How much does Fed and Nadal being photogenic help their popularity?

he also has an outgoing personality
In a very early match against Rafter at the FO the commentator described him as "very charismatic". Reassures me when I get told on social media that all Fed fans are just hapless brainless sheep deceived by marketing and the media.

Because Federer is a grown man with a family. While Nadal lives at home with his uncle and needs a nightlight, so Nadal would appeal to individuals who play videos games. Federer is more popular and he does need to lend his name to video games.
OMG! This Fedfan keeps alive the fake story created by his collaborators about Rafa a long time ago!

And as an added bonus they look good together too!

I cannot believe people are arguing over who is more popular in such a serious way. They are both insanely popular, the two Gods of tennis. This truly is a low point in the Fedal debate...You cannot be GOAT if you are not the most popular....
There was a similar debate a couple of days ago - just be thankful you obviously slept through that one.

Not sure for my simple mind . I wouldn’t give Nadal a second look if he did not have the 16 majors behind him
There is no doubt that his GS titles is one of the reasons you keep your eyes on him and your fingers on the keyboard to write spiteful comments about him.

I'll settle for Nadal having 4 million more followers on Twitter than Fed as tangible evidence of his popularity, than a relatively small band of bored housewives with "RF" hats spamming the ATP website for months on end with "votes" every year to make Federer looks more popular. I don't think Nadal fans care enough about those awards to organise it like a business. I've never once voted on them.

Federer actually directs his fans to go vote for him on it.
Federer apparently overtook Nadal on insta followers. VB losing their last few bastions.

He may not be from an English speaking country, but he did have the benefit of having an English speaking mother and was raised speaking English.

Sorry but you can't. IMO he is neither good looking nor photogenic. I do agree that he does not have 'the X factor's
Federer ' s mother is not English speaking. She is a South African from Dutch decent and her mother language is Afrikaans (Cape Dutch)

Huh?

Nadal is far more popular than Federer on social media. Nadal has 15 million followers on twitter. Federer has 11 million followers. And both of them have about 14 million followers on facebook, which older users tend to favor. Facebook should favor Federer more, yet they are dead even.

Based on their social media following, Nadal is more popular than Federer. And they are equally famous.

Federer is more popular within the mainstream media (which is not the same as social media, who are ordinary people). For example, the BBC (mainstream media) will choose to nominate Federer over Nadal for their overseas personality of the year, giving people the opportunity to vote for Federer. Mainstream media like to market Federer to people who like luxury goods, so they promote him more.

It's telling that Federer won the Australian Open last year, yet Nadal was made the cover star of the new Australian Open video game. A video game is something ordinary people can afford and buy, so Nadal is more appealing to that market.
Brother katy perry has what 8 times followers of nadal. So does bieber. omg facts has half the number of nadals followers. The white hojse has more followers than nadal. Pick a random celeb they probably have more twitter followers or similar. There are random companies and random people and random websites with more followers then fed or nads

Twitter followers has to do with how much and what you post and how many pictures of your ass are available. Nadal posts significantly more than federer and also appeals to for example teenage fangirls

Brother look at things more deeply

Also sponsorship dollar will tell you how marketable someone is too. One game cover for a specific year is irrelvant. Federer makes more when he is not playing, injured or those years he wasnt winning than the no1 player in tennis at the time was

Regarding looks federer looked nerdy in older days but has aged well and looks ok. Nadal hasnt aged very well but looks ok. Theyre both men they dont need to be models to be popular, marketted or respected... they need to be good at what they do and accomplished to be marketable, popular etc as men as long as they are not actively ugly (which few people even are) or look really mean or deadpan or something its fine

That's OK. Federer is also highly popular and joined Insta earlier than Nadal. Djokovic used to lead them both with more followers on Insta as he was the first of the three to join Insta.

All I see the real popular player (Federer) and the player who is a leech (Nadal). If Nadal is so popular or photogenic, why does he come off so desperate to be associated with Federer when it sues him.

Nadal and Djokovic fans are pathetic and desperate to hold Federer down because otherwise neither player couldn’t hang. Federer has 20 GS titles and way more popular than either of those two players. In the end, Nadal and Djokovic won’t be able associate themselves with Federer as their fans hope.

I know she is South African, but I think she spoke English from an early age and it became her primary language.

https://www.geni.com/people/Lynette-Federer/6000000017358845243

Afrikaan was the spoken language on her family’s farm—she had three siblings; her father was a foreman and her mother was a nurse but Lynette went to an English school and her intention was to save money as quickly as possible and to travel to Europe. She preferred England, where her father was stationed during World War II

Why do you and Kitana hate Fed so much lol. I'm not his fan, so I don't watch his matches often, and don't think about him. Let him have his fans though. How big would Nadal have been if he didn't exist?

I remember there was once a Sports Illustrated cover with Ivan Lendl on the cover that was captioned "The Champion No One Cares About".

Lendl was GOAT-ing in his day, but I don't think he was exactly the most photogenic guy around. And that seems to have affected his popularity. His personality didn't exactly help, but if he looked like Bjorn Borg, I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have needed a personality to be popular.

Fed wasn't always photogenic. Early in his career, with the slicked back ponytail and prominent nose, I think he actually looked like a hot mess. But then he got the Anna Wintour makeover and the 800 dollar haircuts, and made a somewhat miraculous transformation into stylish Mr GQ. History might have taken a different turn if not for the intervention of Anna Wintour.

