If you win 5 W singles titles you'll get all the wildcards you want as well. And, yes, she still fills a lot more seats than most of the WTA Tour.

Leylah Annie Fernandez WC (current ranking 260)
Venus ranking is 56. Why did you single her out as the source of your distress instead of one of the other less highly ranked players that received a WC ?

A former champion/finalist that is coming back from injury and has gone even beyond the protected ranking status.
A former draw/ticket seller that is way past their prime but fans will still come out to see.
A local fan favorite that probably didn't get through qualies but again, a special wild card is given.
A player on the verge of retirement.
Lord knows how many wild cards Tommy Haas was getting on his retirement tour. I think he was given one at almost every tournament he asked for one.

Of all the dodgy wildcards that get given out, this is one of the least questionable. Despite her ranking Venus is still the sixth highest earner on the WTA, and her profile is huge. Having her at the tournament is unquestionably a massive draw, and is exactly what wildcards are designed for.
If you want to see dodgy look at Miami, who have a long-earned reputation for giving out soft wildcards to players represented by the tournament's owner (IMG). This year they gave Mari Osaka a wildcard, despite the fact that she's ranked 300-odd and regularly gets embarrassed in qualifying. Guess who represents her little sister?
In fact, wildcard nepotism could make a thread all of its own. Marko Djokovic is perhaps the most hilarious example. He got something like 40 wildcards in a four year period - many of them to lucrative tournaments like Dubai - despite never being ranked above ~800.

This is not a city league. This is the big leagues, where money come first, then entertainment, then tennis. Not surprising, nor wrong. It was the right decision on many levels.

Venus was the last direct acceptance. She didn't need the wild card, even though one was originally going to be given to her. She got in directly after Kvitova (and 3 others) withdrew.
At that time, Venus was ranked 44th and Riske was ranked 54th.

She was going to get a WC, but ended up not needing it after a few players withdrew. She was originally the 4th alternate, but Muguruza, Wang, Vondrousova, and Kvitova withdrew, which ended up bumping Venus into the main draw
This is similar to how Heather Watson and Iga Swiatek were going to get WCs for Wimbledon, but withdrawals granted them direct entry anyway

She didn't get a wildcard she got direct entry. And I just noticed her rank thats why. I am sure it happens all the time. Bouchard got a wildcard so did dopey Sharapova. Wildcards are different. Venus got direct entry. Not that I like them giving Bouchard or Pova wildcards either.

When you run a tournament you can explain to the investors why you don’t do wildcards.

Sometimes we also have players who would have qualified for the main draw playing qualies because they want more match practice, or because they signed up late (the deadline for qualies is later)
I get the wildcards. Not a huge fan but I get them. I was more asking about the direct entry question and I got a good answer thanks.When you run a tournament you can explain to the investors why you don’t do wildcards.

No, pretty sure she beat Ostapenko in the QF and Konta in the semi, to reach the final.
She definitely beat Konta in the semi, then lost to Muguruza in the final.
