How strong is Jannik Sinner's form right now?

Without the benefit of the post-semi final hindsight, what do you make of Sinner's current form?

If his level in last years final was a 9.5, where is he at right now?

For reference, his current dominance ratio in this tournament is 1.62
Through the QF in 2025, his dominance ratio was 1.96

That is a substantial drop-off, but still demonstrates some form. In both seasons his draw through the QF were quite weak.

Uninspiring, but does he need to be?

I’m inclined to think that the fact Djokovic has never won a Slam without dropping a set is not a coincidence. If someone assembles the big data, dominating the early rounds too much probably goes in the opposite direction with likelihood of winning the tournament, just like struggling too much in the early rounds.

If you are a big player, usually winning a Slam means 1-2, maximum 3 matches of your best effort, and you want to approach these matches somewhat tested, just not overcooked.

Sinner has the game to butcher players of that quality and march to the title. The question is whether he is physically and mentally healthy.
Why wouldn't he be physically ready? He's had no serious competition. Has not been pushed.
And the SF match is guaranteed to be in the late afternoon/evening, so heat should not be a factor.

I remember someone on TTW years back proving with medical researches that after your best match often comes your worst match, and it has more to do with the brain than with the muscles, as human mental capacity is limited, burnout gets you.

So ideally you don’t want to overcommit early.

My analysis:

The serve itself has much improved from 2025 - he is serving much more aces in the 2026 edition of Wimbledon

He is holding less than 2025 Wimbledon; Why is that? Because his baseline game has clearly declined - he makes uncharacteristic errors in rallies, especially for the out wide forehand

In essence, he is serving more aces with a decline in baseline tolerance. He is slightly weaker than the 2025 version

I think the inverse would have served him better for Djokovic.

Agreed. But let's see if he steps it up on Friday. If he reproduces his 2025 baseline game and hold rate, and maintains the ace rate of 2026, its game over for Djokovic 3-0 IMO

Here's hoping. We need him to save tennis. I think everyone knows the match is on Jannik's racket, it's a question of which version shows up on Friday.

I'm talking about his sun issues.
Sinner played flawlessly with no sign of heat issues in the past three matches.
Sinner played Struff this early afternoon under bright, sunny skies with court-side temperatures around 84°F to 88°F.
The weather forecast for Friday is similar but Sinner will be playing late afternoon/evening with even cooler temps.

His sun issues are way overblown. It will not be a problem.

Should be more worried that his strokes are rusty from not being tested by the weak competition.
That is not likely, but far more possible than experiencing heat issues.

The sun issues can strike like lightning. There's no way of predicting when they will happen based on prior matches. All seemed fine at RG.

Even his B minus C plus game is good enough to take out everyone in the draw. When he finds himself in trouble, the serve which is almost John Isner/Kevin Anderson tier level, bails him out

Good enough to win the title again! The rest of the field need him to throw in a bad match close to round 1 to have a shot against him.

If sinner delivers his usual level or close to it he wins the title pretty easily from here.

All the old man Djokovic can do is hope he recovers and they make sinner earn the win. He has to pick his moments and hope sinner is off.

The first set on Friday is vital for Djoko or the match likely over in 3 sets!

As for the final again if sinner vs likes of Cobolli/zverev/fritz he’s a huge favourite. He has to play quite a bit below his best for them to stand a chance.

Sinner has done what was needed to done.
His form is excellent and he is talented enough to win remaining 2 matches.
If Novak wins friday match we can ask this question again

Right on the nose. I’d also note the backhand down the line seems more erratic than in the past.

But the serve is so lethal these days it almost doesn’t matter. Sinner’s got layers to his game.

If he can find his hold rate from 2025, coupled with the baseline game, while maintaining the same service ace rate on Friday, it shouldn’t be a match on Friday IMO

He will raise his level at the business end of slams. He'll defend his title. Will obliterate opposition in SF and Final

Djoker was noticeably limping after straining the calf.
Many feared that he would retire from the match.
But he kept on playing.
Exacerbated the injury for another three hours!!!
:(

A mild calf strain takes at least 7 days to heal.
At best, he can tape it up and make it somewhat functional, but functional does not cut it vs the #1 Sinner.

How the hell is Djoker's calf going to recover in 72 hours?

Sinner is playing well but just look at the muggery of Sinner's draw:
Shintaro and Struff. :(

Compare and contrast to Rinderknech and FAA.

Wonder if Sinner's lack of serious competition could work against him?
The same Mochizuki who beat Jodar and the same Struff who beat Hurkacz, Medvedev, and Nakashima. Do please try to stay in touch with the current events!

This is so interesting! Anecdotally if I think of patterns, I do think this happens to some. Speaking about Djoker, he looked the most tired I’ve ever seen him look. Even though I don’t like him much, I think he’s about the fiercest competitor that exists in tennis (prob the most!)…Somehow I think he knows it’s now or never and won’t miss. Don’t know what the heck he’s going to do about his potential injury. I think most people continue playing on adrenaline right after an injury but with a few hours/a day the real acuity sets in and it might not be something he can overcome. That said, he’s the one he will do it if at all possible.

lol for so many years of not liking the guy….I’ve watched so many matches where he simply rises from the dead! No one else really does it like he does. I do think his mental capacity is the top on tour and that is probably why he’s able to win despite almost any setback.

If Novak withdraws before SF then no question will asked. He can say calf injury.
If he decides to play then there is no excuses .

The 39 year-old Djoker, whose movement was already suspect has zero chance of carrying a calf strain vs Sinner.

But he will show up and hope that the young heat-sensitive Sinner succumbs to the elements.

Sinner will have to answer 1000 questions if he lose again to Novak.
In reality it should take 3 set only.
