How to return high forehands with Semi-Western grip?

It seems that no matter what I do, I always balls that bounce high to the forehand side because they bounce so high. I'm not sure if I should change my grip just for that shot, or take a shorter backswing, or what! Any ideas? I currently use a semi-western grip that works just fine for regular forehands, but those high balls are frustrating!

The most effective way for me is to topspin the balls back. Easy low to high motion since it's obviously not hard to get under high bouncing balls. It doesn't have to be a moonball, but you can send those heavy topspin balls right back.

edit:: You can also take those balls BEFORE the bounce, if you can. A swinging volley is common in today's game, just be sure to add topspin on it. That way you can take the ball at the height you want. Many other people will tell you to take it on the rise, which is a good idea, but hard to do.

Sometimes if you take high balls with a sidespin, they produce real fast reply to high balls, but dealing with high balls consistently is a pain. You could try stepping in and half volley with an angle for a changeup.

make sure you are using your legs. Its kinda tricky to do at first because you'll be going lower than the ball.
I like to use massive topspin w/ a little sidespin on these balls. My swing kinda goes up and then comes back down to my hip (i hit my knee on my follow through once). Kinda western like swing, although i use semiwestern.

oh yeah...hit it early. if its high sometimes it looks like we are hitting it in front but are actually not.

wfudeac,

At what height do you try to contact these 'high ball to your FH' ?

For semi-western grip, your ideal contact is between chest to shoulder. For any ball above shoulder height, you would have trouble using your 'regular FH stroke' to hit it.

The reason is because although you can get below these high ball, it is alomost impossible to swing from low to high ('above the contact point') without altering your stroke.

There are a number of options:

1. Try to contact the ball between chest to shoulder high. You can do this by either moving in (take the ball on the rise) or backing out (let the ball drop)

2. Adopt a modified/different stroke for these high balls.
a) a modified follow thru on the same side (something like a topspin lob where your racquet end up on the hitting side shoulder)
b) a flat drive from
c) a block with slice

A nice closed face and ripping shot will do it. I don't even think about going low to high on a high forehand, I just swing straight through with a closed face and watch it ricochet off the court for a winner.
