Absolutely. They're not "my player" but the players who attend my child's academy. Unfortunately, it hurts everyone in the long run.... Especially those who get the scholarships and USTA has not really produced anyone, and it kills the small time clubs with good coaches...

It makes no sense that the USTA permits Patrick, the head of USTA Player development, many weeks off per year to announce tennis matches and play legends tournaments. In what organization can the chief executive making hundreds of thousands of dollars per year take weeks off to pursue his paid hobby. What qualifications does Patrick have to head player development. Who has he ever coached or developed?

players and their parents make their own decisions as to what's best for their long-term tennis career. to say they are stolen implies a) they were someone's exclusive "property" and b) they went against their will. why can't they come back? care to elaborate?

Have you ever heard of the Lemon law? Or Better Business practices?
What they do is find kids that have been developed at a high level by a private coach who knows what he is doing then promise them free trips to tourneys, offer up sub-standard coaching from their staff and tell you they are high level national coaches.
Now once your with them they sit back and watch to see if anything will happen and if it does they will take credit if not they kick you to the curb.
This is what I call bad business and because there is no contract, there can be no lawsuit other wise they would have been out of business long time ago .

I was told by 2 different coaches leaving the Carson High Performance that in the meetings they were told to "learn from your mistakes and you will make progress as you go" and they were not to worry because after 3 or 4 cycles of kids coming through there they would sooner or later have it down and make some decent players.

My player will continue to grow, growth plates have not fused yet (bad news) ,he is 6'5 ,should top out around 6'7 (hopefully), should be good for top 20 ATP within 5 years maybe less time , will depend on when he stops growing so we can be more aggressive with his tournament schedule otherwise you chance injuries and that I will not trust to any program. Also no one in the coaching staff has ever developed a top player ITF or ATP that I know of.

Did Annecone develop Fed? Coaches have worked with many ATP players. Just curious... have you? Seriously.

Do you really think your player would be in top 20 ATP in 5 yrs? I've never seen DB play.....just curious about an American prospect in the pipeline.

Fortunate for Harrison he has not had to deal with a lot of growth spurts by the time he was 16 he was 6'0, he's now coming up on 19 or 20 still 6'0 about 170lbs.
DB just turned 16 and is 6'5 his growth plates have not fused so he could put on another 2-3 inches and has not filled out he is 180lbs .
Both have possessed 130 mph + serves at this point DB has always held a high ranking in So.Cal and stayed somewhat competitive nationally ,Harrison with the help of IMG has had great hits daily and was able to travel more and play abroad.
Over this next year we are looking to compete more now that it is becoming more important and look to make headway will see what happens.
But top 20 ATP in 5 years is not a big order.

The USTA coaching staff not Annecone, Annecone has a solid resume if I recall right .
My resume is pretty nice for never playing .

FWIW, it seems to be that you have an excellent local academy...who knows, maybe they will be back...but not everyone's has the dough and so for a middle class parent I imagine the USTA's offer can be hard to refuse...

Hope he is more mature than Harrison, even though he's younger. That's more important than growing two more inches.

He is much more mature mentally at this stage , tennis experience maturity he is not far behind , example when he is real mad it's staight to the towel to wipe off and gain his composer ,DOES NOT THROW HIS RACKET , this is where they are much different .
I beleive this is what will keep Harrison out of the top 20 .

Harrison is no McEnroe but racquet throwing didn't prevent Johnny Mac, Connors or Nastase from reaching the Top 20. It's hard to say but Top 20 is a tall order for him, temper or not.

That was 20 years ago. The top players now, in addition to being physically tougher and better trained, are mentally tougher too. And as much as the racket throwing is juvenile and embarrassing(to himself and USTA) that's not not the main issue. The racket throwing is just a sign whats going on his head, which I imagine is not a pretty place to be sometimes..

Agreed. Top 20s still do it today. I'm not condoning it at all. Azaranka does it. Harrison can play but he needs to grow up. I wouldn't count him out just yet.

You get it ! I always tell my player if you are battling in your mind the urge to throw your racket then you are focusing to much on staying in control and this means you are not using your mind to problem solve .
I have pulled my player from 5 tournaments throughout his career of tennis and the last time was for "tapping" his racket on the ground 2 to 3 times , when we got to the car I calmly pulled out all his rackets and proceeded to brake them all, 6 in total, warned him the next time it was him that would be delt with , he has been rock solid since then.
We make up excuses for bad behavior rather then lay down the law and when they get close to the goal they have been working for the weeds of lack of self control keep us from reaching better ground .

