for Federer. Mainstream media like to market Federer to people who like luxury goods, so they promote him more.

It's telling that Federer won the Australian Open last year, yet Nadal was made the cover star of the new Australian Open video game. A video game is something ordinary people can afford and buy, so Nadal is more appealing to that market.

I don't think either are very photogenic. Actually, none of the Big Four. Roger is more photogenic today than he was 10 years ago. I'm a dude who is not photogenic, either, so I don't care! I'll say what I want. lol
Rafa reminds me of those evil characters from The Lord of The Rings when he's playing. He certainly contorts his face in ways I just don't understand.. looks like a feral animal being shot to death.

Roger has always had a nose that looks like a baked potato.

Djokovic looks painfully thin. His brother Marko by contrast looks a lot better and healthier. Better looking than Feliciano Lopez.. I've never understood that appeal .. but whatever.

Murray looks so scruffy .. like he needs a proper wash.

I'm not sure there are very many photogenic tennis players (in the top 100) without a team to make them that way during photo shoots.

Andy Roddick always made the ladies swoon back in the day. One announcer in Australia called him the male version of Anna K. Shame he didn't always show a great attitude on court. Quite a whiner.
There was an Italian player whose name I can't remember that was very photogenic. He played dubs with Fognini one year at Davis Cup I think.
There was a guy from Ecuador that Anna dated for a while that got a lot of ads in magazines.

Any others?

Tennis is not a modeling competition, and fans don't support Federer and Nadal based on how they look. Roger and Rafa are so insanely popular mainly because of their achievements, exceptional tennis skills, and great charisma. Perhaps there are some people who became fans by being attracted to Federer or Nadal's appearances, but those are far and few in between IMO.

Sportsmen being photogenic is mostly important to the brands that endorse them, as good-looking people sell more.

Did Roddick have any other options? Or did Lacoste just throw the kitchen sink at him and gave him the best offer possible?

Hair transplant? Rafa was handsome already over a decade before his hair transplant.
