How to create a Yonex Regna 98 for much cheaper and with better tolerance...

Well I really like my Yonex Regna and noticed I always gravitate towards frames that are quite similar...

While making a mod to another frame... well I got an almost exact replica of it...

I just added a Babolat leather grip to my Tecnifibre TF40 16x19...

From 305 gr unstrung to 310 (Regna OK)

Strung balance of 32 cm from 33 (Regna OK)

Leather grip (Regna OK)

SW of 321-322 (Regna OK)

RA of 64 (Regna 65)

Twistweight of 14 (Regna OK)

According to the TWU database even the Vibration of the two are very similar (143 vs 141)

They are indeed very similar with this mod, except a better feel (I guess dur to the foam inside) for the TF40 especially on off center shots...

Power level is also pretty similar as well as the string pattern and spacing.

Ok Ok I see all those who will say thay dont like the Tec grip shape... that's indeed personal but I'm very comfortable with it, no problem

Youve matched the published specs. There are other specs that arent listed that Beckett @dr. godmode mentions in his latest video like recoil weight and flex distribution that you arent going to match. Not to mention the beams are different and the feel is different We havent even talked about materials. Ive owned TF40s and currently own Regnas. They swing and feel totally different.

If you really want to replicate it Id start with a current EZ98. Youll get a lot closer that way but the materials are still different. Not to mention the VDM.

You did a great job matching the numbers, but you missed quite a few things.

First off, why ? The Regna is only about $100 or so more than a new Yonex, that isn't a significant amount of money to those of us so far into tennis that we post on racket message boards.
o f
Secondly, you can't recreate the characteristics of the Regna by sprinkling weight here or there. Since, the graphite layup is different in 3 places on the racket instead of the traditional uniform layup throughout other retail rackets.

Third...
Here Tennis Spin talks about why it's hard to create an Ezone Tour 98 just adding things to an Ezone, it's because the Ezone Tour has the tapered throat design of the Regna, giving it the similar effect. Of course you could sand down another racket and try to recreate this, but then you are really working too hard to save $100 and good luck with being successful.

Here is another video that ties in somewhat to the discussion...

Now what you created gets closer to the Regna just by having similar numbers, even maybe closer than a Ezone 98 perhaps, although it still won't have the Yonex head shape. I'd also be curious if it had the same sweet spot pattern using TW university, did you look at that?

Anyway, "much cheaper"? The base savings is say $120, but do you spend any time and money making the pseud0 Regna? How much is your time worth?

I'll even give you the benefit of the doubt and say the racket you created is 85% there to being a Regna, but then why deprive yourself of a real Regna for such insignificant savings?

You will still be missing the unique stability for the SW and the strange ability of a Regna to stiffen on hard flat shots for power and yet be great at touch shots etc. It's really hard to describe, but it's real and not marketing . Heck, Yonex doesn't even market the Regna.

Finally, so you don't think I am a fanatic, I can beat people with a Regna, Ezone, Vcore 95, no racket wins matches, but the Regna is one of a kind for sure.

cant speak to anything else tech wise , but just to note $120 if you need 2-3 rackets adds up quick. if you need 2 Regnas minimum for match play thats $760...and 3 is $1140?

3 Tecnibfires new for $780. thats not insignificant either... but hell of a saving from 1140

Come on that's primarily marketing BS... graphite graphite and graphite... rest is pretty stories....

The foam inside the TF40 is making a bigger difference...

I've never said they're totally the same, just freaking close and even if I own both I could totally satisfy myself with the TF 40 for less than half the price!
Have you hit with a Regna? How can you say it's marketing BS then?

There are more to frames than just SW, static weight and balance. I mean most of the current Head frames are the same as the previous gen but they just added Auxetic. They made 1 minor material change and everyone agrees that most of the new frames play different. You're trying to take an entirely different racquet and make it the same as another. It's not happening.

Work harder? Study harder? Earn more money.

Even when I was barely making enough to pay my 1st mortgage (I'm still not sure how I got approved for a $300K loan when I was making $60K) I would work weekends reffing at the paintball field when I needed extra money. That extra $100 a day would add up. Or I'd rent out a room or even the entire basement for extra money. That last one only works if you're single though.

Quoting system messed up, please ignore the double quote.
Considering most here seem to have 10 rackets laying around, it would seem insignificant to sell a few and buy new Regnas. But, again, you aren't making new Regnas at all, just a shadow of them. Plus, don't people make enough money per hour so that this endeavor is not a good use of time? Or if they are retired, wealthy enough to just buy Regnas. I mean if you are serious about tennis, saving $300 is nothing really. Arguing though about the savings is kind of irrelevant because even if you save the money you still don't get the Regna performance.