These guys are GOAT level players, and their accomplishments speak for themselves. But I think their photogenic images must have helped them reach a level of popularity experienced by no one else in the game (except maybe Borg).
I'm sure it helps. But coupled with their success.
I think it's slightly different for the women: Navratilova had comparable success to Evert but never made close to the off court earnings of Evert.
Sharapova doesn't come close to the on-court achievements of Serena Williams but certainly used to make tons more money off court. I'm not sure if this is still the case since being banned?
Kournikova was amongst the highest earners of any sport at the time.
Being photogenic rarely holds any one back...

I don't think either are very photogenic. Actually, none of the Big Four. Roger is more photogenic today than he was 10 years ago. I'm a dude who is not photogenic, either, so I don't care! I'll say what I want. lol
Rafa reminds me of those evil characters from The Lord of The Rings when he's playing. He certainly contorts his face in ways I just don't understand.. looks like a feral animal being shot to death.

Roger has always had a nose that looks like a baked potato.

Djokovic looks painfully thin. His brother Marko by contrast looks a lot better and healthier. Better looking than Feliciano Lopez.. I've never understood that appeal .. but whatever.

Murray looks so scruffy .. like he needs a proper wash.

I'm not sure there are very many photogenic tennis players (in the top 100) without a team to make them that way during photo shoots.

Andy Roddick always made the ladies swoon back in the day. One announcer in Australia called him the male version of Anna K. Shame he didn't always show a great attitude on court. Quite a whiner.
There was an Italian player whose name I can't remember that was very photogenic. He played dubs with Fognini one year at Davis Cup I think.
There was a guy from Ecuador that Anna dated for a while that got a lot of ads in magazines.

Any others?
I suspect you mean Nicholas Lapentti. Extremely good looking.

If only all their fans could be this way also. Two legends.
It’s the same with Messi and Ronaldo both seem friendly towards each other but the fan bases are toxic with each other. (Probably even more toxic than Fedal)

Yes, Rafa came onto the scene armed with 16 slams. Rafa has been extremely popular from the day he turned pro.
Mostly Rafa appeals to teen girls and gay men . Not much likes from other groups

Most find his butt picking and sniffing extremely gross. Can you tell me how you get over that nonsense ?

Weakerer rings true, Leechdal doesn't.
@fedtennisphan brother you do not need to respond to this, this forum needs peace. Clayqueen is suffering brother. He is just lashing out. The desperation is so intenese that he is lashing out even at nadal. You dont need to tell this wounded poster that Nadal won his slams in the exact same era as federer and that nadal is literally unable to stop federer achieve everything he is doing RIGHT NOW. Do you think he does not know this?? Brother forgive the clayqueen he knows this brother. Do you know how hard it is to know that nadal has completely failed to stop federer. You need to understand the intense humilation and the grieving that the vamos are experiening with all their old arguements now haunting them brother. They have experienced a literal berevement. Vamos is finished. Its over. They are coming to terms with picking the losing horse and the fact that their enemy has completely overshadowed nadal. The berevement is literal:

This forum has literally died for the them. Every post will be about 20 slams and will only get worse when threads roll in about 100 titles, world no 1 at 37. There will always be the fear of the vamos that what if a wimbeldon happens, what if USO happens. Will nadal become even more irrelvant at these events. How are they supposed to deal with this? Have compassion brother. They are humiliated.

The media legacy is dead. People will only talk about the 20 slam 100 title legend. Nadal has become the other guy who played during the legends era. Like the other guys who race against bolt, no one cares or the other boxers around ali. It doesnt matter if nadal gets 19.999 slams. He is the other guy. How can vamos deal with this brother?

Their boys legacy at AO, wimbeldon, USO, WTF and other big tournaments has literally died. No one cares about the 1x AO champion or will raise him in discussion when their are 2 6 time champions. Same with his 2 wimbeldons vs 8 or 7 for others. His 3 USO is irrelevant when there are 3 5 times champions. Nadal will only be mentioned as trivia for facing the lowest ranked USO finalist in history. It will be trivia. In all other senses nadal legacy has died at these tournaments

HOW CAN THEY DEAL WITH THIS BROTHER?? ITS OK FOR YOU YOUR BOY WON. He won brother. Theyre boy lost and now the vamos is humiliated. Do you know how humiliating it must be for them to be forced to follow federes schedule and beg and pray he doesnt play dubai or win halle and once again overshadow nadal or win USO and make nadals records so inferior it becomes a joke. If federer gets the slam record at 3 slams and the WTF how are vamos going to cope? They cant even cope now. Have mercy brother

There is too much conflict on this forum. The world needs more understanding brother. Forgive me if I have offended I am just highlighting the humiliation of vamos so people can have empathy brother. You will never know these things as you picked the right horse brother. Spare a thought for vamos. They have been crushed

I don't know about English being her "primary language". She gives interviews on South African TV in Afrikaans and I've only seen interviews with her in Afrikaans publications in South Africa. Unusual for Afrikaans speakers who prefer English. Charlize Theron for instance would say a few words in Afrikaans and then quickly switch over to English.

There was a quite a lengthy interview with Lynette a few years back on South African TV (in fluent Afrikaans in a very Afrikaans accent) where she spoke about Roger 's legacy and his longevity.

Anyways this is way off topic...

Well this is only partly true as I know that she went to English schools from the very beginning in Kempton Park (East Johannesburg) and grew up speaking English despite coming from Afrikaans descent - which was rather unusual & open-minded for that time. And they did communicate in English as I know by 100% that Robert does no speak any Afrikaans except for a couple words perhaps ;)
