How Rafa Nadal Has Influenced Casper Ruud

I didn’t realise Nadal played a bunch of ATP250 tournaments that had no top 30 players to help break himself into the top 10. Which is exactly what Casper Ruud did this year.

Looks like someone didn't watch the video. YouTube banned in Australia?
I watched it. He even said himself how winning those 3 easy titles back to back to back “helped him.” Like buddy you didn’t face a single top 30 player in those 3 title runs to get 750 points. Nadal would never. He played challenger draws and scooped up points. He’s now a top 10 player with let me check how many top 10 wins.... oh yeah. 3.

Groundbreaking.

Felix Auger is #11 in the world with a 4R at the AO, QF at Wimbledon, SF at the USO and 4 top 10 wins this year including beating Federer on grass and Zverev at Wimbledon. He’s held out of the top 10 by this guy who’s only there for winning 3 titles on clay without playing a top 30 player. Amazing.

Ruud needs to improve mentally when he faces top 10 players to not fall apart, but his game is here. For him on HC to beat Murray, Sonego, Dimitrov and Norrie is actually a huge step on this surface

Except Nadal went on to murder all comers on a surfrace in one of the most dominant careers of any sport. That **** ain't engineered with a bit of Tio Toni 250 cherry picking bulltish in the early career.

That's harsh. Ruud has beaten top guys in big tournaments this year:
FAA, Tsitsipas in Madrid.
Schwartzman, Fognini, PCB in Monte Carlo.
Opelka, Schwartzman in Cincinnati.
Shapovalov in the Geneva final.
Murray, Sonego, Dimitrov and Norrie last week.

Breaking into top 10 is seldom done by winning masters and slams out of nowhere :)

Ruud is not a special talent like Nadal. He is a hard worker, so he gets results. It's hard not to respect his improvement this season, although I do not think he would have been top 10 in a more "normally strong" top 30 tour. There are lots of players at almost the same level after Big3 + Med/ Tsitsi/ Zverev.

Nadal influencing Ruud:

Plan A: Hit with more spin to the BH.
Plan B: Hit with much much more spin to the BH.
Plan C: Hit with moonball to the BH.

That's it. That's the influence.

At least Ruud knows how to win titles. He should give tips to FAA.

Im Norwegian and do agree that while the critizism leveled here is a bit harsh, its not untrue. He has been underwhelming at Slams, with the obvious loss to Davidovich Fokina at RG is simply not good enough for a clay specialist.

he needs to step it up beyond the ATP250 tournaments and not become a Wosniacki grinder of points. Slams and Masters are where you prove your mettle - ATP250s are kids play.

> Player wins 5 ATP250s in a year; 4 on clay with 3 back-to-back wins; 1 on hc.
> 5 finals, 5 titles in 2021 (FAA 0/8)
> 2 ATP1000 clay SFs, 2 ATP1000 hc QFs, losing to much better ranked players.

> TT: "Mug", "FAA being held out of top 10 by CR", "ATP 250 are kids' play"

There's no stopping other players passing CR on the ranking list.
They just need to win matches.

It's pretty apparent who the real mugs are.

Just out of curiosity, for those who think CR doesn't deserve his ranking (currently #10):

Which player below him in the ranking do you think is consistently better on both clay and hc (and grass for that matter)?

ATP250 is not a priority for the top10 players usually. lets see in indian wells.
I love Casper but he needs to start delivering in slams. 1K clays this year has been good