That satisfaction philosophy also works on Vegas hookers btw

Just cause you can afford it doesn’t make it a worthwhile purchase to everyone. How much benefit are you getting from that extra $120? Sure the feel might be different and unique but if let’s say OP has both setups and is like idk I don’t really care for the Regna feel that much for the extra $120 this TF40 fits all my needs just fine at fraction of the cost why do they need to work or earn more to purchase something that barely feels better to their personal opinion?

We see this all the time in the bike industry. Why didn’t you spend the extra $500 to get nicer looking brakes? Do they brake better? Arguably. Do they look a lot cooler? 100%. Are they worth $700 for the set vs the $200 set? Maybe if you really like the looks and feel but for most not at all.

TL;DR no reason at all to spend the extra money if you don’t care enough to lol

I fully agree with your last sentence but even the title of this thread seems like he does care to. Some of the best frames I've bought, I bought new for $100-$120 each - my ultra tours and my C10 pros. The C10 pro is the only other frame I'm currently using besides the Regna. They are at totally opposite ends of the price spectrum. So you can definitely find great frames at a lower price. So I can now make the argument why pay $260 for a TF40 when you can get a C10 pro for $120? My point is that you can't make a frame replicate another one just by matching weight, balance, etc. I'm not saying the Regna is better than X frame. I'm just saying you can't replicate it by DIY.

The Regna fanbois be like..

@Casper777 - you just forgot to add the 3 drops of unicorn tears and 07g of powdered tiger placenta

This thread just exposes the fact that sometimes a random racquet just works just as well and sometimes even "feels just as good or better" as another that is "better"

Tiger placenta is getting so expensive these days! Wallaby foreskin should have a similar effect.

This thread exposes.... which part of this thread proves that? I'd rather have a discussion about the Regna than generalize .

That being said, an Ezone 98 is 90% there, a Ezone 98 Tour 22 is 95% there but heavier and not the same head balance (for some reason the peoples at Yonex decided to make the throat design the same as the Regna, but not do it to the regular Ezone) and the VC95 is also about 90% of a Regna, just the feel is different.

Excuse my ignorance - what about the throat design is the same as the Regna but not the regular Ezone?

Watch the Tennis SPin video in my post above. Mildly interesting if you are curious about the Regna
They're comparing the 2020 Ezone to the 2022 Ezone Tour in that section of the clip though... I have both the 2022 EZ and the 2022 EZT and I can't see any visual distinction, so I'm curious if there's some difference in layup or composition I don't know about.

Oops, maybe I tagged the wrong section. The difference is in the throat right above the handle, it tapers, that, based on their guesses, is part of the trampoline effect when hitting hard shots with the Tour and regna. I think in that video or maybe a minute after my placegolder they mention the regna, while also comparing it to the ezone 98, remarking the ezone doesn't have that tapering. Also the other vcorr95 video in that post discusses it.

I saw the TS video and not sure how accurate it is as I haven't paid much attention to the EZs. But the Yonex interview vid I posted above shows where they use the different materials in the Regna that they don't even use in their other frames. A lot of that has to be laid by hand at the right time which is why it's more labor intensive and they make less of them.

When you are passionate about something, whether it's tennis, bikes, model trains, watches, you become irrational. It doesn't matter what the cost is (within your purchasing ability), you'll pay for it. Compromises don't quite cut it.
Well said, and for perspective a "great" bike can be $20,000 , this racket is merely $100 or so more than others, it's one of the cheapest exclusive rackets there is, not even a pro stock price.

While an indoor court in the northeast can be $50 an hour, a lesson can be $100 for one hour, a tennis club membership can be $100 a month or $120,000 for a membership at a nicer club.

Yes, that's important as well, including having 3 different kinds of braiding in the stick whereas every other yonex is one style throughout.

The Ezone 98 has that tapering, too. That section of the throat looks identical to me between the 2022 EZ and EZT. No argument that the Regna has it, I know it does. But I don't think there is a discernible difference in the mold between the EZ98 and the EZT.

The OP thinks his TF40 is "similar" to a Regna... Not a generalization, for him specifically it works in the way he explains it.

That is all that matters.

OP still hasn't posted if he's ever hit with a Regna.

"I replicated how sex feels by cutting a hole in a watermelon."
"Have you ever had sex?"
"No, but I replicated it"

I actually own 5 if you really care... 2x98 1x98 2022 and 2x100

Didn't think this fun post would be so serious...

Really reminds me of Apple fan boys when you dare saying an android phone is as good as an iPhone LOL

By the way have you already had sex??

I would have never noticed myself, but after watching the video I checked my ezone, ezone tour, and regnas, and the tour has it, regular doesn't seem to have it, but wouldn't be the first time I was wrong about something just by looking at it.

Would you get better results modifying a Yonex or is it harder?

So you're admitting to trolling? Or just having a bad sense of humor?

Also, lets see pics of all 5. Everyone claims to have sex when they are called out as being a virgin.

I think that the Pure Strike 98 is the best Regna out there.
