How Federer turned $10M into $600M by walking away from Nike

There’s a sense of inevitability that Novak Djokovic will soon become men’s tennis greatest Slam champion, but off the court there is an undisputed champion: Roger Federer.

The big three — Djokovic, Federer and Rafael Nadal — are locked on 20 Grand Slam victories, with the former missing a chance to move clear at the recent US Open, while also blowing the rare Grand Slam in his defeat to Daniil Medvedev.

Yet not even Djokovic can match Federer’s marketability.

The Swiss Prince has left his modern day greats languishing well behind when it comes to endorsements.

Federer is one of only six athletes to cross $1 billion in career earnings while still active.

But it was his decision to walk away from Nike which proved a cash windfall for the recently turned 40-year-old, who is set to drop outside the top 10 on the ATP rankings for the first time since 2017.

As Joe Pompliano detailed at the end of September, it was a masterstroke to enter a 10-year deal with Japanese brand Uniqlo and one that would see him continued to rake in the money even if he retired from the game.

Federer is reportedly eyeing one more year on the ATP circuit after an injury-plagued season in 2020.

Lol, Federer invested his brand and money like any investor would do.

i also invested a good chunk of money in a company like NVDA( Nvidia) than INTC (intel) and I have enjoyed the windfall . So this is not an unsurprising move and it’s not like a unheard move or something.

he is playing it smart and that’s how you make those good financial moves.
This a standard financial move anyone of his earnings should make. Let’s not get too exited like this is some kind of insane move

btw ON shoes is down 25% last week. So shove off $100M from that

“Why did Federer dip from the biggest sporting brand in the world to sign with some random Japanese apparel brand?”

Random Japanese apparel brand is giving him the biggest payday of his life.

Who freaking cares. He's a rich guy because he made tons of money. We need an article about this?

Is Uniqlo a good popular brand?
I can't get over the hideous square logo
It's as ugly as the Manchester United shirt with the huge Chevrolet thing

You didn’t even get what I was trying to say. Lol

I was speaking more about finance and I don’t care fed loses or gains. I think he has earned for several generations. Not sure why you as a fed fan would care about it either.

Devils always in the detail. I doubt this guy has seen the detail. I think it's highly likely the deal was benfitial to Federer but its fiction to say $10m to $300m without seeing the contract.

Does Uniqlo make their products with slave labor like Just Do Slavery? If not, double big win for Fed.

NewBalance is the only shoe brand I know that doesn’t use any slave or child labor.

Uniqlo kind of got ****ed by that deal. Not sure if fed can generate 30 mil of profit in one year to justify paying him that amount.
Trust me, with how fast his stuff goes out of stock the second it is put up, he’s making them some green.

So, before he was rich, and now he is richer?
I am sure this made big difference in his life...
Now, let's talk about tennis... Lol...

As a Djokfan, I much rather have Novak be the greatest of the B3 (which he is), than the richest of them.

"His decision to walk away from Nike proved to be a cash windfall"

This is a dumb statement. He walked away from Nike because he was offered a cash windfall.

Its not ingenius to accept an offer 3 times your current deal.

Its not like he quit Nike and crossed his fingers something better came along. The deal from Uniqlo made him quit Nike.

He’s going to be their global ambassador and model for years after he retires. Fed’s retirement means nothing for his pocketbook. His On shoes have already made him a multi-billionaire.

Their fault. They got blinded by the name "Roger Federer" and overestimated how much profit they would make through him.

Wonder how much of the business brain is Roger's and how much of it is down to Mirka and maybe other family members and/or close associates?

Either way he has obviously been benefitting from some of the best financial advice an already wealthy sportsman could ever ask for!!

There must be a very small amount of business minded Federer fans interested in this. Perhaps it’s to sell them the expensive watches and other products he endorses.

It's really about branding. Fed represents a middle class image which is what Uniqlo are after despite their stuff being pretty affordable.

It's not really financial advice needed.

Hey fed Nike are offering you $10million year whilst Uniqlo are offering you $30million a year guaranteed for 10 years even after you retire.

After thinking long and hard as your expert financial advisor I recommend the Uniqlo deal.

And I doubt Fed was thinking are you sure, I was favouring carrying on with the Nike deal.

If someone offers Nadal double what Nike are offering he will drop them like a sack of potatoes.

It will be a case of Nike who?

lol! I wonder what Octo here is going to be doing in a few years after Rafito has retired.
Literally nothing will change since she's never actually talked about tennis here. It's always just about Nadal the person. She'll continue to post every event he appears at, every story he's mentioned in, every paparazzi's photo of him on a boat, etc.

Fed devotees can't stand info about Rafa, because this makes it harder for them to fabricate stories about Rafa. :D

Fed has by far the best portfolio of sponsors and makes more $$$ from sponsorships than any other athlete on the planet. That's hardly surprising, I mean, who would be better as "global ambassador" for your brand than Federer? Looks good, classy, charming, speak several languages fluently, etc... He's a sponsor's dream and he's raking in the cash.

Doesn't really dispute what I said. It's okay, you can own it, it's what you enjoy for whatever reason. No need to deny that you never engage in actual inside the lines tennis discussion and only post about Rafa as a person or to correct someone on a fact of his career.
