how to make the volley skid more stay lower

I'm trying to get my volleys to skid more and stay lower, mostly I'm trying to do this to limit the effectiveness of my friends topspin lob. Not only in lob depth control but also the less it sits up, his ability to hold till the last second and disguise the lob is neutralized.

Obviously hit more underspin outside inside swing path but I'm wondering if there is some nuance I'm missing.

More sidespin, out in, and service line depth. Step into the volley while sideways.
Only on waist and higher volleys.
Lower volleys, go for depth and placement.

The reason your volley doesn't skid and stays lower is most likely because you're "cupping" your volley imparting more underspin than the forward flat motion.

Most volleys will have some sort of slice (underspin), but there are different types of slices. If you use the cupping motion, your slice is more close to the drop shot slice where it slows down the ball and the ball tends to float. Then there's the slice that skids because the slice is say 10-20% of the stroke and the rest is really just a drive forward - the result is low, skidding volleys.

The more straight line and simple path your volley is, the more likely you'll be able to hit these skidding volleys.

Yes. Like with the slice the key to skidding is hitting it harder and with less spin. Not completely without spin of course but focus on hitting it firm and low not creating max spin.

Not JUST underspin, but a combination with sidespin added causes hard to predict bounces.
Underspin itself has been dealt with playing any old 3.0 fart.