Calmly or not, breaking his racquets is similar to the behavior that Harrison is being chastised for here.
I locked the racquets up for two weeks which excluded my kid from a huge tournament...a less violent approach which corrected the behavior immediately.

Lack of Height is Harrison obstacle

I am sure the agents who made that a wrap five years ago were speculating height over 6 feet. I distinctly remember part of the buzz being his easy power and prospect for more.

I saw Ryan and his brother Chrstian play many junior matches. Both were tremendously talented juniors. Christian was considered the best 14 year old in the world. And Ryan was the only 16 year old ever to clock a serve at a Grand Slam over 130 mph. Their careeers illustrate an important point- there is no sure thing when it comes to a top 20 pro career. I don't think everyone realizes the pace, consistency, and accuracy the top players hit with. It is light years beyond what any junior is doing. How can anyone know if a junior is going to be able to hit like that "in a few years". Not only hit like that but do it for hours on end day after day. There simply is no way to tell.

First off did the USTA hire any coaches from Switzerland ? We had a coach named Lansthorp get turned down by the USTA he has a pretty stellar record since the early 70's here in the US ! Let see Pete , Lindsey , Maria , Tracy, Myskina, Ect built a couple of them from the ground up.
So who does Mac hire? Higerus let's see got Courior when he was already top 10 and had a great work -ethic he gained from Nick (American), was coaching the best player of all time and had him lose the worst loss of any no.1 in a finals in history this guy named Fed.
So far Higerus has been with the USTA for about 5 or 6 yrs and has produced nothing with all the resorces he has . What they have done is look all around for the kids that have solid coaching play solid tennis then slip in and make all these promises and just hope things will happen .
The kids that are having steady results are Papas ,Rubin and Macky and they all have very tight nits with their families and coaches ,Papas live off site with his parents not in the dorms same with Rubin and Macky.

First of all, I know you're not a P-Mac fan and apparently there's some history there which is fine, however; it hasn't been 5 or 6 years for Jose. He is in his 4th year now.
Secondly, it's going to take 8-10 years to funnel kids through the pipeline but the successes are beginning to come in. Several gold ball winners, national tournament winners, 2 recent Las Petite As champions, a junior Australian Open winner, a junior US open winner, etc... I'm sure you'll give the credit to some other coach when it's convenient.
And finally, nothing personal but I highly doubt the USTA or an IMG is going to hire someone like Lansdorp. He worked with some of the people you mentioned about 30 years ago. There comes a time in life when it's time to move on.

Well said tball. I'm sure the kid worked hard to get where he is today. I saw Ryan play on the tour as a 16 year old in Cincy, and he was impressive.

Let's see your criteria Lansthorp 20 years ago Pete ,Lindsey, (Sharapova last 10 years) along with Myskina ,Krista Hardabeck a recent Jr.multiple National creds also ,,,OK now Higures 20 years ago takes a player on the rise at no.7 in the world and a few months later at no.1 , anyone could have taken that ride with Courier,
Ok so both are from 20 years ago and. Only one had results in recent years and it wasn't Higerus ,,,SO WHAT AND WHY DID THEY GO WITH HIM ?

I don't get this discussion. Many of the top players that play at the Usta still train with their private coaches. In the morning they work with their coaches off site 7-9, at the Usta by 10 and train all day. The advantage is that the Usta provides a tremendous opportunity to play practice matches against excellent players, and they do the fitness. They also take the kids to itfs around the world, with coaches, for free or almost free. It is an opportunity for nonwealthy players that is unbelievable. The Usta puts their name on these kids, but they still work with their own coaches.

It is not pointless when you say Lansthorp is behind the times and Higerus is from the same time frame and can't hold a candle to Lanthorp.
I understand why battered wives stay in bad relationships and why people drink the cool-aid they want to believe something good is gonna happen to what they are committed to.
It's obvious you want your player/child to go to college and that is ok its not a bad thing , where you are the history prove thats the end outcome .
This week in Boca there will be a college camp write down how many of those players have spent time with the coaches there, stayed in the dorms .
You will see that history repeats itself and you can see it firsthand.

What have I noticed is these Americans Sampras ,Agassi ,Conners, Courior ,Davenport ,Seles,Isner, Roddick, Fish,John McEnroe, Ashe,Chang, Todd Martin ,Serena ,Venus, Capratti, Everet, Krickstein, (Sharapove trained here since she was 7 rs old) Bryon Bros. Stan Smith,Peter Flemming , Jack Kramer Tim Mayotte ect.
This list is OK I guess we have LESS GS winners and top 10 players then what country???? HELLLO.
