how to use non-dominant hand to measure the incoming ball?

I think it's very challenging to judge the correct space between body and incoming ball. I often see the suggestion of using the non-dominant arm to measure it, but never get the hand of it. for forehands I just can't feel the difference between using my left arm(I am a righty)as the reference and just using my body as the reference.

is there any tips or drills? I know one drill that is to extend the left arm to the side fence and catch the incoming ball. but the issue is where my left hand catches the ball is not the correct point(too close to the body!!).

please help.
