How was roddick able to serve as fast as he did when he was only 6 foot 2 and not even very lanky?

I remember watching him serving against fed at the 2007 us open and he was chucking 140s consistently and holding serve like an absolute gangster. How could roddick serve like isner when his ball strike height was like 3 feet lower than isners?

  • Stiff and powerful extended length racquet with a high swingweight.
  • Deep Knee Bend
  • Ultra Flexible Shoulder
  • Excellent Body Rotation

Exactly. An elongated Pure Drive with lots of added weight in the head will hit a ball that can drive nails into a 2x4. HIs technique looked a little awkward but the essentials were there.

He is a GOAT server. That’s why.

I'm not sure his shoulder was that flexible or if it was just the logical result of his extremely explosive motion. If he were super flexible he'd just store less energy in the shoulder joint while having more movement in it.

yes there was a documentary about his serve in german, around 2003 or 2004, and it was mentioned that his shoulder was very flexible, much much more than an average person.

Can't find the youtube vid but there was a great one explaining the motion of Roddick, the ones top broadcast are not as good in my opinion. Basically it came down to his knee bend, quick rotation and timing. Like the first response noted these aspects save for the shoulder stuff.

I certainly improved the speed of my serve when I started working on my hip rotation.
